There are plans drawn up to tear down the old REA and construct a new building large enough for the football, baseball, soccer teams to practice indoors (a necessity in ND climate) plus it could hold indoor track meets. The Hyslop is not large enough for teams to really practice in plus its track is an embarrassment.

My thoughts on UND formally looking at a move to DI: -- It is about time! Although I personally feel staying DII is the best for us at this time, it is important that we finally take a serious look at all ramifications of the move: costs (scholarships, recruiting, travel), conferences, alumni support ($), etc. We have been making comments for years - mostly negative against moving - but have done so without formally evaluating all the pros and cons. -- I do not believe that we will make a decision by the end of the school year UNLESS the study reveals a very strong case for going one direction or the other. I believe that, if the study indicates the move to DI is appropriate, it will have an action plan in place "when the time is right". That may mean when DII cuts FB scholarhsips again or when a conference affiliation is available. It coulld be two years from now or five years downt he line. -- I do not believe we have any guarantees from the BSC or anyone else. I do believe that we think there is a reasonable chance that the Big Sky will expand in the next few years. -- I know that part of the study will include discussions with UNO, USD and maybe SCSU, MSU and UMD. I would also hope that we would not be too proud to talk to NDSU and SDSU. Getting the major players of the old NCC together to strategize can only be a benefit - to NDSU and SDSU as well as UND. On a side note, I think both UND and NDSU acted very childishly the last couple of years regarding SU's move to DI. I wouldn't blame SU for not being overly open to discussions but it would be in everyone's best interest. -- I am quite sure that we will also spend quite a bit of time with Maine, New Hampshire and other schools of similar size - who happen to also play DI hockey. We have an awful lot in common with those universities. -- I hope that there is an announcement soon regarding a new practice/track facility at UND. This would put us in the position to 1) continue to be a dominant force in DII athletics with a major improvement in Track or 2) position us to be in great shape facility-wise for a move to DI. -- I know that, if we make the move, it will be very frustrating for us UND fans for a few years. While we may have some facility advantages over our friends 70 miles south, they will be far ahead of us in the transition. In other words, they will likely kick our butts in most sports for a few years. That will be difficult for us to swallow! Again, I personally feel we would be better off staying in DII. I think we could compete well in FB in IAA quite soon but I think we would disappointed in our ability to compete in all other sports. The costs and inability to recruit talented kids to the plains of ND would be a huge challenge!

I live in Jacksonville, FL. One of the top high school quarterbacks in the country (if not the best) from here in Jax has just ruled out the school that he would have likely chosen because of a situation similar to this. So, yes, you can lose a recruit because of poor fan behavior or a coach who doesn't behave well in the mind of a recruit and/or his parents.

That is my point - I hope that is "the rest of the story". Obviously, the statement in itself is old news - the Athletic Department has been talking about a practice facility on that site for a long time.
-
I wonder if this means that the REA area is being set aside for a practice/track facility. I hope that is the case and there will be an announcement soon!

Interesting topic! Add Jacksonville, FL to the list!

I see on the Badger website that WS scored with about 5 minutes left to win 3-2. A good showing for our ladies. Goalie must have played well. We were outshot something like 46-23.

Any updates?

There is a good article in the Forum today regarding UND Women's BB team. Roebuck says it will likely be the deepest team he has ever had. He also made it sound like he didn't plan to redshirt any of the players we thought he might redshirt. I don't know how to provide the link - worth your time to go find it.

I am aware of this but curious how the injuries are healing up! A Williston newspaper indicated that Hoffelt had surgery on a knee or shoulder and that is why he wasn't with the Sioux this year. Obviously, a personal situation may also be involved. I understand there is a decent chance that Groeschl will play this Saturday.

Friday night 7:30 Saturday If we lose Friday - 2:30 If we win Friday - 7:30 Sunday If we lose both games - 10:30 AM Win, then lose - 3:30 All times are Central.

Anyone have info on the following players and how they are progressing with their injuries? Hoffelt Braegelmann Strouth Wahlin - is he practicing yet? Trenbeath - is he practicing with the team? Thomas - I understand if we shouldn't talk about his situation yet. Plus, anyone else who has had major injuries? Have all the redshirt freshmen stayed healthy? And, how about those redshirts - who has been most impressive?

Disney Classic Matchups Augusta State Nebraska-Omaha Bentley Regis Columbus State Southern Indiana Merrimack UND A lot of historically good teams - not sure how talented they are supposed to be this year.

Glad we got Benter - we need to get the talented ND kids (there aren't many of them!). It was between us and Northern. Northern was attractive as quite a few western ND BB players have had some success down there. Hopefully, we will get similar decisions from a couple of other recruits in the next few weeks!

I apologize - that sounded like a question from a stalker. I was just curious how far you have to travel to follow UND sports. I applaud you for your interest and support of UND athletics, particularly women's hockey. Also, thanks for your summaries of the games.
-
I agree with your assessment. We may have the necessary depth that they both could be red-shirted.
-
Do you mention Beck for development reasons (another year to mature, etc.)? Ledger might be a decent candidate for redshirting as well.
-
That is good news I hope. Gutter turned an ankle earlier this week. Nothing overly serious but will slow him up for awhile. That really hurts his development and the team as we are so thin up front.
-
Has anyone watched the women practice yet? I am curious how the new recruits look and if Danye Guinn appears to be healthy. I hope to see them at the Disney tourney in a couple of weeks - I will give everyone my thoughts then.

While I feel as strongly about retaining the Fighting Sioux names as anyone else, I have to disagree with you. If we lose all battles trying to retain the name, we do need to change it and get on with life. It would be very unfair to our young athletes and our coaches (and fans, for that matter) for them to have to play any post season games on the road. Just because we are upset about this, doesn't mean our teams should be put at a disadvantage. That being said, I am sure that Fighting Sioux logo'd clothing would be worn at UND athletic events for many, many years to come!

I understand we may learn about 2-3 kids who have been offered scholarships in the next few days. We are in the running for two that we really want but who knows......
