University of Jamestown applied for D2 status. Hockey will remain with the ACHA

FARGO — The University of Jamestown has applied for membership to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, athletic director Austin Hieb confirmed Tuesday, Aug. 22.

The North Dakota school — a four-year private university — recently made a presentation to the NSIC, according to multiple sources.

“We are exploring the opportunity, and in order to fully explore the opportunity, we needed to submit an application," Hieb said. "We are still evaluating everything. We think we owe it to our students and to our student-athletes to explore possible options in the geographical footprint of the NSIC.”

The Jimmies are an NAIA program that competes in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. Hieb has familiarity with the NSIC, working in athletic administration at Northern State prior to the University of Jamestown.

D1 or D2 in ACHA? What is the current pecking order in club hockey in the state?

  2. Why bother, at the current rate they'll be lucky to exist by 2030. Their enrollment went off a cliff and the looming demographic bomb hasn't even gone off yet. Mark my words, SCSU will be the first D1 hockey program dropped not by their athletic department, but due to the school shutting down.

  3. Based on Laurila and Lindberg not mentioning Harvard in their stories by Brad it seemed like O'Neill was the Fargo/Moorhead kid they were after. With all their commits over the past few days the window for whoever it was may have closed though. Glad to see us get a local NTDP kid.

They already use the practice facility and looks like they get a decent crowd at their games.

Climate Pledge Arena is also used by Seattle University men's basketball. So, Washington could play there.

From what I can find Seattle doesn't have a club team anymore, but it would be a nice club rivalry between Washington and Seattle.

Seattle also has put in to host the 2026 WJC along with Vegas, Tampa, and St Louis.

Vegas having the Frozen Four that year may preclude them from getting WJC.

Washington has a few new growing pains to figure out before biting on a puck.

For sure. They have some debt to square away. But the major airport in Phoenix was an under-acknowledged in ASU's feasibility.

  6. Washington has free reign on one of the world's premier hockey cities just over the border, a major airport in town, and can use the Kraken practice facility that's a few miles from campus while they figure out the arena situation.

Will B1G take more PAC schools than just USC/UCLA? Likely.
Will they be getting full B1G shares at first? Likely not.
Will they get more than if stayed in PAC? Likely.

But much of the difference will be eaten up in travel costs.

It'll be interesting to see what % of the annual 70 million they offer.

  8. Big Ten should make adding a hockey team (with lacrosse or field hockey as the title IX match) a condition of joining the conference. If they are going to give money to the new schools, tell them how to spend it.

This is in reference to the report of Big Ten meeting to discuss the addition of some Pac X schools.

7-2 Czech beat up on the US.
Swanson with one assist in the loss.  He was also named an alternate captain for the tourney.

Only watched the first period; he had a bad clear on the PK that gave CZ a 5 on 3. But the coaches were leaning on him and he showed speed and vision.

Pohlkamp is going to be a miss…Bemidji? I honestly think he’s going to regret that one. He sure is looking really good. He really needs to play for a bigger school. I’m guessing he’s a great kid that holds to his initial commitment. That’s awesome…but man, he’s too good for BSU. There I said it.

    Portal bait

Dang, that VT Twitter account must feel sheepish. ;)
I thought a player couldn’t enter the transfer portal after a certain date?

Timing would work out for a MN commitment for sure, Motzko I’m guessing would be feeling a bit stressed after the late Cooley signing and needing to add some skill (and numbers) up front.

Coaching change and scholarship reduction are the reasons allowed outside the normal window.
