Sioux Illustrated Site Hack

Goon

Recommended Posts

Not hacked, just bought. UND apparently just didn't renew the domain name when they quit putting it online and someone else bought the name.

It's reasonably common to buy expiring domain names and fill them with ads, on the theory that they'll still be getting some traffic and may have resale value.

Jim would this be considered a spoof?

Nah, they're not pretending to be siouxillustrated.com; siouxillustrated.com abandoned the URL so someone else bought it and is delivering different content to anyone who still has that URL bookmarked, memorized, or linked. The original site no longer exists (though Sioux Illustrated will reappear online with the new fightingsioux.com website), so these people are directing ads at people who are still trying to visit the defunct site.

As cheap as domain names are these days (I think <$10/year), it's a fairly common business tactic to snatch up expiring domains on the assumption that expiring names are names that someone else previously deemed to have value.

Thanks that makes sense.
