Why waste good Jack Daniels by putting something like Diet Coke in it? Just drink it on the rocks or with a little water, the way it was meant to be served.

If you think the comparison of UND versus NDSU is anything close to a comparison of UW-Madison versus UW-GB you have absolutely no comprehension of the situation. And if you don't like reading about it you might find it less of a problem if you just visit other websites. But you might not want to go some place like Any Given Saturday either, sometimes it bleeds over into their discussions.

I think that UND would prefer to fill the November 20th date and have a bye in the middle of the schedule, but Sac State could be a good backup option.

You can try www.championshipsubdivision.com/fcs-schedules/2010-schedules but they have already pulled Hofstra and Northeastern.

This is the reason in a nutshell. Road games would cost twice as much in satellite time plus production costs plus travel expenses. Advertising is a tougher sell right now than it was in past years. Remember, this is additional advertising sales because these stations aren't usually in use if they aren't showing games. Everyone would love to see road games but a lot of the time it doesn't make sense financially for Midcontinent or WDAZ. Now if someone really wanted to watch them and would pay the costs, maybe something could be arranged. Of course you would have to give them some lead time, it's tough to make those arrangements in a few days.

It would be interesting to find evidence of that. I don't remember any reports of Chrysler paying for usage of the name, I must have missed that.

Division 1 Transition: Precursor for Perennial Mediocrity?
82SiouxGuy replied to breakin face's topic in Football
Thanks for the kind words. I have been pleasantly surprised by the relationship developing between UND fans and Texas Tech fans. I know that many of us have started following the Red Raiders on a regular basis and have become fans from a distance. I hope that the schools find a way to meet again on the gridiron. Good luck with whatever bowl game the Red Raiders end up playing in and with recruiting for next year. -
I do think it has been suggested. I know that the tribes have been asked what they would like to receive in exchange for the use of the name and they have not answered the question. They haven't wanted to even discuss it. Like I said, there is a segment of the Native American population that sees the exchange of money for the name as wrong, no matter how it is titled or structured. I think that the segment of the Dakota tribes that feels that way is much larger than for the Seminoles. Remember, the Sioux people still refuse the money offered for the Black Hills because it is a sacred or spiritual place. Money and possessions are not as important in the NA world as they are for many of us. Just because you haven't seen it talked about in public doesn't mean that it hasn't been discussed. The people making decisions for the tribes have been making the decisions on this issue for reasons other than money. No amount of money is going to persuade them to "sell out", which is how they would see it. And money probably wouldn't be the deciding factor for the regular tribe members either. But getting the decision made by the regular tribe members would be the best result for UND. Finding a way for the tribes to benefit could help, but it can't look like they are being bought off.

I've been wondering the same thing since the Denver series. The extra down time could be good for him. But if he is cleared by the doctors it might be good for him to get back on the ice sooner to get rid of some rust.

The message I have seen and heard repeatedly from Native Americans is that the name is not for sale. They don't want money for it. They would be insulted if money was offered. It is a matter of pride. So offering a gratuity would probably do more harm than good. The only way that money could be involved would be as part of a contract with the tribes, and I don't know if they would go for it then. It would have to be structured in such a way that the tribal council wouldn't look like they were selling out. It probably would have been a good thing if some kind of effort had been started earlier to find ways to really help the tribes directly on the reservations. I would guess that kind of help might be a touchy subject with some factions in the tribes, making it look like white people are telling them what to do or that they can't take care of themselves. Doing something now is going to come off as exactly what it would be, a last ditch effort to try and save the name. It would be hard to prove sincerity at this point and I really doubt that they would accept that help if it wasn't sincere.

I would think that it would be much harder to recruit for a transition team in basketball than in many other sports. The lure of "The Big Dance" is huge in basketball. Players want to have at least a chance to play on national (or at least regional) television. Having absolutely no chance to make the tournament would make for a tough sell. And not even having a chance for a real league title doesn't help. The Great West helps a little, but it isn't a long term or established league. Sometimes you can get lucky and pick up a player that really likes the school, or one that other schools overlook. But it probably isn't going to be fair to judge Jones for another 2 or 3 years at a minimum.

The only other FCS teams playing were in the playoffs. But that's beside the point. Congrats to the Sioux players and the entire team for a good win to close the season.

Congratulations to former Fighting Sioux player and coach Tim Tibesar, currently the linebacker coach for the Alouettes.

They did play a "Nail of the Game" with about 8-10 minutes left in the 3rd period. It was either Blood or MacWilliam (I don't remember for sure) dumping a Miami player along the boards. Actually it was a pretty good hit. And I remember at least 1 hit in the pregame video, a decent hit at center ice. But there weren't as many as normal. This isn't an REA issue. Almost every sports venue in the country, at least most professional and major college venues, have tightened up security. Crowd control has become very important to a lot of people. Many of these sports depend on families and business people to pay the way. The crazy "fans" won't pay for the sport. And things like behavior and language were starting to alienate some of the family/businessman base. That is why this has become an issue.

I'm pretty sure that they played for a National title last year. That's a proving something, and is a lot more than SCSU has done.

This was a new thread for the new game. Unfortunately for me, it was a short game.

A person can file a lawsuit for almost any reason. That doesn't mean the lawsuit has any merit, or that they have a chance of winning. This article just proves that there was a lawyer willing to try. It doesn't prove that there was a real basis for the argument. We all know that UND needed to add a sport to achieve gender equity, but did they have to add hockey? You may be correct and there might be a clause in Title IX that says you have to provide matching opportunities, but this doesn't prove it.
-
I'm sure they had projections and a plan. My guess is that they didn't reach those projections. And part of the reason they probably didn't reach projections is because it took longer than expected to just be competitive. My guess is that they thought the program would be competitive after 4 or 5 years. Instead they took until last year to even become competitive. But the future is bright on the ice, so attendance should start increasing next year. They may never sell out the Ralph (maybe against Minnesota?) but they may be able to get a nice crowd in the lower bowl for a lot of games in the next few years.

The boundaries of bad behavior have been pushed in much of society over the past several years. And that is more true of sports than just about anyplace else (except maybe music). A lot of behavior and language that are accepted now would have been considered in bad taste not that many years ago. I think that it has reached a point where the core is pushing back a little bit. A little correction is probably overdue. But everyone has to be careful that they don't overreact and push things back too far in the other direction. I still think a little consideration of others would go a long way to prevent that overreaction.

It works for the WWE doesn't it?

I am pretty sure that you are correct. UND could have added any women's sport to comply with Title IX. The main reasons that they chose hockey were the fact that they already had the facilities that could be used, there was a growing interest in women's hockey in the region and the thought that it might grow large enough to pay for itself or come close eventually, much like women's basketball had done. No other sport had mass appeal to female students. No other sports available had any chance of coming close to break even. Women's hockey hasn't done that yet, but with the interest that should grow over the next few years it still has a chance to get much closer to that goal than any of the other options.
