UND in the 1940's

During World War II, enrollment dropped drastically, down to only 775 students, mostly women. The campus became a virtual military camp, with thousands of military men and women training here. But by the fall of 1946, after the war, a new problem arose -- too many students. Returning veterans swelled enrollment to more than 3,000 students. The ex-soldiers, identifiable by articles of military clothing, had wives and children, something unknown in previous years. Classrooms were crowded, and housing was so difficult to find that even converted coal bins were highly sought. Tin huts, surplus remnants from the war, were quickly constructed to accommodate them. The student body changed forever after the war. Students were different -- they were older, veterans, married, and serious.

Fighting Sioux have size; BC has momentum - ESPN

North Dakota's Philippe Lamoureux likes to play with a chip on his shoulder. He'll use the showdown with first-round NHL draft pick Schneider as motivation. Lamoureux, a Grand Forks native, is a small, scrappy battler, and he's not afraid to roam from the crease in order to play the puck. Since Christmas, the Grand Forks native is 17-3-4 with a 2.13 GAA and a .924 save percentage.

University life was pretty cheap in the 1880's; the only fee was $3.50 per week for board in the Old Main building, which lacked a furnace and storm windows. Drinking water was hauled from town in barrels, and the University emptied its sewage into the coulee. A few enterprising students built shanties near the campus so they would have a place to live.
