  1. Is this an official game against OSU for Wisconsin? If so, the WCHA really needs a victory by UW, otherwise we could see a lot of CCHA teams in the tourney.

This game does count toward pairwise. Selfishly I'm rooting for the Suckeye's.

  2. As Sagard said it is too easy to remember what happened last year vs. Tech to be too confident. Not to mention Tech has already knocked off two #1 teams this year (Wisco, Mich). Minnesota comes into Carnival weekend with the #1 ranking, Tech is 3-2-1 in their last three series, I think the Gophers could get trapped for a game or two. I also would be thrilled with a sweep, satisfied with three. On the positive the Mankato/Denver game starts just as the Gopher game ends, looks like a doubleheader for first place! Go Freaking Mavs!

  3. I'm from Madison, and dislike the Badgers, so maybe I'll be the only one to find this funny, but I just thought I would share it.

UW men's hockey: Badgers return to pack after latest loss

The insult for the Badgers and their followers came courtesy of Kessel, the Madison who a year ago picked Minnesota over his hometown school.

Jeered loudly both nights whenever he touched the puck, Kessel celebrated his first point of the season against UW by putting his left hand to ear and skating around the rink, all but inviting a final torrent of boos.

"It was just a reaction," said Kessel, an 18-year-old projected to be a top-five pick in the NHL draft later this year. "I was getting a little hassled the whole game."

Lucia cringed when asked about the gesture, but ultimately backed Kessel.

"With how much grief he took all weekend, I can understand it," Lucia said.

There was no such sentiment coming from the UW dressing room.

"Maybe put your hand there for a second, but to skate around the whole rink doing that? I'm going to question his character for doing something like that," Badgers captain and Madisonian Adam Burish said. "If this were a different league, maybe somebody would have taken it a different way and taken it into their own hands."

Since fighting is a no-no in U.S. college hockey, UW players left the Kohl Center this night feeling the pain of injury and insult.

    "It stings," Burish said.

Should be interesting to see if there is any retaliation should they play each other again in the tournament...

Quotes are coming from Burish who knocked out promising player Scott Thauwald (sp?) of CC for the season with 1 second left on a Saturday night earlier in Madison on a very questionable hit. ;) Guess we need to consider the source. As for the quote, bring it on Burish, bring it on.

  4. Talk about wearing Maroon and Gold glasses. I would be willing to bet the Gophers have a good chance of getting swept this weekend.

Considering UW swept them at home last month that's not much of a statement. However, Bucky did focus on defense last weekend. Their lack of confidence in Connelly was apparent, if undeserved. This weekend will be very tellling. I think Wisconsin will be better, but that still gives the Gophers a chance to get SOME points. I wouldn't have been so optimistic a week ago.

  5. http://siouxsports.com/hockey/whatif/index.php

Now that there is only one weekend left in January, we can start to evaluate how we see the WCHA race finishing.

    My final league standings:

    Wisco 43

    Minny 40

    Denver 38

    UND 34

    CC 33

Even with the Elliott injury (unless he is out for the season) I have the Badgers winning the league somewhat comfortably. I have the Gophers and Denver fighting for 2nd and 3rd, it could go either way. UND, CC, and St. Clown (32 pts.) jostle for the final two home ice spots. I like the Sioux's schedule enough to give them 4th. They can thank UMinn for jump-starting the second half of their season with it's Sat. night collapse. (ok that point is debateable, the Sioux earned the 2 pts.) CC is reeling but holds-off charging JBSU for 5th.

  6. I thought it was very interesting that the BADgers number one goalie goes down and they lose their next home game 1-0.

There's a couple ways to take that. A) Sconnie is a fundamentally sound team that had their confidence shaken when there was uncertainty (in their minds) between the pipes. B) Their offensive output this year has been a byproduct of a confidence that they could take chances with Elliot in net.

    OR...

    C) We are getting close to February/March and the BADgers feel the end is near. ???

Great post. We'll see tonight and next weekend how Wisco bounces back, if at all. I think losing Elliott may expose them so I will choose A, B, and C.

  7. Agreed.

Heh, there are teams in DI hockey that Wisconsin could beat even if they played the entire game with an extra attacker ;)

    RW77,

I know you are joking here but the theme of your post brings up a peeve of mine. I think Wisconsin is a fundamentally sound team. They are well coached, and are excellent defensively. They probably won't have anyone challenge them for 1st in the WCHA regardless of when Elliot returns. That being said (written), they have not proven anything in the post-season with Eaves at the helm. He has had other top 3 WCHA teams that have failed in the post-season. IMHO Minny, UND and CC are just as threatening in the tournament. Win something Bucky, then I will care.

For this weekend Eaves is dressing both of his backups against Denver, not exactly a vote-of-confidence for Connelly. Of course, Shane "five-hole" Connelly did give up five against the USA 18 team, pretty shaky. For the short-term having Elliot out gives both Denver and Minny a better chance to get points out of Madison which could really help both teams pairwise. :)

Finally, there may be a run paint-thinner in Madison if Connelly were to be injured while Elliot is out.

  8. I know that Mazzocco is a homer, but if you want to hear the worst play-by-play guy watch the CC-Bucky game. He's usually 10 seconds behind the play, is a huuuuge homer, and clearly never played the game with some of the questions he asks Suckissor.

  9. The original two minutes for elbowing was a good call. Goligoski than held onto him as much as Prpich was holding onto him. The punch in the head was a love tap, and his helmet never even touched the ice.

So we agree it should have been just the elbowing call.

  10. Did I mention my favorite moment from the WJC. The one move wonder tried his one move on the Canadian D and got sat on his butt several times ;););)

Watch it or I will break out my Ballard/Lundblom avatar. :D

  11. They give Prpich an extra two minutes on the call. Bunch of junk. Prpich did give a little extra shove, but it shouldn't have been an extra 2 minutes. 5 on 3 for the Gophers.

That was a good call. I don't know why Goli got a penalty. Prpich elbowed him, held his stick, held Goli's leg between his and punched his head into the ice. What a freaking hack! (But I'd take him on my team)

  12. Sagaard, I wasn't wrong giving you credit for being a knowledgeable fan now was I ;) . I would hope you would get past stats and put faith into a players performance on the ice. A good example, and one you may not like is Prpch. He does very little scoring, but his value on the PK, and being able to disrupt the opposition is priceless. As for the little digs about TJ not finishing in the WJC. Like I have said many times, your boy passed up shots he damn sure should have taken. So to that, I say, you don't have a chance to score if you don't shoot the puck. It's better to shoot and miss, then not shoot at all, I guess. Also, I don't think Coach Kyle's intentions for TJ were to lead the US in scoring, that spot was held for phil, and borque. I will agree that this will be a good hockey weekend, at least some decent compettion, for both teams. I wish I could be there, and if I was, I would damn sure come up and shake your hand Sagaard.

You have more guts than me, I wouldn't shake his hand. ;)

  13. If Kessel gets 3-4 pts, UND doesn't win both in my opinion. It's been a strange year though so who really knows.

I really don't care how many points Kessel gets as long as the Gophers get 3-4 points on the weekend. ;) Closed-circuit to Sagard: Where's the Ballard avatar? ;)
