How about the Purple Cows?  I think we have some unfinished business with Mankato.

I was thinking Mankato as well. I would imagine you can pick from a short list as to who the opponent would be: Mankato, UMD, St Cloud, Bemidji and then I'd throw in possible Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan. It's going to be someone who can bus. I would imagine they would try to get someone from out of conference if possible as well.

With Mitchell Miller announcing today that he'll be part of next years Freshman class, we are getting closer to finalizing the Freshman class. We know for sure.

    • Budy
    • Rizzo
    • Gaber
    • Ness
    • Sanderson
    • Kleven
    • Miller

One Forward spot remaining. I look at the pool of recruits that can fill that last spot and it's clear that Moore (Defenseman) is at the top of the list. I still like the idea that someone had of moving Rieger to Forward (claiming the last Forward spot) and bringing in Moore as well.

Would Louis Jamernik be a possibility? Won't he be too old for another year of juniors?

If they did pick Grand Forks they have other rinks close by; Thief River, Bemidji, Fargo.

It sure would be nice for the Grand Forks economy if this ever happened. I would envision a designated hotel per team with a designated restaurant catering meals. Would be great for those businesses.

Adams has shown he performs much better at Center.  I think we have 4 rock solid centers in Adams, Pinto, Weatherby, and Senden.  I think Senden is clearly your energy guy.  We could easily roll an interchangeable top 9 that is all about matchups without skipping a beat.

Exactly on Adams playing center as he even mentioned that he is much more comfortable at his natural position of center and thinks that is why he produced much better this year. Weatherby is tricky because I agree he is a natural center and performs much better there than at wing which is why I never thought he was a great fit with Pinto and Michaud simply because he isn't a wing and was never comfortable. Crazy good problem to have with such depth at center when a year or two ago we were talking about having too many 3rd/4th line centers having to play top 6 simply because we didn't have any top line centers.

I want to start out by saying that I really do not care a great deal about the Hobey, because the voters have been too regional about their viewpoints and not followed the standards for the award which are a combination of character and hockey IN THAT SEASON.  I have been to all but one frozen four in the last 32 years and enjoy all of the conversations that I have had with folks over the years regarding games and Hobey candidates.  There are many players that are deserving of the Hobey that have not won.  Since it is a seasonal achievement of hockey/character,  I do believe it should no doubt go to Kawaguchi.  I do not think it will, as voters will likely look at career and not season and the character part is very overshadowed.  Also, please do not kid yourself, the team the player plays for also has an effect on voters.  MN-Duluth has won 5 Hobeys, but I do not think many voters know that.  The Hobey also does not translate to success in the NHL.  Here are the five players from Duluth that have won the Hobey, and the number of NHL games that they played:

    Tom Kurvers            - 659

    Bill Watson               - 115

    Chris Marinucci       -    13

    Junior Lessard        -     27

Jack Connolly          -       0 , for a total of 814 games for all of the MN-Duluth Hobey winners.

I was in Boston for Zach's Hobey hat trick season, and his loss to Junior Lessard was one of the biggest injustices that I have seen.  It was great talking to Zach and I wished him success as he went forward to his professional career.  My personal opinion is that it was a senior vs. sophomore issue, and Zach did not have to be "the man" every night but was a consistent performer.  By the way, Zach has played in 1015 NHL games (200 more than the 5 MN-Duluth Hobey winners) and has scored far more goals/points than the five of these candidates together.  From a character standpoint he has always represented the university and team very well.  You can see by the number of times he has worn a "C" or "A" for his teams, he is well respected.  I am not saying this because I am a homer with green glasses.  If Ehn would have won the Hobey instead of Duncan, I would have been very happy for him.  He was a great guy on his team, member of a service academy, and an awesome player that year.  I do wish Jordan luck as we watch the Hobey presentation and I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

The big thing that went against Zach and I think will go against Guch the same way is the league player of the year vote. Voters see that Lessard was player of the year over Parise and Perunovich the same over Guch so how do you vote the Hobey for the other. Unfortunately I think the precedent is set and it doesn't bold well for our guy!

    Frattin was robbed!

Frattin for sure was robbed but it had everything to do with his past off-ice actions rather than what he accomplished on the ice that year. He was the best player in college hockey hands down but his past robbed him of the hobey.

Extra year of eligibility granted to spring but not winter athletes.

Makes sense to me. Would have been hard to justify granting another year of eligibility to winter sports when some teams seasons were over. Yes it sucks for seniors who didn't get the chance to compete for a national title but it's the way they had to go in my opinion.

I have heard some say he needs another year to work on his skating.  What is one more year going to do for that.  If that hasn't improved by now, maybe give the next level a chance to improve it. People act like another year is going to do wonders for him.  He may end up being a lot like Ryan Duncan, who was an incredible college player, but maybe be missing an element to be a consistent performer at the next level.  That being the case, staying another year and getting his degree and maybe a championship wouldn't be a bad decision, but if he chooses to take the money now and start his career, more power to him. I don't think one more year here is going to make or break his playing career because unless he finds the right situation he most likely will be a borderline NHL player like a Corban Knight and Ryan Duncan who had a few limitations that hurt their chances at sticking at the next level and still had nice hockey careers.

Duncan is who I would compare him too. Both smaller and not great skaters which makes playing at the next level difficult. I think staying another year would be a benefit for him.

I agree.....you don't need a lot of minutes from your fourth line in the National tournament with all of the TV timeouts.

I agree but we will still roll four lines and I don't think there was any difference in that line inserting Weatherby over Caulfield. I could argue it was better in previous weeks with Caulfield .

  10. So Playoff time is finally here! My take on this team is that depth is their strength. I know they have tried to add a little fire to the Pinto-Michaud line by moving Weatherby there but I don't think that moved the needle enough from Caulfield to keep it together. Again I feel depth is our strength and having a lineup of Guch(hopefully this weekend!)-Adams-MishMash, Michaud-Pinto-Caulfield, Smith-Senden-Hain, and Blaisdell-Weatherby-Bowen (Yon) and rolling 4 lines can really wear down teams. I think this lineup gives us our best shot moving forward and you can always move Weatherby up to the Pinto line when shortening the bench.

16 & 18 can't do squat, they looked pathetic last night. You are right about putting 26 with them. Cole will take the heat and just maybe they will have enough space and time to actually do something.

I thought Adams may have been our best forward last night. Mishmash really needs to step up though!

Agree completely. This is a building block type class this year. Most of those forwards will be 4 year players for us and hopefully we'll get 3 years from Sanderson.

Assumption: 7 senior and 1 junior/soph spot leaving

My initial thoughts on the incoming list is:  F - Gaber, Budy, Rizzo,  Ness, Portz    D - Sanderson, Kleven, Moore

I'd be surprised to see Miller as he is just draft eligible this year and isn't rated in the first couple rounds.

I agree with your first 4 forwards but I think they have Portz play another year in the USHL. I think simply because he is a late bloomer and wouldn't have any hurt feelings playing another year as I'm sure that was the plan all along. Not sure if that means Bowen or Halliday come next year though as I think both could use another year. I think as we have been saying for quite some time that this class will simply be addition by subtraction.

I do agree with your D though although it sounds like Miller is making a strong case to come in next year but I think simply Moore has to come as he is a year older. Both are having nice years.

Went to Omaha. Visit was fun. But I'll never go to an outdoor game ever again. Worst game I've watched live in 40 YEARS of watching hockey

Amen. If u enjoy watching a game on the big screen with 70,000 other people, outdoor games are for u. U can’t see anything live from ur seats. No thanks!

Don't forget Penn St fans are gonna buy tickets as well.  Penn St has an enrollment of 27,939.  The averaged over 6000 per game last year.  Will definitely be interesting to see how much blue will be in the stands in Nashville.

One huge factor for Penn St is they play Iowa at home that same Saturday. I was surprised they scheduled this game on a day when Penn St played football at home so I think that will greatly reduce any casual Penn St fan making the trip and greatly reduces their total number in attendance.
