The amount of ridiculous statements in this thread in thread in the past hour is amazing. Stop trying to generalize everyone. Equal say was the best way to do it. I was never an 8th grader sent to the principal. I knew nothing about UND prior to my junior year of high school yet I check the Grand Forks Herald daily now and I live in Michigan and graduated in 2008.

Doesn't matter what nickname I suggest as that stage has long since past and numerous better nicknames were discarded. But if you want to be a generic bird mascot might as well be something like the Artic Raptors than the Fighting Hawks.

People are mad with the process because a) it continuously changes and b) none of the original supposed nickname requirements have been met. Say Fighting Hawks wins, there is nothing unique or inspiring about it. There are zillions of other schools using bird mascots and well as like 30 using Hawks. Say Roughriders wins, yes it is unique in college but our town has a high school with the same name. There is also debate about if it evokes any local pride and is true North Dakota. This process has been jacked up from the beginning, produced nicknames of poor quality for us to select from, and don't little to unite the fan base. The way I see it, it is pretty much an all around failure no matter which name we end up with.

Fighting Hawks is terrible. It is beyond generic and boring. We could have skipped this entire process if we end up with Hawks as that is what nearly every other team forced to change selected. Might as well be the sheep the way we follow everyone else around.

The question is now where do the former Nodak voters turn to? Fighting Hawks, Roughriders, or no vote?

Except if no one goes to the games, who do you think is going to complain? I was a student 2004-2008 and went to every game... But they were good those years. I love pro football but college is blah to me. Players come, players go. If the team sucks I would be hard pressed to sit there and watch. Put a good product on the field and the fans will come back. Lose to bad teams and barely win games you should easily win isn't helping.

What a crappy thing to do. Shows how much loyalty the kid has. I would be nervous if I was his future team because the only person he cares about is himself.
