  1. I will start by saying that I have not done an immense amount of research on this, however I did a quick search on the University of North Dakota website for "Native American Tuition" and came up with many, many results that talked about full or partial tuition waivers for Native Amercan students for the school of medicine, school of law, etc. Now, you may be right that not 100% of the Native Americans that attend UND get 100% of their tuition paid for. I don't want to put words in people's mouths, but what I think he was referring to is that he did not get full or partial tuition waivers for being a "white student" at UND. So, your inbox may not be full of examples that people on this site have emailed you, but you cannot argue that Native Americans do get partial or full tuition waivers for being Native American. If you did not take advantage of that, then that is your prerogative. That being said, I think others (and I'll add myself to the list) have said that they respect your views and that you can come on here and say that you are against the nickname. However, you do realize that the MAJORITY does not oppose the nickname? And when I say majority, I'm not referring to the majority of non-Native Americans that are involved with this issue, but I am also including Native Americans. We all have our stories/reasons for why we are in favor or oppose the name. I can tell you this, and you can take it for what it's worth...I grew up with season tickets watching the Sioux hockey team from the age of 3. I have ALWAYS looked at UND and the Sioux name as being honorable and something to be proud of. I have NEVER once seen anything that would lead me to believe otherwise. Would a university name itself after something they thought was derogatory or "not-honorable"? UND is the "Fighting Sioux" because it shows strength and in my opinion, to honor the Sioux name/tribe/culture, etc. Now, you can write off my thoughts/views as "someone who is not Native American and doesn't really 'know' the issues", but I feel that I'm the exact person who shows that the Sioux name is not derogatory or a bad thing. I am not Native American, and I grew up watching the Sioux and being taught that to be a "Fighting Sioux" is an honor and a priveledge - and I teach the same to my nephews and will eventually my kids. I would have given my left *** to play hockey for the Sioux, and to wear that jersey, and call myself a "Fighting Sioux". Sorry if this got long, but those are my 2 cents.
  2. Found it...it appears that he won an Emmy Award in 2004 from the National Television Academy - Upper Midwest Chapter. Gopher Hockey Fox Sports Net North won an Emmy in the "Sports - Live or Unedited" category, and Mazzocco won in the "Commentator" category. There are a lot of award categories, but you can view them here. There must not have been much competition if Frank won it.
  3. I completely agree. At least when Woog is with Mazzocco I can stomach watching the games. Woog seems to have a sense of humor and definitely knows the intricacies of the game. Mazzocco...who knows where his head is at...he's terrible. I think it was last year (maybe 2 years ago now) that Mazzocco won some type of broadcasting award. I'm not sure if the award was for FSN or just for Mazzocco (I think just Mazzocco), and I'm not sure exactly what award or who it was from. Maybe with some research I can find out, unless someone else knows. However, I have no idea who would give him an award or why they'd give him an award...he is just plain dreadful to listen to.
  4. I hope this wasn't brought up and talked about in another forum...if so, I apologize for starting a new one. Terry Frei, a writer from Denver (I think) who also is a contributor to the NHL page on ESPN.com has written an article on his top 10 hockey experiences in North America, which can be found here. As I was reading, I scrolled down slowly and read each one 1 by 1, as to not spoil the surprise of what would be next. I was hoping, but really didn't think that The Ralph would be on the list, but sure enough...it was! A quote that I liked: "It would be wise not to say anything nice about the NCAA, and certainly not about the organization's PC-driven crackdown on nicknames."
  5. I couldn't have said it better myself!
  6. I can safely say that this is one of the dumbest things that I have heard of. I have coached youth hockey for the past 5 years and would NEVER wear a helmet while coaching. We do have a coach in our organization that does wear a helmet - more power to him...that's his choice.
  7. For those of us stuck at work......Comcast had webcasts of all of the East teams regional games, and I was wondering if anyone knows if today's game will be webcast since BC is playing. I suppose since it's on ESPN2, they won't be able to, is that right??? The site that had the regional webcasts is here, and I don't see anything about today's game: Comcast/CN8TV
  8. Phil's a big boy now, and I think it's safe to say that he controls his own actions. If he hasn't learned that by now, hopefully they're trying to teach him that in Minneapolis. Yes, USA hockey may have wanted it, but Phil could have easily said "You know what, I'm just not comfortable with this and don't want it to be a big production".
  9. Kessel will not get my congratulations for this award (I'm sure that hurts his feelings!). In my opinion, the powers that be had already decided he would get this award when he held his press conference and announced that he'd be going to Minnesota. Unfortunately, those same powers that be overlooked a more deserving hockey player - TJ Oshie.
  10. Is there any way we could exchange the Lucia-pet for Pearl from Holy Cross? How does a coach who's team threw it in the tank in the WCHA Final 5 and the West Region get on this list? Granted, it's the team who has to go out and win the games, but the coach has a large part in getting them up and ready for the playoffs?!?!?!
  11. One of my favorite quotes was heard when listening to the Minn/HC game on Holy Cross's audio link, and has now become a part of my signature. Not only was it what he said, but how he said it. The announcers themselves were stunned, you could hear the crowd in the background and everyone was going nuts, and the announcer yelped out: "The Minnesota Golden Gophers are probably wondering what just hit them." - Dick Lutsk, Holy Cross Crusader hockey play-by-play announcer.
  12. This can't be happening now...does anyone have it back, or is it still out? Mine's still out.
  13. Lost mine, too! You can't do this to us now...after we've watched 4+ periods...
  14. 0 - 0 after 1 OT...we're heading to 2 OT's!
  15. Thanks for the clarification. I read the post by specifics and was confused.
  16. Announcers were just talking about who they think may get the goal for either team and 1 announcer mentioned Jeff Likens for Wisconsin. If anything, Likens will be out there if Wisconsin gets scored on. I watched him 2 years ago at the WJC at the Ralph and he was horrible. Haven't had the chance to really watch him since.
  17. 0 - 0 with 14:00 left in the 1st OT.
  18. The most talented team in the nation?
  19. I'm sure glad they play this Hobey Baker piece between EVERY period...just in case I missed it over the last 21 periods of hockey I've watched in the last few days.
  20. ...and we're headed to overtime!
  21. GREAT chances for Wisconsin on this PP, but can't finish! WOW!
  22. Uh oh...penalty on Cornell with 3:00 to play.
  23. This one's heating up, and the ref's letting them play!
