2025-26 University of North Dakota Hockey Season
Fratt Mattin replied to Frozen4sioux's topic in Men's Hockey
Looks about right -
If the rumors about Carels being a near lock to commit are true, then we could have a real logjam at LD. That would be Laurila, Strathmann, Jubenvill, MacKenzie, and Carels all vying for time there. Even if Jubenvill transfers, I wonder if we see Laurila play his offside. I know he did that a lot in Fargo
-
I think Wiebe is probably the most likely departure, followed by Livanavage. Verhoeff will depend a lot on who drafts him and how pro ready he looks in the second half. Right now he looks like he needs another year, but that could change fast. I imagine Emery will play one more year to keep rounding out his offensive game, but you never know. Jubenvill is probably gone to the portal unless he starts seeing more playing time. Let's just assume Wiebe and Livanavage go pro and Jubenvill hits the portal. Then your d-core for next year looks like this right now: Laurila-Verhoeff MacKenzie-Emery Strathmann-Lindberg Extras: Engel, ?, ? If they added two of the names mentioned above, it would be a very talented group, but also a pretty young and inexperienced one. I wonder if they would look at adding only one more freshman recruit and then getting a vet out of the portal to balance things out.

I think back to Sanderson and how he looked good, but not great until the last few months of his freshman year. When you remember that Verhoeff is a full year younger than Sanderson was, I think it really puts into perspective how well he is doing with the adjustment to college -

One thing that I think a lot of evaluators are underrating with Verhoeff is his age. He's not just a 17 year old freshman, but an extremely young one at that. I know he hasn't made a ton of eye popping plays, but he also has made very few errors in my opinion. I think the fact that he has been able to play well in top 4 minutes, in college hockey's toughest conference, against guys who are up to 7 years older than him, says a lot. Playing defense is about a lot more than racking up points and I've been impressed by his body of work so far -
Agreed on Preston. He needs to be a top priority for the staff.

That is an elite list of names. Wow

I don't know a lot about analytics, but I think this actually means they are #2 in goals above expected. That can mean two things, either you have elite finishing talent on your team, you're getting a lot of puck luck, or a little bit of both. This likely means they're due for a bit of regression in terms of actual goals scored -
I haven't watched Simpson much myself, but from what people say it sounds like he is not very well suited for a bottom 6 role. Maybe they thought they had enough scoring without him and needed more role players. Still surprised they wouldn't take him over some others in a scoring role though

I like Jubenvill. He doesn't make a lot of big plays, but he also doesn't make many mistakes. I think that's the kind of presence we need on the backend right now. 4, 18, and 25 already provide plenty of playmaking

Minnesota @ UND - Saturday night game thread

The power play was incredibly bad. Can’t expect to win a game like that if you don’t cash in on at least one of those -
I don't get this decision. Why end something that generates a ton of buzz for your program on social media and excitement among your fans?
-
That one really stings
-
Calgary kid and a righty. Have to think we were after him
-
Need some kind of news today. Don’t care if it’s for this year or the future, just want something
-
I’m going to guess Brock England
-
Is this a hunch or some insider info?? I need to know how high to get my hopes up
-
Yep, I don’t expect many immediate commits and, of those that do happen, I think very few will be high-end recruits committing to blue chip programs

I hope so. I’ve never been a fan of that font on the ice or really in any other usage -

I’m hoping this is what they are. I like that design. It’d no doubt be an improvement over what we have right now -
Really need a right wing for the top 6. Not sure who is left out there that fits that description. Gordon wasn’t necessarily exciting, but at least he could’ve filled that role.
-
I thought so too, but Schlossman seemed to indicate otherwise. Maybe I misunderstood
-
If we were never in on Martone it really makes me wonder who we’re targeting and why it’s taking so long
-
Any know if we should be expecting news today? Seems awfully late in the process to not have at least one of these spots filled
