The Committee is planning to appeal the dismissal of their lawsuit. They filed a notice with the court yesterday. Someone needs to convince them to let it go.

It's a very poorly written piece of legislation. On top of that, they are trying to put it in the Constitution where it couldn't be changed for 7 years. If people want to eliminate property taxes they should propose a plan to take care of it. Taxes can't just go away. They need to be replaced with another revenue source or with cuts to the budget. Just saying that the legislature will take care of it doesn't cut it. Plus, I don't like the idea of turning over all funding decisions to the legislature.

I am also concerned about individuals and small groups claiming religious reasons for doing a wide variety of things that may be against the law or against the normal activities of the population. An example given has been polygamy, but I would include tax evasion, not following zoning ordinances and just about anything else. They probably wouldn't be able to get away with some of the more serious things, but fighting the issues would make a bigger problem for the court system. The biggest problem is that it is very vague and not well written, much like the property tax measure. A piece of advice for groups trying to get measures passed, find someone with some skill in crafting legislation so that people can understand the measure. Otherwise it will get a lot of No votes just because people don't want to pass something they don't understand.

I wouldn't be opposed to the idea, and it can be a great marketing tool. But it probably depends on what a new nickname would be and how the mascot would work with the name and logo. It may be easier to have a mascot if the nickname isn't related to any humans past or present.

One of the best reasons to come from Texas to UND.

I haven't decided on Measure 1 because of the factors that Hammersmith mentioned, but also lean toward No because of Carlson. It is a definite No on 2, probably a No on 3 and a Hell Yes on 4.

Some kids want to get away from home for a variety of weekends. Maybe he saw something he liked when they played UND.

I agree with you. I will probably still wear Sioux gear for a while off and on. But I will start buying the new items when they become available and will shift to it in support of the current athletes at that time.

The fighting part of Fighting Sioux only bothered a small group that thought it marginalized the tribes. I doubt that very many people would care whether fighting was added or not. It would be similar to Fighting Illini which was originally a tribute to Illinois residents that fought in World War I. It was almost a decade after the name was first used before any Native American imagery was attached to the name. That is why the Fighting Illini were allowed to keep the name, they removed the NA imagery and took the name back to its roots as more of a tribute to Illinois veterans.

Nodaks would be one of the first. But if you read the beginnings of sports nicknames it can get very interesting. Sometimes the nicknames changed multiple times within a short period until something stuck. The LA Dodgers nickname changed many times in the late 1800's and first 3 decades of the 1900's. Some of the college nicknames really had nothing to do with the school, just something that someone used. Fighting Irish is a great example. People assume that it was an Irish Catholic school. It never was. The school was started by a French Canadian priest. Theories on the origins of the nickname range from chants of competing fans because of the color of the uniforms, something a football coach said during a halftime speech because they had several Irish players, and possibly from the press. The school didn't go out and find it, it was given to them by someone else. When you get a nickname like that it isn't always flattering. Just look at some of the nicknames that kids get from their friends.

POLL: Should UND-NDSU Resume the Football Series?
82SiouxGuy replied to ShilohSioux's topic in Football
You really need to consistently be able to sell out a specific game, or know that the demand will be there to sell out the game, before you can add premium pricing. Are there specific games that NDSU has sold out? If not, that may be the real reason that NDSU hasn't implemented a premium pricing plan. Is NDSU now allowed to put playoff games on their regular schedule? Is NDSU allowed to sell tickets for playoff games before the season starts? That is the real difference between the situations. Having the UND game on the schedule allows for much more publicity, much more build up, a lot more build up of demand for tickets. Totally different situation than a playoff game. Plus, playoff games would have high demand for tickets by NDSU fans, while the ticket base would be broader for a UND-NDSU game. People are amused by the Sioux Sucks chant rather than hurt. NDSU and the fans keeps making such a huge point of being "over" UND and not wanting anything to do with UND. Yet the chant keeps coming up at regular season games, at playoff games, at celebrations for a National title (that didn't involve UND at all), even at private events where NDSU students or alums gather such as weddings. That rarely if ever happens at UND games or gatherings unless NDSU is involved with the game. That's why UND fans are amused by the constant assurances that NDSU is "over" UND. -
POLL: Should UND-NDSU Resume the Football Series?

Where did you get that? I said that someone was talking about NDSU scheduling of OOC games and you tried to deflect the conversation by bringing up Sioux Falls. I even said that we knew the issues with UND scheduling through the transition and including the game this fall. But you were trying to deflect the conversation away from NDSU scheduling and away from a UND-NDSU game by talking about UND issues. You were the one trying to compare scheduling. -
Many school nicknames in use today were started by people outside the school. A lot of them were first used by newspaper reporters. While writing stories about games it gets real boring to always say North Dakota. So they are going to find something else to use. Or other groups, like fans of other schools, may decide to use a name of some kind in chants. There is a pretty good chance that one of these names will catch on and others will use it. As tSic has said, control what you can. It is better for UND to come up with a new name rather than letting someone else attach a name that is less flattering.

You didn't like what was being said so you lobbed out a shot at UND. NDSU fans say they don't want to play UND because they want to play quality out of conference opponents. Someone points out that NDSU has not been able to schedule very many quality out of conference opponents at home and you throw out Sioux Falls. Sioux Falls has nothing to do with any out of conference opponents that NDSU has scheduled, and everyone on this board knows that UND has scheduled several non-DI opponents during the transition and even has 1 scheduled for this year. You were just taking a shot at UND to deflect from the conversation about NDSU scheduling. -
And just about everyone I know is voting Yes. They aren't threats if they follow through with actions. The sanctions are already in place and have already affected UND. They aren't just threats. And they aren't going away.

Wisconsin and UND were in the process of scheduling a regular hockey series when the sanctions went back into effect. Sorry, you're wrong. Minnesota had talked about continuing the rivalry, but hadn't been following up so it is hard to know if that would have happened. Some of us do attend sports other than hockey. I have season tickets for both hockey and football; and attend women's hockey, volleyball, and both men's and women's basketball games. I know several people that have season tickets for each of these sports. I don't know who you hung around with while in school, but sports was often a major topic of conversation while I was in school. That included while hanging out with my regular group of friends and while sitting around the classroom. Most students I knew had friends that were athletes. I knew people on the football, hockey, women's basketball, swimming and baseball teams off the top of my head and I met people that played some of the other sports. Just because you were in some secluded group doesn't mean that sports aren't a part of the average person's life. Football is not normally a blood sucker at UND, it can be very profitable when the team is doing well. Men's basketball can also be very profitable, especially when the school belongs to a conference with an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. And the better the league does, the more money they get. The other sports are in place for several reasons, including to give students more opportunities. But for people like you, they are needed because hockey can not exist on its own. To belong to the NCAA in Division I you have to have a minimum of 14 sports on campus. They can be broken down as 7 for men and 7 for women or 6 for men and 8 for women. The school has to support either football or basketball or both, plus whichever other sports they desire that are sanctioned by the NCAA. The school has to meet Title IX requirements. I also believe that there are some minimum scholarship limits overall to be part of Division I. So the other sports are important even if you only watch hockey. And I guess that you don't allow people to change their opinion or position as they learn more about the situation. Whatever your first impression is, that is what you are going to support for the rest of your life. Even if the situation changes. You may not realize this, but people actually adapt and change as the situation changes. The situation surrounding the nickname has been in constant flux for many years, well before the NCAA announced their policy in 2005. And the situation will continue to change. The rubber is now starting to meet the road for the University, now that the sanctions are in place. The sanctions have become real for many people in the past 6 months to a year. As it becomes real, and as people actually learn about or accept that the sanctions are real, it is only natural that many of them will change their position. That doesn't make them hypocrites. It makes them well informed. You can admire Fetch and Dave all you want, but their position that they would rather allow the athletic department be completely destroyed rather than change a sports nickname is not something to be admired in my opinion.

What, exactly, do you get out of trolling on the forum of another school? You aren't making any friends and you certainly aren't helping your argument with statements like this. You really add nothing to the discussion. -

But, that was just out of habit. They don't mean anything by it, they are just used to chanting meaningless statements. -

Since I believe that he's a narcissist, and he believes that the world revolves around him, he may not be a bit. But I agree, watching him spin his yarns can be very entertaining. The only constants in his world are his belief that he is right and everyone that disagrees with him is wrong, no matter what he says or how many times he changes the story. And when he can't find another way out he just declares it "subjective".

Dave has re-defined the words fine, finest, and pretty much every other word he uses. His definitions are whatever he needs to prove his point. Then he tells us later what he actually meant since none of us has the ability to understand how his "far superior mind" works. At this point Dave believes that Chicago State and Harvard are on the same level of education, and since Dave believes that, we should all just accept it as the truth. ;) ;) ;)
-
Actually, there are a lot of ways to determine whether schools are fine or not. It isn't subjective. You are just trying to twist and shout your way out of the trap you set for yourself.

It's almost surprising that there weren't more than 2 in the Great West. That isn't the company that UND should be keeping for any length of time.
