I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but Bubs is absolutely NOT on the hot seat. Whether you, me, or the next guy think he should be, he is absolutely not on the hot seat.

Some not familiar w/ UND Athletics? I like the whether you think he should be or not, Berry will never be on the hot seat.

Did they release a post Spring ball depth chart?

Under the assumptions of Croal and no Blake, that's 13 F. Still need 2.
Ideally for me, you get two very different types of players. One being a true depth guy, the other being as high-end as you can get. Neither being a SR. Ideally, the depth guy would be a SO, the high-end either a SO or JR. Why I emphasis true depth guy. Someone that will not be taking minutes from a more talented (high upside) FR. That gives you two (14F / 15F) depth forwards. Let the other 13 battle it out.

Assume Blake gone, and I'm not 100% sold on both Croal and Littler coming ... I see 12 for sure forwards:
Jamernik, Berg, Kunz, Schmaltz, Wilkie
McLaughlin, James, Strinden, Montgomery
Perron
Swanson, BoisvertLikely options? Yes, Croal, Littler.
Nicety? Someone of Perron's class to flatten the rotationBut I see needing three forwards.
Croal is a for sure forward.

Anyone want to try to spin this as not a big deal?
Both players went to the school they were initially tied to. Disappointing still, but not surprising.

It's put up or shut up time. Too bad there is no way for SiouxSports to be able to verify participation in the NIL so a badge/icon could be added to our profile. Would lend some credibility to discussions.
Would love this, but would also take people @ their word. I re-signed up for a membership yesterday.

You consider Michigan’s 2nd goal a bad bounce? Maybe on a technicality, but only happened because Persson made the single worst goaltending decision I saw all year.
Whatever the issue is come tournament time, I’ll be (potentially in the minority) that UND winning just one game since 2017 isn’t based on bad luck.

Projection based on current info:
Defense (8):
JR - Zmolek
SO - Livanavage, Wiebe, Komzak, MacDonald
FR - Jubenvill, Strathmann, Emery
Goalie (3):
SR - Semptimphelter
JR - Johnson
SO - HedquistBenoit enters portal...wouldn't be surprised if another Dman enters as well.
So still room for another RHD to come in via portal, maybe a JR/SR to balance the classes a little.Lock this in. Do not add a 9th for next year.

But, hey, looks like we landed a defender.
Looks like a great addition, but not the direction I thought they were going (which was RHD, one year remaining).
Next year.
- 1 JR
- 5 SO
- 3 FR

It may be a net good thing.
That's gone.
What's next.
I'm looking not only at next year, but also the following. If things stayed status quo defensively, you have 1 Junior, 4 Sophomores, 3 Freshman next year. I know I'm getting ahead of myself a bit, but who would be ready to leave early after next year? I wouldn't expect anyone. Where would Laurila fit the following year? McInnis?
I still feel you need to break up the underclassman log jam. For the portal, get the highest skilled RHD with one year left (or likely to turn pro after next year).

Perron will progress.
Schmaltz can't have back-to-back stinker years, can he?
Boisvert and Swanson are ready to step in.And Bubs pulled a couple rabbits out of his hat last year about this time.
I'm sort of serious when I say, the coaches realizing what Schmaltz is and pulling him from the PP and making him 4C might be the most important off-season move that can happen.

I would look to Perron to take a big jump from FR / SO year.
Disappointing news about Blake, I was convinced he would be back. Kind of shocked actually.

What's going on at Scheels? I might be in that area needing a break later.
EDIT: Found it -- https://nationals.usahockey.com/2024youthtieri15oDid we decide who TJ Hale's parents are (Ryan and Katie or David)?

I didn't see many games last year, so I don't know much about the team, but why are you down on Benoit? He rarely saw any action last year, so it seems like you're not giving him a fair chance to prove his mettle. It may have been you or someone else, but a ss.com poster said to trust our recruits & develop them, which I tend to agree with; at least give them a fair chance to prove themselves before letting them go.
That was me, but there’s always exceptions. Nothing against Benoit, but I’d like to see the classes represented to be a bit more spread out. As of now, it would be 1 Junior, 4 So, 3 Fr. Also, there would be 3 that either are inexperienced or not super high-end. I think it would be really beneficial to go that route.
-
I wrote this in the upcoming season thread. If you look at the projected defensive lineup, what would be most beneficial would be Benoit (Out) and a high-end RHD (in).
4 LHD / 4 RHD
6 no-doubt starters, Jubenville as 7th and Komzak as 8th.
Pohlkamp would be the #1 ranked guy nationally if he entered. Game-changer. Let’s pump up the 1883 collective.

3 minutes ago, Benny Baker said:Cam Johnson was wildly inconsistent. I was always nervous which Cam would show up to games. The year he backstopped UND to a national championship included the following performances, for example:
pulled at Bemidji after 2 goals on 8 shots;
pulled at St Cloud after 3 goals on 13 shots;
4 goals on 23 shots against Omaha;
pulled against CC after 3 goals on 11 shots;
8 goals on 54 shots during a weekend at Denver;
pulled against Western after 3 goals on 4 shots;
4 goals on 26 shots against Duluth.
He had a helluva national championship game though to go along with that 4-game shutout streak against Denver, Duluth, and Huntsville. He also shut out Western Michigan 35 days before that performance where he allowed 3 goals on 4 shots against that same Western Michigan team.
His SV % that year was .935. Maybe it’s just a feeling. I felt they could win it all with him. I felt the same with Scheel. I don’t believe Persson could.

If both he and Blake come back, then we're set.
We saw this year that Persson has talent...like you said, he had his moments. Keep that rolling for a year and see what the team can do.You cannot win a title with Persson. He’s way too inconsistent. Sometimes you might just be your numbers.

The Omaha weekend told me all I needed to know about the leadership of this team. They were never winning a tournament game.

I get what you're saying, but I want F14 and F15 to be pushing to be F11 and F12, not just happy to be in the room.
Ideally, F15, F14 still are. They’ll get their shot when injuries impact the roster.
Just to be clear, I’m not a fan of it. What I feel though is this is the reality of the situation in 2024. Adapt or you’ll have guys that regardless if we think it’s right or not are not happy with their situation, which will poison the room.
Addition: For Berry, trust your recruiting, trust your roster construction. Fr. will have a learning curve, but stick with them. Come March, here’s to a team playing its best hockey.

Would you give up Cam Berg to find what could've been with Emerson.
No, but I absolutely wouldn’t have brought back 13 for a 5th year. I also would not have played 11 in front of him.
Ultimately my point is this. Play talent & develop talent. Construct your roster so that there are spots for guys like Montgomery X2 when looking at the F group. Two F’s that will only play in case of injuries. Great teammates, but have their role.

I wouldn’t be opposed if we got a portal forward that could win faceoffs for us, since I think that area could use some improvement, but there’s probably not a ton of room up front to add one.
I would hope they wouldn’t. The question I would pose is what Fr. would not develop because of the addition. What if Emerson got the minutes Ness / Albrecht got this year. Come March, what kind of impact could he have had? We’ll never know.

All projections here from current roster with remaining eligibility.
Goalies: Hedquist and Kaleb stay, Ludvig goes. (2 on roster)
Defense: Zmolek, Livanavage, Weibe, Benoit all stay, Komzak leaves. (4 on roster)
Forwards: Schmaltz, Berg, Perron, Strinden, Omac, Jammer, James, Kunz all stay. (8 on roster)
Montgomery, Blake, Ness, Gaber, all gone. If they can tell Dan Senkbeil that he should find a new place they can tell Montgomery. Grand Forks kid, that's great, but he's an undersized grind line guy, and like @The Sicatoka said, we need to get bigger.
Now I need @brianvf to tell us who is coming in recruit wise.
Love all the projections, outside of Montgomery. In this age of college hockey, you need guys like him who know they are the 15F (or 8th D, 3rd G). I want him to return as 15F. I would make an argument that you actually need two these days (14th & 15th). Stack your Top 13. Play & develop them.
Edit: Hope that Komzak is the D’s #8 guy & Benoit portals. Replace Benoit with a high-end RH veteran Dman w/ one year left.
-
My ideal offseason.
• With the exception of Jamernik, all other Gr. / 5th / SRs move on.
• One of the FR D-man (Benoit / Komzak) Portal out. Think they need a better mix between classes
• All others return (no pro contracts)
• Add portal goalie. Want a true goalie competition next fall with Hedquist.
• Add Portal D-man. High-end RH shot. Gr / Sr.

Unfortunate for us, but it’s been proven with this AD & administration that performance doesn’t matter. All we can do is hope for the best.
