gfbugman
Bulgaria gives up 139 shots on goal in 82-0 women's hockey loss ESPN.com news services Updated: September 9, 2008, 9:06 AM ET Comment Email Print There's the "agony of defeat." And then there's this women's ice hockey score from the European Olympic pre-qualifying tournament: Slovakia 82, Bulgaria 0. That's correct: eighty-two goals for Slovakia, none for Bulgaria. The International Ice Hockey Federation said the result, from a game played Saturday at the tournament in Liepaja, Latvia, set a record score for a women's IIHF-sanctioned event. It was not the all-time record for futility, however; that is still held by Thailand, which lost 92-0 to South Korea in the 1998 Asia-Oceania U18 Championship. Slovakia, which won all four of its games at the tournament, outshot Bulgaria 139-0, scoring on 58.9 percent of their shots on goal. They averaged one goal every 44 seconds. Bulgaria trailed 7-0 after 5 minutes, 19-0 after 10 and 31-0 at the end of the first period. The drubbing capped a woeful showing for the Bulgarian women, who also lost 30-1 to Croatia and 41-0 to Italy in earlier games.

Ah, but I bet they celebrated like no other teams for that one goal!

Siouxman
Didn't know Frazee grew his hair out and was playing for Bulgaria. Did the puck have to bounce on the ice before it went in the net to count as a goal?
Sioux-cia
Did the puck have to bounce on the ice before it went in the net to count as a goal? Given that the winning score is in double digits they must have used a basket ball instead of a puck. So the answer to your question is yes. *poor Bulgaria *

The Sicatoka
What ever happened to the "Gentlemen's Rule*": Win by 10 and be done with it (and if you run it up more expect someone to run it up on you at next opportunity). * First one to point out it's womens hockey ... don't. redwing77
What ever happened to the "Gentlemen's Rule*": Win by 10 and be done with it (and if you run it up more expect someone to run it up on you at next opportunity). * First one to point out it's womens hockey ... don't. It's a relief that it is women's hockey. Otherwise, people would actually know about it. Seriously, though, I could not agree more. I can't believe they even came out to play the second period. What did the Bulgarian coach say between periods? "Let's go out there ladies and... go out there!" In the third period, I'd try to bend the rules. I'd put out two defensewomen, two forwards, and try to put both starting and backup goaltenders out there. Hey, could you imagine if it was Team USA 82 Bulgaria 0? We'd have people crying up and down the sporting world saying how vicious we are for running up the score!
hockey10
My guess would be at some point the qualifying tie breaker comes down to most points scored, maybe not though.
Reformed Gphr Fan
That's just mean. At least the goalie(s) had 57 saves. Did Bulgaria understand that they were also supposed to shoot at the other team's net?
