  1. Don't forget, we used to get regional games on cable in past years. I used to sit in the Memorial Union and at home on regional weekend and watch game after game (this was during the late 1990's). And I think you could make the argument that College Hockey has more exposure and media attention now than it did back then. This isn't about market size, it's about media consolidation and lack of competition. If it were all about market size, stuff like spelling bees and lawnmower racing wouldn't be on any channel except community access.

And it isn't just College Hockey, the NFL is pulling the same crap with NFL Network (which only about 40% of people have access to). Mark my words, this is going to get worse and worse. In all sports. :D:D

It isn't about media consolidation. It is about buying up product and companies trying to use that product to build up new networks. ESPN has purchased the rights to almost all of the NCAA tournaments. They have the right to do with those games what they want. They want to build ESPNU into a major cable network that is available on all cable systems. But they want those systems to pay them for using the network. Cable providers are tired of adding new channels and having to pay for them. ESPN is using college hockey and other events to try to force cable providers into putting ESPNU on their systems.

The NFL is doing the same thing with their product. They own the rights to the games and want to make a lot of money by using those games. If they own the network they can make more money than if they sell the rights to another network. Eventually I could see them putting all NFL games on their own network. They want to force the cable providers to pay them for putting the network on their system. But they want the NFL Network on basic cable like ESPN, not on extended packages or as part of sports packages. The cable providers don't want to have to pay for that channel because their customers are tired of the increasing cost of cable TV.

The Big Ten Network is just the latest to play this game. That is why people in the Twin Cities were not able to see most UMTC sporting events this year other than hockey. This whole game is about money. All of these companies want more of your money for the same product that you have been getting for years. I am not sure how to stop it, but I do know that as long as they keep making progress they will keep trying. The only example of this that I remember failing is Victory Sports and the Twins. They wanted to do the same thing. But they caved very quickly. ESPN and the NFL have very deep pockets and they will play these games for a long time if they think that they have a chance to win and establish the networks.

  2. Are the midwest regional games going to be on FSN-North for sure or is this a hope and a prayer at the present time?

The UND-Princeton game will be on FSN North and on Altitude 2. The Wisconsin-Denver game is only scheduled on Altitude 2 at this point, FSN North will be showing Minnesota-Boston College. The final game for the Midwest regional on Sunday will be on ESPNU.

  3. Where was that announced?

An e-mail from someone at FSN to Mike McNamara at KNOX radio in Grand Forks. He contacted them earlier today to see if they would be broadcasting any of the games. FSN had a meeting scheduled at 1:00 today and he got the e-mail about 1:35 or 1:40.

  4. The reffing may have been poor, loose is probably a better term. But in no way was it terribly lopsided towards the Gophers. Overall a very fair series where the best team won, that's just how it is, no excuses.

Pretty hard to say the "best" team won a series of 3 games when all 3 games went to overtime. I would say that it was 2 very evenly matched teams.

  5. They can also set up side-by-side courts. I am pretty sure that the Alerus hosted Class A Boys and Girls State Tournaments at the same time a couple of years ago. IIRC they staggered the start times so that games were being played continuously all day.

  6. I have 1 pair (2 tickets) available for this weekend against Michigan Tech. The seats are at the top of Section 306, the end that the Sioux shoot twice. Asking $20 per ticket. The same seats may also be available on Sunday if that game is needed, just ask. The tickets are in Grand Forks and we can arrange for delivery or just meet at the game on Saturday. PM me if you are interested.

  7. I've had a hip pointer before and it hurts pretty much any time you move or it is bumped. But it is basically a bruise so it doesn't really prevent you from doing most things if you can take the pain. Because it is aggravated every time you move your leg in any direction it does take a while to fully heal.

  8. I don't understand why this theory that UND settled the nickname lawsuit because Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa wouldn't schedule us is becoming more and more popular (I'm not singling you out Goon as this theory is held by many on message boards). This recent vote by the NCAA members pretty much disproves that theory. I'm sure the scheduling ban played a role in some people's general outlook on keeping the Sioux nickname, but that's a separate issue than the settlement. The primary reason the lawsuit was settled was because the NCAA was going to amend its Constitution to specificaly give the Executive Committee the authority to enact policies such as the nickname ban. So even if UND had won in court, the Executive Committee, with its new authority, would simply have re-enacted the same policy and there's nothing UND could have done about it. So UND cut its losses and got what it could out of a settlement. There's nothing complicated or conspiratorial about it. UND would have settled the lawsuit even if it had no interest in playing Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa.

I agree with you. The NCAA found a way to change the rules during the middle of the game. UND could very well have spent a lot more money and won the lawsuit. And less than a month later the NCAA would have legally recreated the ban. Continuing would have been a waste of time and money. UND would have won the skirmish and lost the war. The settlement created a window of 3 years to find a solution.

The current problem is how the SBoHE and the NDUS have approached the topic since the settlement. We have seen little leadership in trying to work on a solution. If that continues a select few in tribal government will make the decision and the name will be changed before the end of the 3 year window. If they actively try to find some common ground and a solution that works for the vast majority then the nickname still has a chance to survive. But the only way I see that happening is if it goes to a vote of the entire tribe on each reservation.

  9. Those Massy ratings and quarter will get you a bowl of soup. Their relevance is nil. Yes, NDSU used to beat the jacks too, not any more. None of the dakota schools have the speed and athleticism to compete effectively with them at this point.

I want to know where you can get a bowl of soup that cheap.

  10. It would impact the other sports. Football, Basketball, Swimming, etc. host home playoff games.

No football playoffs for 5 years during the transition. Division I basketball would be part of March Madness, no home games because they play at tournament sites. Not sure if it would affect the NIT for the men now that it is owned by the NCAA. Shouldn't affect the womens NIT. I have no idea how it would affect swimming and diving. It would affect some of the less popular sports like soccer, but again not for 5 years because UND isn't eligible for the playoffs through the transition.
