Shouldn't this be for almost any program a minor issue? Look at UND's athletic budget. For 250K more per year, you could be at the top of the league for salaries. Call it 500K and all of a suddenly you're at the top for all sports. I do think Chaves has done a lot of really good things. Facilities are top notch (once Phase II is completed). Weird that what appears to be the easiest thing to accomplish $ wise, is the only thing that's lacking from this Athletic department.

Grand Forks needs their own media presence. Herald needs to separate from Forum Communications. Having everything go through Fargo is not a good thing for Grand Forks and UND. Losing WDAZ has been damaging, no question.

My opinion is it's an effort situation. Forum, more resources, not spread as thin as the Herald, would be an argument, but still. Schlossman is a content machine. Men's hockey gets the best coverage for the sport in the country. What's stopping the Herald from hyping non-hockey UND sports? How about a 5-minute Vlog after the game last night. That's what disappointing. The Forum / WDAY has people like Izzo that really try and pump out content for Football / Basketball. Herald does not have that.

You are correct...he was a monster for VCSU and a great all-around athlete in high school.

Thing is...he's a 230-ish lb NAIA defensive end.  Ben McNaboe was undersized, and Gerhardt is 15-20 lbs smaller.  If he's going to play OLB that could be an option as a pass rusher but color me skeptical.  The North Star Athletic Association to the MVFC is a massive jump.  I hope he surprises but I'm not expecting much...

His position was listed as LB on the signing day graphic. Based on last season's performance, the bar is incredibly low for a pass rushing OLB. He can't be worse than what we witnessed all year.

  4. Pre-Landry leaving, I would have been confident that we wouldn't see have seen any April portal entries outside of those buried on the depth chart. Now, I would be surprised if we don't. This is really bad. Completely embarrassing, no way you spin it.

  5. I don't blame any coach for jumping ship. Chaves is the most culpable for the current situation, no doubt, honestly, until Freund left, I would argue it was 100% his doing. Once things started to go side-ways, Bubba deserves as much criticism as Chaves. Bubba being the head coach is the issue. What a sad way for Bubba to go out.

  6. Fired up for this series. Parroting a bit what @stoneySIOUX said, but you're looking at this series two types of ways. Pairwise / Standings. Usually, I'd say the Pairwise heavily outweighs the conference, but looking at the standings, there's some extra importance to finish 1st. At the same time, finishing 1st or 2nd in the pairwise, given where some of the auto bids are at, seems pretty important as well. 6 points here and next thing you know you're in the home stretch after the bye week.

Agree, losing Freund hurt, but after Jake was hired was actually feeling pretty pumped about the offense next year....and new mentality.

This is a huge mind F for players and mental roller coaster. Not good.

Completely. Ask me in two weeks, but this feels different. Can’t come back. Either Bubba retires or he’s officially chosen to burn it on the way out. What a sad way to go.

Roehl leaving NDSU for Tennessee State is interesting. Wonder how all the players that rallied behind him to be head coach feel..

I'd be interested in that too. Giving the timing, you'd think it's going to be a complete non-issue with the players. Would have been interesting if it happened the week after their season ended, that would have been a different story.

  9. If you took a poll right now, Bubba's approval rating would not be good. Would the majority of season ticket holders / fans want a change at head coach? Yes. I'm curious when things really shifted. You could feel it picking up steam the last couple years, but now it feels like a complete landslide.

  10. Face off numbers for the year. I just used those that I remember being listed as a Center on the line charts.

    • 14 - 58.45%
    • 27 - 56.25%
    • 22 - 47.62%
    • 8 - 45.22%
    • 21 - 45.16%
    • 11 - 35.06%

Highlighting 8's numbers. I'm looking for any reason why he continues to stay as 3C. FO % would not be it. I'll keep looking.

I've got some ideas but not 100% sure.  AJS has one of the names I had on my radar.

Butsch is one of them via his Instagram.

Next name is a guess but could see Riley Gerhardt.

Seems like such an obvious combo. Too simplistic of a take ( @burd ), but I cannot figure out ( & @Oxbow6 is right on) why Berry refuses to put Schmaltz as the 4th line C. For those saying it’s his Face Off %. I believe he has the lowest of the 4 that were Centers last night.

  13. Just noticed that Youngstown is bringing in 14 new transfers mid-semester. I followed this pretty closely this off-season, up to this point, it's been a disaster for UND. It's worth noting. If the defense is not fixed next year (3rd year in a row), through youth / development / portal, it's 100% on the Coaching staff. It's so frustrating watching programs you hope are peer programs (NDSU / SDSU / Montana) all riding this incredible momentum. On the flip side, it feels like this program is about to fall off a cliff. Everyone is seeing it coming, but my perception is this coaching staff cannot fix this. Over their heads.

Let it play out, but if it plays out how it seems it will, it won't be a surprise.

There's also something to be said about the level of play and experience. Hobie has three career starts against Alaska and Omaha. Persson has obviously seen more of NCHC play, against all teams in all situations. I'm not against a split and giving Hobie the shot, but I'm not close to saying Persson isn't our No. 1.

I’m not either or that Persson ultimately isn’t the better goalie. I used the word earned very deliberately. Trying to get better about not getting too far into the weeds w/ situations like this. I think it’s worth noting though.

Persson still #1 goalie according to Berry...they wanted to give him a rest after his lingering illness last weekend.
I'd expect we see Persson again on Friday night.

I know this will be unpopular, but again I’ll ask, does performance matter ultimately under Berry? How you handle goalies is no doubt delicate, but based on Hedquists performance the last two games, you would have thought he’d earn the net next Friday.

  16. Maybe it’s time for a little more of a knee jerk reaction from the coaching staff. After analyzing the game, reward those that played well. Keep shaking things up. It’s been a common theme for years, there does seem to be a real lack of accountability for certain players.

James / Schmaltz. It took (imo) way too long for one to be “promoted” and the other to be “demoted”.

We all want the same thing here. Great news is they are in a fine spot overall. Lets get this thing headed the right direction, starting tonight!
