This is another perfect example; it appears from his interviews that Bubba gets it. He says the right things, it does seem like he's self-aware of his teams shortcomings. Not optimistic that anything will actually change, but worth noting.

    Wait and see.

It's good that Bubba is taking a hard look at talent - agree with the wait and see though.  However, will he take the same hard look at coaching?  Game preparation, ability to motivate (the drop after the Bison game is stunning), game management, clock management, offensive play calling and philosophy, defensive scheme, 3rd down play, the chart he uses for 2 point conversions, I could go on.  Because unless these are evaluated we will get more of the same.  His 10 year history shows change is glacial.

  2. A little bit chicken/egg argument as to if it's coaching or talent - a bit of both with the understanding that coaches recruit talent.  But we sure aren't getting the best out of the talent we have.  After the SU game I thought wow - Bubba finally turned the corner.  Wrong.  The regression from that game was stunning. What kind of staff can't build off of that victory?  Looking back the Dancing Bubba video almost seems like a cruel joke.

Danny turned down a free meal … again.

It’s OK to run the ball, especially if you’re doing it at 6 yards a play.

Don't know what's gotten into Danny lately - when he started he showed so much promise

I wasn’t sure where to put this, so I started a new topic. I am watching the Minn/Mich State game which is being played at Mariucci and couldn’t help but notice the shadows of the players and locations where the light hits the ice. I pulled up the highlights from last nights UND game at the Ralph and see very little of the shadowing. It seems that the lighting is distributed better at the Ralph.  One of those things you don’t notice is very good until you see it not so good somewhere else.

Interesting about lighting - for the first couple of hockey games this year I was almost blinded by the spotlights on the bottom of the scoreboard - not sure that they are a new addition but the sequencing was new - when they flashed into the crowd they hit me right in the eyes - after cataract surgery they sure had a bad effect.  Last couple of games were much better.

Chaves didn’t hire Bubba so how would anyone know if he wouldn’t hire a good replacement?

He didn't hire him but he did give him an extension before his contract was due after a 5-6 season.  That's probably a good indication.

Name one coach that he’s hired that has gone to do good things

I know a buy out is a problem but is there any indication that Chaves "gets it" at all concerning the FB program?  He clearly didn't in 2021.  Our game planning and in-game adjustments are the worst I have ever seen.   What will it take for the light to go on in his head?  We can complain or alternately support the program with more money all we want but until the AD sees winning as a priority welcome to our future - rinse, repeat.

The offense has been stale, and predictable all season long. My 16-year-old can predict the plays. I am not impressed with the Offensive Coordinator. There needs to be wholesale changes in the offseason.

This is UND where nothing changes but the weather

Teams under Bubba seem to do that pretty much every season that starts out looking good. They then will go on the road and play average/good teams and lay an egg (or eggs, as they did this season) then return home with all momentum lost/soured fans. They gotta figure out that road issue.

It's been 10 years - the learning curve must be pretty steep

  9. My prediction - our offensive play calling and defense will straighten out today and we will play a great game.  Good mix of calls to keep the opponent guessing.  But true to form these changes won't last and very soon - probably early in the playoffs - we will revert to the game management that drives us all nuts.

I understand your point. But that ship has sailed and we need to go from here. I don’t know what the future holds but my guess is if we win Sat and make the playoffs we won’t buyout the contract. If we lose Sat all bets are off and your guess is as good as mine.

Agreed that that ship has sailed.  But continuing with the seafaring analogy we have the exact same Admiral making the decision about the same Captain as in 2001.  I'm not sure that either has learned anything in the interim.

You are correct. Every organization must do a self reflection on a regular basis regarding what went well and why, and then how to improve on the strengths of the organization moving forward. They must also review where goals weren’t met, where the organization failed and why.
The administration, the coaches and especially the players must do an honest self reflection.  Players need to hold themselves accountable and along with the coaching staff outline a plan to improve in every facet of their game on the field, off the field, on the practice field, the film room and in the classroom.
The coaching staff as a team and individually need to do the same.
Admin also must self reflect. Do these coaches and players have the necessary resources to be Champions?  If not admin needs to move the program forward. They have to continue to improve what we do well and strengthen our weaknesses.
Every year they must evaluate and decide if we not only have the necessary resources but do we have the right people in place to manage those resources to move the program to the conference and national championship level we all want for UND. That will require the tough decisions regarding personnel. If and when changes are made that change must be managed to minimize disruption to the University, to staff, to players, to the program and to us as fans. It’s complicated and difficult.

I believe we have the talent to have won the USD game and it’s a game we should have won. There are no excuses for UNI and USD and I know they are good teams. If we play mistake free, we can compete with SDSU ( on any given day).
It’s frustrating when we are so close, but are inconsistent.  If we can win Saturday, and are fortunate enough to make the playoffs, we are good enough to be competitive against even the best.  At this point in the season nothing matters except Saturday’s game. The rest (including my opinion) is just noise from the outside looking in.  We can sort out blame and accountability after the season.

You are 100% correct that this is the process every team (and organization) needs to do.  The main issue with us is that we have the same group doing the review that did it in 2021 (after a 5-6 season and the Bison game debacle) and concluded that even though Bubba's contract wasn't up that the best thing to do was give him an extension.

I also wonder how involved he is with teaching defensive play of the forwards, who are an important part of the defense.

That, and I wonder about world peace.

On an individual level, depends on your donation level. I would think Chaves absolutely would care about the sentiment of the fan base. IMO, things feel different this year, than it has previously. I think the tide has turned on Bubba.*

*I said this yesterday, it'll take something (playoff win or two), to change that.

He didn't care that much about the fan base when he renewed a 5-6 Bubba before his contract was up and after he called perhaps the worst game I have seen in many many years against NDSU.  Now it doesn't matter what the fan base sentiment is because we are stuck with Bubba and can't afford a buy out.

That is true, but we do generally play well at home. And with a playoff bid on the line and if being senior day, I expect the guys will be ready to play and we'll have a good game. I expect a win.

Good points - although there have been several times - mostly since the Bison game - that I have expected the guys to be ready to play.

    That said, RIP Lowell.

Agreed - I'm certainly not a mover and shaker in Sioux athletics, but I was personally lobbied by the gobc several times.  That group is strangely silent now after 10 years.  That certainly moved the needle for us to hire a 22-21 coach instead of an up and comer.  However Chave's decision to extend Bubba after a 5-6 season is the main reason we are mired in mediocrity now.
