star2city Posted November 22, 2003 Posted November 22, 2003 With the playoffs starting in just hours, it's interesting to review the Massey college football ratings, which had been discussed earlier this year on this board. Of the playoff teams, the ratings for North Alabama, Grand Valley, Saginaw Valley, and Valdosta State are head and shoulders above the rest of Div II. North Alabama's ratings make it competitive with Colorado and UCLA. S. Ark, Tx-AM-Kingsville, UND, and Winona State seem to form the second group, who would be competitive with Div IA's Baylor, Illinois, Indiana, and Temple, according to the power ratings. Pitt St., Tarleton, Edinboro, and Mesa St. form a third tier in the playoffs. The Massey ratings indicate Emporia, C. Oklahoma, Carson-Newman, and Bentley will not be competitive in the playoffs. Here's the top 20 in Div II: DII Overall Rank Rank School Record PowerRating 1 62 N Alabama 11 0 1.524 2 68 Saginaw Val 11 0 1.474 3 78 Grand Valley St 10 1 1.421 4 89 Valdosta St 10 1 1.315 5 105 N Colorado 8 2 1.196 6 119 N Dakota St 8 3 1.101 7 123 TX A&M K'ville 9 1 1.056 8 124 S Arkansas 9 2 1.053 9 125 North Dakota 9 1 1.052 10 126 UC Davis 6 3 1.039 11 140 Delta St 9 2 0.943 12 141 Winona St 10 1 0.922 13 146 NE Omaha 8 3 0.886 14 153 Mesa St 10 1 0.823 15 156 S Dakota St 7 4 0.815 16 157 St Cloud 7 4 0.807 17 160 Pittsburg St 9 2 0.802 18 161 Edinboro 9 2 0.795 19 164 Tarleton St 8 3 0.777 20 172 Indiana PA 10 1 0.747 Quote
star2city Posted November 22, 2003 Author Posted November 22, 2003 The top DIAA team, Southern Illinois, just barely exceeds the rating for the top DII team, North Alabama. Massey's ratings show that that the top 10 in DII are approximately equal to the top 20 in DIAA. 1 61 S Illinois 10 1 1.53 2 67 Montana 9 2 1.484 3 74 N Iowa 9 2 1.433 4 80 N Arizona 8 3 1.384 5 85 Delaware 10 1 1.358 6 86 W Kentucky 8 3 1.341 7 88 McNeese St 9 1 1.331 8 90 W Illinois 8 3 1.314 9 95 Colgate 11 0 1.307 10 97 Massachusetts 9 2 1.303 11 99 Idaho St 7 4 1.26 12 101 Penn 9 0 1.235 13 103 Weber St 7 4 1.206 14 104 FL Atlantic 8 2 1.203 15 106 Wofford 10 1 1.179 16 110 E Washington 6 5 1.16 17 112 Cal Poly SLO 6 4 1.153 18 114 Montana St 6 5 1.15 19 116 Villanova 7 3 1.138 20 127 Maine 6 4 1.019 Quote
CoteauRinkRat Posted November 22, 2003 Posted November 22, 2003 I have a really tough time buying into the Massey Ratings. Quote
bisonguy Posted November 22, 2003 Posted November 22, 2003 6 119 N Dakota St 8 3 1.101 7 123 TX A&M K'ville 9 1 1.056 8 124 S Arkansas 9 2 1.053 9 125 North Dakota 9 1 1.052 Looks like NDSU should be in the playoffs according to Massey. UND competitive with Illinois? Illinois would win 42-3 if the game was called off at halftime. Quote
Verk62 Posted November 22, 2003 Posted November 22, 2003 Do you think the Bison would stack up better than the Sioux? Quote
jimdahl Posted November 22, 2003 Posted November 22, 2003 No, I just don't like the Massey. The real problem is that his ratings are very complex because his goal was to make a computer rating that could replace professional polls, which means the results have to be meaningful after just a couple games. That included things like adding a margin of victory; then realizing that margin of victory rewards running up the score (not necessarily a sign of a good team), so included an anti-run up the score measure; then realizing that some teams might never win by 20 (because of coaching style or other) but always win, so included Bayesian correction for that. The Massey rankings include so many corrections for individual "problems" with mathematical ratings that the complexity is too high to be able to agree that the results are "correct". Note that the Massey ratings people usually quote are NOT the Massey ratings used in the BCS calculation -- those simply analyze record/strength of schedule. Quote
