Down goes the undefeated #1 team!
Cornell beats Providence 2-1 in OT to end their perfect season. Also, Ohio State beats BC, 3-2. Wouldn't have predicted that one.
Per Brad, that was Providence's first loss in exactly 9 months. And they're last non-OT loss is February 15. That's nuts. It's like that streak Union went on a couple years ago.
I'm sure everyone at BC will blame it on Colin White being gone for WJC.

I think the Swede's goalie was the difference in this one.
Which isn't to say that Nedeljkovic played badly. He was great against Canada, too.

Chris Dilks said that MacInnis is a total drain on Schmaltz-Boeser. But they prob threw Boeser back on the top line with DeBrincat gone, since that's what they did after he got tossed on Satuday.

Once again nil to nil after one period
not quite the intimidating home ice crowd there, Sweden. Quiet ...
Technically it's not home ice, since it's in Finland.

@USAHockeyScores on twitter has play by play updates, as least.
-
Canada's first opening day loss since 98.
-
Colin White...BC freshman, I think.
-
Great chance by Matthews right now after a feed from Boeser.
-
Boeser playing up with Matthews and Tkachuk after Debrincat's ejection. Donato now playing RW with Schmaltz.
-
The US with about 3 minutes of solid pressure in the o-zone. Canada calls a time-out after their second icing from the same 5 players stuck on the ice.
-
Canada scores 5 min into the 2nd. Great initial save but making it put the goalie out of play for any further attempts.
-
US goalie had a phenomenal save that period; Canada player was already celebrating.
MacInnis had a decent set-up for Boeser on the other end, but it got lost in Boeser's skates.
Lots of chances both ways, but Canada seems just a little bit stronger in my opinion.

End of 1, tied at 0. 2:20 left on the major. Schmaltz getting a decent amount of PK time.
-
Dumb move by DeBrinkat. Blatantly intentional spear after the whistle. 5 and the game.

Corban Knight with his first goal of the season tonight.
Almost as cool is that Jaromir Jagr assisted. (Great trivia answer someday.)
Knight is certainly making a case for himself in Florida. I think his FO win % is in the upper 60s right now.

Even without the player-specific montages in the second half, that was awesome. I wouldn't mind seeing the ice effects they did in the first part of that video!

I believe Brad said it's been at least 17 years since a UND goalie had a 40-save shutout. Not bad. Part of it is this team's complete sell-out mentality when it comes to playing defense. That comment applies to both defensemen and forwards. I remember there was a stretch last night when Duluth was putting on sustained offensive pressure, and Cam lost his stick. One of the other guys was trying to corral Cam's stick back to him, paused for a brief second to drop and block a shot, and then got back up to finish getting Cam his stick.
Hopefully Cam is good to go. When asked about waving off Mark Poolman twice in the third, Cam said something about 'just wanting to get the game over with'.

I'm sure UND fans would put up better numbers, but we're also aided by having a Fri/Sat game schedule.

UMD coming off a no-contest series against a struggling WMU team. Hopefully we can surprise them with a couple of early goals to start the series in their own building.
Thursday night can't get here soon enough so I can start the drive down Highway 2!
With a bye week and CC before that. Their goalie had a shut-out streak of 3 1/2 games (ruined during the second period during Saturday night's WMU game), so that'll be an interesting match up vs the CBS line.

For those attending the games this weekend, Saturday is Duluth's annual toy drive. Feel free to bring a toy to contribute.

Especially considering that same Swiss team lost to the Swedes 8-3 on Thursday. This is the worst Canadian team I've seen in quite a few years.
