I'm actually not totally against the name change..
Diggler replied to ESPNInsider's topic in UND Nickname
Nick Coleman vs. Dick Youngblood? Plll. Even Youngblood's name could kick Coleman's ass. I mean just look at it, Dick Youngblood. That's the old school pro wrestling name right there. Back when it was real. Plus Jack Youngblood played in the Super Bowl with a broken leg, is there any doubt Dick wouldn't fight to the death ala the retarded weather guy on Anchorman? You know Youngblood would kill Coleman with a trident should it become neccessary. Sure he kinda looks like Beano Cook, but that doesn't matter. Coleman looks like a freaking elf from Santa's Workshop -
In the picture (#6) of Chorney, they have him going to Denver in the caption. Knuckleheads. Pictures #8 and 18 make me sad. No wait, they don't. You suck AZSioux.

Who expects Sioux to symbolize an entire race? When at hockey games do they say "If you see GrahamKracker walking down the street, he represents every single Sioux!"?
-
I thought you just had a problem with the name. You don't like the logo either? Eh, who cares anymore. This discussion truely is going nowhere and is becoming rather pointess.
-
There needs to be an ultimate solution to this thing. Either a referendum where all Sioux vote on whether or not to keep the name or UND meeting with all the tribes and coming to a compromise.
-
The two tribes are Standing Rock (against the name) and Spirit Lake (for the name).
-
The article brings up good points, but none of that changes the fact that the NCAA ruling is very broad and under the stipulations they gave for banning many Native American nicknames, many other nicknames should also be banned.
-
That doesn't seem to be why the Executive Commitee made the decision though. Whether or not the school has support didn't seem to matter. The decision on who was offensive and who wasn't seemed rather arbitrary. Just like at Illini being banned but Aztecs being ok. That's just dumbfounding. How many Seminole Tribes are there? More than one in Florida and one in Oklahoma? Also is Spirit Lake Lakota/Dakota/Nakota/etc. and are there any other tribes that are the same as Spirit Lake? Looking it up it says Sisseton Wahpeton which is Dakota. And there is also Sisseton Wahpeton in South Dakota. Is this right? I hope you understand this and I don't sound like an idiot, though I'm sure I do. Another question. How are Tribal Leaders elected? Democratic, duh. Everyone from the tribe votes, correct? Not just those who live on the Reservation. I thought of this question while looking for answers to my other question, so it isn't totally out of the blue.

I don't know. If all the NCAA member schools collectively made this decision, I'd be much more inclined to agree with you. The definitions given were very broad and open to interpretation about what they do and do not apply to. The fact that it was made by the Executive Comittee and the NCAA is already begining to back down on FSU, it seems that UND and other schools will win. Especially on the Western Regional, UND will win that. And KTF didn't recommend a book, just said she could.

I hope I'm not gonna get blamed for stuff redwing does too.
-
What about Sparky on Briggs at the Final Five? Blake also had a great assist on one of the honorable mention goals.
-
Don't insult Federov like that! It's Redwing. Poor Federov.

What about those that do want the name? Are they real Sioux and do they count? Or do you have an opinion like GrahamKracker where they aren't real Sioux, don't practice Indians Ways and are just "Fort" Indians?

This Native American loves the Fighting Sioux name

How about the UND Dakotans with a different logo. An eagle or Western Meadowlark. Or how about the UND Square Dancers? It's the official dance of North Dakota! -
I looked at the FAQ's and the BRIDGES website really doesn't answer any of those questions. It addresses why the name should be changed in broad terms and answers questions about the name for UND, but doesn't address anything outside of UND like the questions that Brent asked. This is one of the problems. People ask you questions and you really don't answer them. It's difficult to understand how someone feels when they don't answer the questions you pose to them. Perhaps answering the questions that you are asked won't change anyones mind, but it certainly won't hurt anything.

I'm simply asking for your personal feelings. Beyond what others say. Why do you agree with what the Sioux tribes have said? Why is that so hard for you to answer? Do you want the name to change because then you feel the assaults that have occured to you won't happen to you or others? What about the name is derogratory towards you? What does it cause? Why is it ok for for Native Americans to use Sioux, but it isn't ok for UND? Because UND aren't Native Americans? Only native americans should be allowed to use the name? Why? What if someone who wasn't a Native American, not UND, used the name in a respectful manner? Is that OK? There are many people on this board that want to understand your viewpoint, whether you believe that or not. That is why they are asking questions like this. When you don't express your viewpoint and reasoning or answer these questions, it makes it difficult to understand why you believe what you believe. Thank you. -

I wasn't comparing anybody to Smurfs. But if you want to take offense to it and tell me what I was doing, go right ahead. And I know Papa Smurf is the only one in red, that's why I wanted to red hat and pants for me. Perhaps you should stop picking and chosing what questions you want to answer and which questions you want to ignore. Not once have you given an explanation to what you find offensive and why you find it offensive. You simply said it is offensive and all but one of the Sioux tribes have asked for UND to change the name. Typically in a discussion of this type, a person gives their reasons for why they are arguing their side and their personal feelings. You haven't done that though. Don't you have an opinon of your own? If not, that's ok I guess. Just say so. Besides repreating that the Sioux tribes have asked for the change, the only thing you've done is insult people who disagree with you on the board. How about instead of repeating what others say and insulting those who disagree with you, you tell us what you think on the nickname and what your reasoning is? Would that really be so hard? -
Nice to see that you are pretty much calling any Native American who disagree with you Uncle Tom. Real nice.
-
I believe that is why he suggests sending SI to the schools, to create intrest.

I think a problem comes when you start saying there are all these differences between group A and group B. Group A is different and should be listened to more because of A, B and C that happened to them. These things never happened to group B, so group B just doesn't understand. If you aren't group A or agree with group A, you'll never understand. Comparing and counting the injustices that different groups recieved in the past and then using that to justify why one group should be listened to more than another, doesn't really solve anything. Every group has been persecuted at some point in time, listing and comparing these persecutions doesn't solve anything.

Does this mean you don't practice Indian Ways?
-
Why aren't you proud of UND using the Sioux name? You are proud to use it to refer to yourself, but not proud when UND uses it to refer to themselves. Why not? Because UND are not Native Americans? I'm not asking for part of this argument, I'm honestly curious. You've probably said it before and I missed it or forgotten.

I think he can leave at any time. Didn't Paul Kariya leave Maine around Christmas during his sophomre season?

Not even sure if that is true. "My position is if the Seminoles in Florida decide it's OK with them, I have no problems with it," said Kelly Haney, a former Oklahoma state senator who will become the principal chief of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma in September. Current chief Ken Chambers said FSU's nickname "gives the type of recognition that allows people to identify with the name Seminoles." He said he did not find it "degrading" or "humiliating." That's not the impression the average person might get from the NCAA's releases, or media accounts of the nickname controversy. An example from a Texas newspaper: "The Oklahoma Seminoles don't like it. The Florida Seminoles do. 'It's just unfortunate they don't have the understanding they should have,' said David Narcomey, who this month steered a resolution through the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma General Council opposing the use of such symbols." In interviews this week, Narcomey called the NCAA move "a major first major step" and "an outstanding decision to help eliminate this last bastion of racism in America today." But Chambers pointed out the resolution Narcomey sponsored failed by a large majority in the tribe's governing council. A call to the council's secretary confirmed the vote was 18-2 against, with three members not present, on a resolution to condemn the use of American Indian images and names in sports and other events. The vote failed even after Narcomey agreed to remove specific references to Florida State and the Seminoles.

I would just like to point out that I've never gotten my tongue stuck to a ski lift.
