Weren't we always told they also had to drop the "Fighting" and just be the "Illini"?

No. Fighting was never a problem for the NCAA. Look at all of the other nicknames that use Fighting. Some people assumed that using the word Fighting with a Native American word or name was the problem, but that was only true for a limited number of individuals and not the NCAA.

The website has a UND football logo on it.  Not good publicity.  I'm surprised the Alerus or the GF media wasn't publicizing it...just seems like a weird deal all around.

It was on the Alerus website. I saw it listed last week when I was looking for another event. But the Alerus Center isn't going to spend money promoting an event for an outside group. That normally isn't part of the rental agreement. The only time the Alerus would do that is if the renting party paid extra for those services. And normally the media doesn't go looking for events to publicize. If the group putting on the event didn't reach out to the media, the media may not even know that it was going on. At first glance this looks like a group (or individual) that was way over their head and didn't have a clue about how to put on an event of that size.

That sucks. I remember when Baker discontinued use of the logo a lot of people were pissed.

That was right around the time that the Standing Rock Tribal Council had their first vote asking UND to quit using the Sioux nickname. I don't remember the actual timeline as to which came first. But the main reason UND quit using the logo was because the Chicago Blackhawks told them to quit using it. UND didn't really have a lot of choice in the matter if I recall. The geometric had been used for quite a while before that, so they went with it as the main logo.

Have they ever released hockey jerseys, with the Blackhawk logo? That would be a nice throwback jersey to get.

UND doesn't have rights to use the Blackhawk logo. That is a major reason why they quit using it, along with complaints from people even then. They will not be releasing throwback jerseys with the Blackhawk logo.

That still doesn't answer the issue it brings up. Why would they get a 20 minute OT to decide a game when all other non conference games are 5 minute OTs? If I had to guess, I'd guess only a deciding goal in the first 5 minutes would be recorded as a win in the PWR and everything after 5 would be a tie. It is an interesting question tho so wondering if anyone can confirm.

Hrbek signed a home town "discount" contract, along with Puckett (who was from Chicago but adopted Mpls as hometown), Mauer though sought and got his hometown "plus" contract knowing the Twins could ill-afford not to sign him so he tightened the noose.  Thx Joe.

Puckett signed the first contract that worked out to be $3 million per year and was the highest paid player in baseball at the time. That doesn't look like a hometown discount deal. Mauer could have made more money if he had signed with a team like Boston. He didn't take a big discount from Minnesota, but probably could have gotten even more somewhere else.

  7. If you're trying to make it resemble a logo that includes a Native American headdress, don't you think that people will say it looks like a Native American headdress? The NCAA policy and the Settlement Agreement between UND and the NCAA say that anything that resembles Native American imagery is not allowed.

Who recruits the players who pass the ball and shoot free throws? Brian Jones.

The head coach (the ultimate decision maker)  receives credit when the team wins and, rightfully so, receives blame when the team loses.

When Hooker makes a great play or scores a bucket it's because he is a great player. When he misses a last second shot or throws the ball away it's the coaches fault for recruiting him. Got it.

It was basically a line brawl towards the end of a game. The ref was trying to separate two players and the Ohio State guy ended up on the ground with the ref on top of him. Then with the guy on the ground, the Michigan guy punched the Ohio State guy's head into the ice. I feel he went beyond just a fight and deserved more than 1 game.

The rule is pretty much cut and dried. One punch can be considered a fight. The penalty for a fight is a game DQ. That means he would leave the game and miss the next game. I don't know if he missed the rest of the game, but if it was close to the end of the game he probably didn't play much if at all. Then he was suspended for the next game. That's what the rule states. He isn't going to get more than that unless the incident is really bad. One punch, even if the punch receiver is defenseless, isn't going to get more than the 1 game. To get more he would probably have to get injured, or they would have to observe an obvious intent to injure, or it would have to be a real beating. Even in those cases it would be rare to get more than a single game.

Touche, not sure why I didn't think of that since I know the rule. Probably because that punch should be considered fighting and only got the guy a game

43 minutes ago, UND-RedSox fan said:

I think it was different than a normal fight too. You don't see a person down on his back with a ref on him getting punched in the face very often. I guess I think of a fight as both guys on their feet and once one guy can't go anymore the other person needs to stop. You just can't punch a guy when he can't fight back.

If you look at the rule I quoted you will see that a single punch thrown can be considered fighting. If a person doesn't reciprocate they won't be called for a penalty. I haven't watched the video, but it sounds like this incident fits under this rule and the puncher basically got the 1 game suspension in the rules for fighting.

  11. 1 hour ago, GFG said:

I completely agree. He unloaded a punch on a player that was defenseless because he was subdued by the official. One game for that is ridiculous. Doesn't that set the precedent that full on fighting would be a one game suspension if it's your first suspension?

I believe that the penalty for fighting in the NCAA is a game DQ which means getting kicked out of that game and missing the next game. That's for the first time in a season. And I believe that you get suspended for 2 games the second time in a season.

Rule 48 - Fighting or Punching

    48.1

    Fighting or Punching

    - A player shall not fight an opponent or participate in a fight, on or off the playing surface. A punch thrown may be considered fighting.

    PENALTY—Disqualification.

A player who does not retaliate after being struck shall not be assessed a penalty.

    48.2

Clearing the Area of a Fight

    - When a fight occurs on the ice, all non-participating players, excluding goalkeepers, must proceed immediately and directly to their respective players’ bench at the signal of the referee.

Goalkeepers must remain in the immediate vicinity of their goal crease

PENALTY—Minor to offending player(s) or goalkeeper.

    48.3

Continuing or Attempting to Continue a Fight - A player shall not resist an official or persist in continuing or attempting to continue an altercation after the player has been ordered by any on-ice official to stop.

PENALTY—Misconduct, game misconduct or disqualification, at the

    discretion of the referee.

    48.4

Instigating - When an altercation results in penalties on both teams and, in the opinion of the official, one player was instrumental in starting the altercation, that player shall receive an additional penalty for instigating.

    PENALTY—Minor.

I guess it fair to say it hasn't been a great week for the Bison Men's and Women's basketball coaches in the PR department.  Apparently winning is very important to Richmond.  It seems to be a trait of all the Bison coaches.  Winning before discipline or following through on punishment.     The timing of the lifting of the suspension seems to be very coincidental to the other injury.  Can't make this stuff up.

Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing.

I haven't talked to him lately, but in the past I believe he has worked in construction and woodworking plus taught art besides the money he has earned from selling his art. I know he has done a lot of camps and other programs for kids. Like many people, he probably has several sources of income.

Also, I'm pretty sure that Adam is from a small town northeast of London, England not Australia. He came to Grand Forks to get his Master's degree.

So 4% is about $20 million for UND. Then why is NDSU (subject to same 4% cut order) only talking about $6.4 million in cuts? (See 'Bresciani' thread this forum.)

That would be a similar size cut to the $7.1 million that UND will need to find in the General Fund and Tuition. Either UND won't really have to cut money from the Contracts and Grants budget (and Med school budgets), or NDSU hasn't gotten to that part of the budget.

A closer look at the NDSU budget tells me that either they aren't talking about even close to what they need to do, or that UND is looking at going way too far. Their General Fund and Tuition budget is more than $241 million. 4% of that would be more than $9 million. Their Grants and Contracts is another $202 million, so 4% of that is $8 million. Total budget is a little short of $444 million and 4% of that is well over $17 million. The 2 schools aren't on the same page at all.

  15. 1 hour ago, UND1983 said:

    It's 25 million now?

UND has a total budget of approximately $511,000,000. The Governor is asking for a reduction in budget of just over 4%. That would total approximately $20,000,000. If you included the original $5,000,000 shortfall that has been discussed since last spring it would total $25,000,000. However, Schafer announced on Monday that they had already taken care of the $5,000,000. So UND will have to look at finding the $20,000,000. This doesn't all come out of the general fund and tuition budget that educates the students. That budget is just under $178,000,000 (tuition alone is about $115,000,000) or just over 1/3 of the total budget. So they would need to cut about $7,000,000 out of the tuition and general fund, bringing that budget number down to around $171,000,000. The current grants and contracts budget is a little under $233,000,000 and the total budgets for the Med school and Med contracts and grants is about $101,000,000. These will also need to be reduced by about 4%.

Clarifying for a UNO perspective (not many boards out there to read up on college hockey)....

The novelty of a brand new arena was a selling point for the opening series, nothing more. If you look at UNO's attendance numbers ever since the program started, it has been steady in the 4-6 range. Support for the team is higher than ever. Season tickets sold out and more students are attending now that the arena is on campus (and serves beer). Still room to grow, though. There is a very solid core of dedicated fans down here. Even when Husker football and Creighton basketball were playing at the same time (very popular local events) UNO still got a great turn out for the Minnesota-Duluth series.

Here are the current attendance numbers (first is the attendance, second is the size of the arena, the third represents the percentage of the arena that is filled each game):

    1) North Dakota 11,738,-11,634, (100.9)

    2) Minnesota 9,680-10,000 (96.8)

    3) Wisconsin 8,690-15,325 (56.7)

    4) Nebraska-Omaha 6,698-7,898 (84.8)

    5) Minnesota-Duluth 6,387-6,600 (96.8)

    6) Penn State 6,091-5,782 (105.3)

    7) Colorado College 6,020-7,343 (82.0)

    8) Massachusetts-Lowell 5,455-6,003(90.9)

    9) Michigan 5,351-5,800 (92.3)

    10) Boston College 5,307-7,884(67.3)

    11) Denver 5,200-6,026(86.3)

    12) Ohio State 5,004-17,500(28.6)

    13) Connecticut 4,982-9,000(55.4)

    14) Michigan State 4,903-6,470(75.8)

    15) New Hampshire 4,871-6,110(79.7)

    18) St. Cloud State 4,293-5,159(83.2)

    31) Western Michigan 2,875-3,667(78.4)

    38) Miami 2,435-3,200 (76.1)

All Big 10 teams are in the top 15, but I would say the NCHC is still represented pretty well. Not much of an argument to make against the NCHC as far as attendance goes.

Historically, attendance bumps because of new arenas or venues last for 2 to 3 years at least, not just for an opening weekend series.

  17. "We" don't have to celebrate a kid just because he is from North Dakota. I choose which teams and players I want to root for or against. You can choose to root for or celebrate whomever you would like, but don't keep telling us that we have to root for someone just because they are from North Dakota. I didn't celebrate or root for the Potulny boys when they tried to make it in the NHL and they were from Grand Forks. How many of you were rooting for them? I don't plan to root for Wentz. If he makes it, good for him. If he doesn't, he will fit in with the 99.9% that aren't successful in the NFL. Wentz is trying to be successful in a career where very few are actually successful. How many good NFL quarterbacks are actually playing right now? Maybe 15 or 20? Definitely less than 25. That includes guys like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady that have been in the league for years. There are maybe 100 total QB jobs in the NFL. The reality of the situation is that the odds are stacked against Wentz being a successful starting quarterback. Most years only 1 or 2 really make it. Only time will tell if he is part of that 1 or 2. But I don't have to root for him.

UND will play two series against Omaha every season since they are our conference "rival". Denver has CC, SCSU with UMD, and Miami with WMU so we get Omaha.

Sorry, I typed Omaha but meant St. Cloud for this year. I believe that you are correct about the rivals and UND will miss the others once every 3 years.

UND is 6-0-0 at Lawson and 1-1 at the Ralph against the WMU Broncos. I am not sure why UND has played three series at WMU and only one at the Ralph?

Video of the goals from tonight's game. Enjoy....

The teams don't play 4 games against every team in the league every year. UND only played Miami and Nebraska Omaha one series each this season. UND and WMU played home and away during the first year of the NCHC, only played 1 series at WMU the second year of the league, and this was the first of a home and away this season. By the end of this season it will be 3 at WMU and 2 at UND. It will even off in a few years when WMU will only play at UND.

Dear Branders.  For you, pleasing the hockey program is everything.  Fail to do that, and your brand will not catch on.  You will hear endless talk of how the last logo was the "greatest in all of college athletics,"  or a variety of other such superlatives.  But remember:  That logo was a hockey phenomenon, going unused by all of the other athletic programs.

It was actually used by all athletic programs. The hockey program used it more extensively than the others. Some used smaller versions of the logo on their uniforms. Some didn't put the logo on their uniform at all. All used it in marketing materials. It was normally used when identifying the team on scoreboards and in the press. The logo was associated with all athletic teams from UND, it was just used more extensively by the hockey program.

  22. UND Student fees from https://und.edu/admissions/student-account-services/und-student-fees.cfm            $569.98 per semester or $1,140 per year

NDSU Student fees from https://www.ndsu.edu/admission/cost_tuition/cost/               $1,216 per year

UNI Student fees from https://www.uni.edu/tuition/2015-2016-undergraduate-tuition-fees                    $1,169 per year

USD Student fees from http://www.usd.edu/financial-affairs/business-office/tuition-and-fees/undergraduate               $1,125.6 per 12 credits University support fee plus $520.80 per 12 credits for General Activity fee

SDSU Student fees from https://www.sdstate.edu/admissions/financing/undergrad/cost/                     $1,920 per year

It appears that Hammersmith may be attempting to identify the amount of student fees that go to athletics (and I wouldn't put a lot of faith in the accuracy of the numbers put out by that USA Today annual report). These are the actual student fees as reported by each school's web site (with links to the pages for verification). It appears that NDSU students are already paying more in student fees overall than either UND or UNI, the Athletic Department just may not be getting as much. USD students seem to be getting the short end of the stick. I didn't post UNO's because they list every fee separately, but don't give enough explanation for all of them to know which need to be included for this discussion.
