  1. If all of you want the wide-open style of hockey you better pray the Wcha opens it up cause with the clutching and grabbing that goes on now, it won't happen.

  2. I put up a post about this before but given the constant Finley debate I will say it again.

    I was at the Pepsi center for the meltdown and I re-watched the game three times since then. And here is the fact of the matter when it comes to who did and did not do what;

(Sans Johnn Filllipy) Genoway pretty much single handedly lost that game for us.

In all but one of the first five goals he made a horrible move or lack of a move that either allowed the shot or was the primary error that led to the shot. Please, before you contest this with me, I suggest you watch the game again. Just fast forwad to the goals (carefull, they come often). Further I can say that in three of the goals there was nothing Finley could have done to save the situation (please don't tell me he could have stopped the first goal, Genoway is out there figure skating and leaves the puck sitting there for an fast fast break. That was an very unexpected error and there would be no reason for finley to think Genoway would have melted that much.)

..I cannot remeber the fourth goal at the moment. I'll go watch it if anyone wants to make the bogus argument that Finley should have saved him. By the way, If I recall correctly on one of his goof-up goals Finley wasn't even on the ice with him. He had already changed- I think with Chorney...

Now where is the coversation about Genoway and whether or not the forward convert has a complete enough skill set and defesive acumen to succeed at the D1 level? let's start that thread.

    Here is what I have to say about Genoway;

Awesome skater. Often very aggresive offesive defensemen. Very good insincts and vision on the offesive side. Adequate on the defesive side but very green when it comes to defesive decision making and vision. Can be exposed by teams with offesive skill as seen against BC. This was not realized last year until the frozen four because the WCHA in its new defensive minded paradigm presented no team that had the offesive talent to expose the flaw.

Don't get mr wrong, I like Genoway. I like his intesity and he is obviously a great competitor but he aint a defensive expert.

Yep, cause the salty offense was just POURING goals past Muse....

  3. Now, some of you won't agree with this, some of you will. One of the main reason that UND become just a hotbed for NHL defensemen has a lot to do with coaching. Hale, Greene, Commodore, Jones, etc...they all developed under Brad Berry here at UND. Ask people around, not only the area, but the country who KNOW hockey and they will support the notion that Brad Berry was one of the finest defensive coaches in North America. When a player comes to a school like this it's to develop their play to get it ready for the next level. Finley is leaps and bounds ahead of where he was when he came in as a Frosh, but it's also my opinion that under Berry, as opposed to Eades (who is just fine in his own right), he may have been two years and out. Coaching will only go as far as a players drive will take him. I believe Finley has it and will be fine. He just needs a hardcore tune-up on some, if not most, of his skills. It's always great to have a Senior leader back, i'm just saying don't overstate his impact.

  4. I think the younger Toews will be a bigger impact player for the Sioux than older Jonathan was. Don't get me wrong, Jonathan is probably the most talented player that has ever come to UND, but the Little Toews's game suits UND style better and vice-versa. I can't wait to see this kid play. I think UND will have another great year. We have alot of talent back with the best recruiting class in the country coming in. Just cause they are fresman doesn't mean we can't win it all. Sometimes the younger players are so good it pushes the upper classmen to play a little harder.

    Um....ok?

  5. This was a tough situation for both sides for many reasons. First, in this day and age if you want the prized recruits, a college must go after them at ridiculous ages. Fifteen is a ridiculous age. When it comes down to it, the kid is the only one who ultimately gets to choose what will work best for him. Think of when your fifteen, there is no chance your ready to make decisions like that. At such a young age your not nearly mature enough to make life-choices. For UND, and as i'm sure will be the case with more schools, taking a chance on the really young kids (especially the canadian kids) will be a very dangerous thing and you will often get bit by it.

From the kids standpoint, giving a verbal commitment at fifteen means something, yes, but it's not legally binding by any means. It's been forever known, and widely considered true, that playing Major Juniors in Canada is a much faster track to the NHL than going the college route is. Any one who watched the Memorial Cup would know that level of hockey is much more equivalent to the NHL style, not the BS grab and hook that exists in college hockey today.

Lastly, the Gregoire situation is in NO WAY apples and oranges to this situation. It's almost worst, backing out of one at a much older age. Leave this Clarke kid alone. He's young, listening to others, and in reality did what MANY of us would do to. It was the right choice.

  6. Great to have you back Joe for your Senior season! First ever 1st round pick to stick around for the senior season.......great to have experience coming back on the D-Line, let's skate for #8 in 2009

    Ha Ha yep

  7. Which is why I again question the integrity of his parents and/or "advisors". Anyway, the QMJHL can deal with his showboating.

His showboating? Is that codeword for rediculous hockey skills. UND got played...it happens...it does. U of M lost it's best player at the middle point of this season. Stuff happens. O well

  8. It would appear that the residents of Grand Forks have once again decided to take one giant step backwards.

Absolutely right, how can they be so wrong three times in a row? Unfathomable!!!

  9. come Joe. join Duncan and Kozek and come back for one more shot at glory.

Yeah, sounds great provided he has a one way ticket to a power skating camp, so his raw speed can get far far better. A shooting camp (granted shooting camps don't exist, but just go with it), so he can get his "monster" shot of quickly so it actually get's to the net. It's amazing how when a guy takes five seconds to shoot guys get in the way and block it. And lastly, a plyometric camp so he can do somethin about having quicker and better feet, Cause right now his feet are the worst in the history of big-time college hockey. As long as that's all done bring em back. Why not.

P.S. We should also PRAY they don't have to play BC in the postseason again so all the forementioned flaws aren't grossly exposed again

  10. First off, scoring 16G and 20A in your freshman year is a hell of a lot better than a decent year. Secondly, I think Toews came in with a lot more fanfare than either Lee or Oshie.

Lastly, your point of Duncan playing on the DOT line and then with Oshie this year being the reason for his numbers I can agree with but what are the coaches suppose to do only put 4 guys on the ice when Oshie and Toews are out there. No they need to find someone who can gel with them and put the puck in the net and Duncan was the ideal fit for the situation. Case in point, should we take away the NHL Hall-of-Fame or diminish any of Jari Kurri's accomplishments just because he was able to play with Gretzky the majority of his career?

We'll all just pretend you didn't mention Ryan Duncan IN THE SAME BREATH as Jari Kurri...I don't care what comparison your making.

  11. duncan can't be drafted, he is too old. he will get a free agent contract after his senior season. he may or may not play in the nhl, because of his size and speed (or lack thereof), but he is a great hockey player and will have a career in hockey if he chooses to. you take a talent like toews off a line, and of course the other team will be able to focus on duncs and osh, but that doesn't mean they are not great, because they are both great and on the list of the best to wear the sioux sweater.

I would bet we could collectively come up with twenty to thirty players who have been and UND and were better hockey players than Ryan Duncan...maybe more. And thirty points sounds about right this year unless he plays with someone who can create for others, cause he sure can't create for himself

  12. I am thinking either way UND is going to be good next season. I see a lot of reason for optimism. I think the new goalie which I consider a blue chipper is going to be pretty good. Having Joe back would be good. I thought Tim Hennesy said that Joe was boing to be back anyways?

It's ok everyone...since goon here considers him a blue chipper i'm on board too...just outta curiosity...why do you, Goon, consider him a blue chipper? From when you went up north and scouted him?

  13. I got a hit off Helling in HS and use to wear a size 30 waist. Stop living in the "was". I care about what Mertens is going to bring to UND now, not that Koenig hung 35 on you as a Jr. in HS.

There was a debate about who was the better HS player. I gave my opinion. You are somehow misinterpreting my obvious statement into something ridiculous. "Living in the was"? Get real, I was just saying what I saw.

  14. I believe you but that was when all of you were 16. :D Mertens is entering UND as a collegiate Jr. Koenig was as good his Jr. year in college as he was a Sr. in HS and that might be a stretch. He hasn't been a "force" since coming to UND and I know injuries have played a big role in that, but to say Mertens is the same talent/skill as when you played him in HS is absurd. He will be the better college player when it is all said and done as compared to Koenig.

Obviously I was talking about them when they were both in HS.

I was no way implying that Mertens was the same skill level now as in HS. That is just absurd.

  15. There are kids at 5'11" in ND HS BB that post those numbers! If you are 6'6" or taller in ND and have any BB skill you should post numbers of 20 and 13 or better. Mertens will suprise some people next year. People wet themselves over Tyler Koenig before he was hurt, but Mertens is more athletic and more polished offensively.

Good lord, I played against them both and Koenig was head and shoulders better...not even close. Nothing against Mertens, Koenig was just an absolute force.

  16. so these college kids are drunk 24/7? the breaking of the bench is prolly drunk college kids but the harassing of a student in the dorms is just plain old bullying! I thought people left that stuff in high school but obviously I am wrong! for some odd reason these kids in the dorm felt the need to pick on this one kid. I feel for this kid and if anyone in the walsh dorm hall reads this forum PLEASE STAND UP FOR THIS KID!

I'm not sure why you're drunk at 2:16pm, but you sure do a great job sounding like a moron. Keep up the good work!
