  1. I actually like our chances against Minnesota, besides Minnesota is due some bad play/breaks. I think both teams are pretty even and our goaltending is better, I will take a Parise over a Briggs anyday. Parise > Briggs. Or a Parise > Frazee. Our defense is just as mobile and probably better defensively, UofMN doesn't have a player with Smaby physicality (Physical ability). Now I know UofMN fans are going to say we shut out Union and only allowed 3 goals against Niagra, please before you start you feasted on a weaker opponent, UND is going to bring it and they are going to be fired up.

According to the Krach on this site AA is weaker than Niagara. :0 Briggs was good enough to sweep in GF, he should be good enough to potentially sweep at home. While I would agree that the talent level of these two teams is even, the Gophers are playing better than the Sioux right now. I also see the inexperience on D hurting the Sioux as it did last month. So for this series I think the Gophers will take at least three points, with Ryan and Danny doing most of the damage. :D Regardless, it should be great hockey.

  2. Yikes 5-3 was the final score?

A sound thrashing was what we got. Maybe tonight's game we can come to the ice with a sound wake up call so we can put more goals behind Lawson than behind Phil. I mean, let's face it, I like Phil and all, but if he plays like that (and the defense plays like that as well) against Minny next week? Wow. The Gopher fans are going to be all over this site trolling simply because it will be the easiest reg. season sweep the Gophers have had for a long time.

Shore up the D, shore up the O, shore up tonight's game. Period.

I don't think Gopher fans take anything for granted when we play the Sioux. For the most part the Sioux have had our number the last few years. Don't worry, your team will wake up. If they don't put it together tonight a series at Mariucci (with a Gopher sweep from last month still fresh in their minds) might be just what they need to fire them up. If the Sioux don't get at least three of the next six points I would be concerned. Then again, it's only January.

  3. This game points out how valuable Oshie and Toews are as energy guys. I'm sure the Sioux will come out tonight with more effort, their ears may still be ringing. Thankfully it's only December, and while this loss hurts it's not a deathblow. Last year the Sioux didn't really ramp up until late, this year feels earily similar. Please beat Harvard tonight, please.

  4. I think Dubay has kidnapped Goon and stolen his identity. Goon has to be tied up in a closet somewhere with duct tape over his mouth. ;)

I think he was kidnapped and Kahn implanted one of those porcupine(sp) mind-controlling babies through his ear. I knew Kahn was a gopher fan. Watched Wrath of Khan the other day, couldn't resist. Next thing you know Goon will be spelling out M-I-N-N-E-S-O-T-A. KHAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Since this has digressed into our favorite Sioux/Gopher moments my top 2 are:

    1. Neal Broten's acrobatic game-winner (I believe, 12 yrs. old at the time) in the 1979 Championship game where he speeds up the left side, plays the puck around a pilon (sioux defender) and flips it over a diving goaltender (who inexplicably came out of the net) while getting cross-checked from behind. What that Iwabuchi (probably butchering the name)?

    2. Keith Ballard ripping the jersey over the head of some Sioux player (I'm sure some of you know who) in his defensive zone(should have been called a penalty), joining the play and scoring the game-winner in overtime to knock the Sioux out of the playoffs. As I recall, the Sioux were having a down year.

I could be wrong on the details of these memories, but they are perfect in my mind as I remember them. ;)

  6. Those two will have a sunburn from the red lights going on by saturday evening. I just beg some goofer fan to come on here talking about how grea Briggs is and that we are going to get crushed this weekend.

happy, skippy, slappy. Anyone? Let me just be on record that the Goofers don't scare me one bit. Sure, I will give kudos to Phil Kessel but he is one player and UND has must as many skilled playes as they do.

Besides I like our defense better than theirs.

I won't say Briggs is great, but I do think he is a competent goalie who got hung out to dry by his defense Friday night. Two 2-on 1's and two breakaway's. While I don't think UND will get crushed, this weekends games will be highly competitive. Probably a split and great to watch. Didn't UND get swept at home against Bucky earlier this year? ;) I believe with a combined score of 8-3. Hmmm....sounds familiar.

  7. This weekend helped confirm what we all suspected that Bucky is the team to beat. Each WCHA team that has won the NCAA the past several years has had a solid D that plays mistake free hockey and keeps them in a close game. At the moment they are that team. Also, even though I place him in the typical Eaves dirty player category, Burrish is an incredible shot blocker. Our young players will have to develop their games quickly if we hope to challenge them at the end of the season.

Last year at this time it was the Gophers that were playing solid hockey (including the D) and were #1 until around Jan 1st. A year ago the Sioux looked terrible and some on this board were calling for Hakstol's head. We all remember how that turned out. Denver had a mediocre start last year and they ended up pretty good.

I would agree with your assessment that Bucky is the team to beat for now, but that can change in a hurry. Both the Gophers and UND are very young and very talented. By the end of the year they both will be tough outs in any tournament. Personally, I can't trust Bucky until they start winning in the post-season. That said, it's early and I think Bucky gets at least a split at Mecca next weekend. I hope I'm wrong.

  8. Also, I'd like to add that, even though it's the Gophers and Wisconsin and it hurts a bit to say it, I'd like to congratulate the WCHA for taking it to the "number one" team in the country.

I hope the Gophers can continue it next weekend! ???

  9. This was a joke playing at the "He chose UND so he went up 3 rounds in talent" junk. I've read nothing to suggest that Kessel won't go #1.

And thanks dagies et. al. If Forney is defensively lacking as the scouts suggest I don't care how good he is offensively. I'd like him to work on his defensive play VERY VERY hard. If that means working on it in the USHL a year, so be it. If Hak decides to bring him in early, then I'd expect Hak to coach him hard on defensive responsibility and to sit him if he should ever forget about it. Yeah, I'm going to drive Gopher fans nuts when I say this but: Rochester American's head coach noticed early in the season that Vanek was a defensive liability and prone to cherry pick while the rest of his team were playing defense in their own zone. That head coach sat Vanek's butt down for a game or two (or at the very least Vanek didn't get much ice time) and ran him hard in practice. The result? Vanek isn't a 2 way forward, but he's better at it now than he was and it still didn't hurt the results of his season in the AHL (I believe he lead all rookies in either goals). I don't know how Lucia coaches and whether he could have done the same thing for Vanek, but I know historically Blais and Hakstol have never been afraid of sitting a liability. I hope Forney's draft status and hype (what hype there is) don't get in the way of that tendency.

o.k. I'm convinced now. Equally it is.

  10. I don't know if UND is rated too high or not, this weekend may indicate one way or another. Regardless, I wouldn't use the Gophers as a measuring stick, they are definantley ranked too high. I don't think they deserve to be in the top 10.

If UND fans want to rip the Gophers schedule (turnabout is fair play) you better get your digs in now. After this weekend 14 of the Gophers next 18 games are against UND, Wisco, CC, Denver, Michigan and Michigan State (who I here is pretty good this year) :silly: .

  11. Based on early season performance to date, perhaps you are putting the cart before the horse here Sagard. Maybe after some better efforts by the boys in the brown and yellow than those that have been displayed so far you can begin fantasizing about seeing the Gophers at The Ralph come end of March.

There have been huge flops by teams in sport ever since the dawn of sport. Unless Lucia starts having the boys working on some passing drills, and grinding in the corners, it could be a long long season and a really short post season for your boys.

Of course, it is way too early to speculate about most anything. Of course the majority of a Ralph crowd will cheer mightily against the Gophers. In my opinion, there is really little to nothing to like about them, their attitudes, or their program.

Uh, I thought this thread was about Wisconsin. I have had a general hatred of UW since they beat the Gophers in the Championship at the DECC in 81. The worst weekend of my life: the Gophers lose in the final as heavy favorites, my dad gives me "the sex talk"(I was in 7th grade), and a drunk Wisco fan pours his beer over my head at the buzzer.

I have been back to the DECC twice since then, both times my high school hockey team lost in the section final. I am going back this weekend to try to exorcise those demons, it might get ugly for the Gophs. Regardless, I have watched multiple times Wisconsin fans cheering against the Gophers in the final five and at NCAA tournaments. While I can cheer for any WCHA team, and I do (including the Sioux), I could never cheer for Wisconsin. So this weekend I say: GO SIOUX!

  12. I haven't heard it pronounced but would believe it to be Shevery. Just a guess

I thinking ahead of cheers that match his last name. Is there anything that rhymes with Shevery that means sieve? :D

Note to Goon: Briggs doesn't rhyme. :silly:

  13. I suggest our coaching staff knows that he will either be so great offensively that he will negate his defensive liabilities, or that they can actually teach him to be a factor in his own end. I'm not going to worry about it.

Hey, you gotta give Redwing credit for consistency, though.

It doesn't "bother" him when a Gopher recruit is defensively lacking, does it? :D

  14. I couldn't agree more. As much as I hate to say it (because I do think it gives the Gophers some competitive advantage), this is absolutely the best thing for the league.

It didn't help the Gophers too much last year. :silly: I think your opinions are right on.
