We already have 3 defensemen scheduled to come in next year to replace the 3 we have that are out of eligibility. And I don’t think any of them are going to be playing another year of junior. Emery, Strathmann won’t be. Jubenvil ages out. So we’d have to make room for a ninth D unless there’s an unexpected departure.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Gruba, and would like him at UND, but just curious how we’d make room.

Oh yeah you're right. I don't know why I was thinking we would be losing 4 and not 3. And yes those 3 are definitely not playing another year of juniors. I'm guessing we probably aren't in then as we don't have room.

Boy Bubs and team needs to lock up Leo Gruba before he heads to the goofs

This is one I was wondering if we would have any interest in? Older so would need to come in next year but I would think we could certainly make room with a few guys probably playing another year of juniors. And I just noticed that Heisenberg has Ausmus crossed out for us now? Anyone confirm he is no longer a commit?

I wish they would just ditch this idea. We've tried the white out and green outs before and our crowd just has never caught on. Sure there will be probably 70% wearing green but it will never be like those NHL arenas where literally everyone is doing it.

You could've put anything behind "Fighting" and it would've won: Go Fighting Haberdashers!

The new hawk-only secondary is an improvement.

100% correct. I've said this all along. The "Fighting" definitely swung the vote but not like there was a good option. They all sucked!

@brianvf, this make more sense today*? ;)

*Simpson not Mooney off the Schloss-list.

On that front, does all these commits help or hurt our chances of landing Mooney now? It sure seems like we might be done especially if we can land Lindberg?

Sounds like it may be awhile before Mooney makes a decision. That may give UND a better chance though if they can get him to come for a game. Still feels like a long shot there. Potter decision will likely come earlier and probably a better chance we get him.

Well hopefully you're correct. That was my feeling as well that the longer it takes Mooney to decide the better chance we have. I've just had this bad feeling that the Gophs get both though.

We need to land a couple high-end forwards now.

This 100% is where we need to totally flip the script with our recruiting. The big recruiting battles we seem to have won over the years have been with D. We need to beat out Minny, Mich, BU etc. on some of these big-time forwards! I know Swanson and Boisvert but we need to start winning with Mooney, Potter etc!

I don't think we were ever in on Morin. I wish we were; he was one of my favorite prospects in this class, but we never seemed to be in the mix. Gophers were in the mix, so glad he's not going there.

If we land Lindberg, Laurila and either Potter or Mooney (in addition to O'Neil and Schultz), this could still be an incredible class, but we need those to fall our way.

It's certainly feeling like these two are musts now as I don't have a good feeling on Potter or Mooney.

    Of this speculated list:

    • Bryn Chyzyk (Waterloo GM)
    • Dillon Simpson (UND alum)
    • Matt Smaby (Waterloo HC)
    • Dallas Steward (12 years exp)
    • Jason Ulmer (Volunteer Assistant)

I see nothing on the Waterloo site if that means anything.

Total guess on my part based on wanting a D coach. Smaby was who they wanted but couldn't get to his number.

I've expected Simpson to coach in some capacity at UND ever since his last game.

If those names are accurate and Smaby wants the job, I don't know how he doesn't get it. He almost got the position when Karl was hired. It sure seems like the position was written for him.

Since we already have two commits that are forwards from the group that just became eligible to recruit, I'm hoping this doesn't mean we aren't in on some of the other big names like Mooney, Potter, or Morin.

I would think those three are definitely players that will be jumping directly to college hockey where as Schultz could potentially be a player that plays a year of juniors after high school I would think so different recruiting years potentially.

He gives a little background into each, but here are the names on his list:

    James Hagens
    LJ Mooney
    Logan Hensler
    Zachary Morin
    Sascha Boumedienne
    Sam Laurila
    Garrett Lindberg
    Cullen Potter
    Cole McKinney (UM)
    William Moore
    Lukas Sawchyn
    Charlie Trethewey
    Andrew O'Neill (UND)
    Caleb Heil
    Masun Fleece
    Drew Schock
    Jake Stuart
    Jacob Rombach
    Cooper Simpson
    Carter Murphy

Thank you! A few on there that I don't recognize.

The schloss is def missing some higher end kids…PuckPreps 3-5 rankings are gone. I’m guessing schloss knew we were out on a few kids and didn’t include them.

Can anyone post a list or is that not allowed? I can't read the article and have been wondering who the 20 are?

The seven I'm watching most are Hensler, Mooney, Lindberg, Laurila, Cullen Potter, O'Neill, Heil.

I don't think we will be hearing anything on Heil as he is playing in the Hlinka Gretzky cup currently.

Since Makar, how many players have been one and done? Recently most are staying two years.

Makar played two years of college but it does seem like all these high end first round kids are staying more than one year now though.

Can anyone think of a player UND has taken directly from the NAHL? i cant think of any off the top of my head. A bunch have went NAHL to USHL to UND.

Connor Gaarder I believe but he was basically an emergency pickup late in the summer when JT Miller bailed.

Johnson should be entering his freshman season this year after two additional years in USHL which were needed. Mistakes were made by coaching staff and the player and his advisors.

Moore was wildly inconsistent and did not handle aggressive forechecks very well.

I have mentioned this many times on this board but I agree this was a very hypocritical move by the staff in not brining in one much more highly touted freshman because they wanted and thought he needed a year in the USHL (yes I know other factors as well) for another that clearly was never close to ready for college hockey. And after this season, they clearly realized there mistake as he didn't get a sniff in the second half of the season.

I'm bored, so here's my line chart for game 1 this season :):

    Blake - Berg - Gaber
    James - Schmaltz - Perron
Kunz - McLaughlin (I'd be cool with flipping 2C and 3C) - Strinden
    Johannes - Jammer - Emerson

    Pyke - Pehrson
    Wiebe - Zmolek
    Benoit - Livanvage
    Komzak

    Persson
    Hedquist

Definitely switching McLaughlin and Schmaltz. I think Schmaltz is the ideal 3rd line center on a good/great team. He's really had to play out of position (maybe not the correct word as he stilled played center) due to lack of top line centers the last couple years.

He just assumed UND was going to get a transfer goalie and picked Persson as the likely choice. Lucky guess is all.

Him and Duluth media types have made it their entire personality to make cheap shots at UND’s use of the transfer portal.

I actually heard rumors last year that Persson was going to be our goalie but he obviously didn't enter the portal until this year so it wasn't overly shocking news to anyone.

Addresses Michigan, but also names MSU and UND as other "aggressive" schools.

I'm not sure it insinuates MSU or UND were tampering only that they were aggressive in picking up players from the portal which is obviously very true. From how I read it, only Michigan was accused of actually tampering but I certainly agree it's out there and always will be with the portal moving forward.
