  1. It was frustrating watching the defense not account for Bolomboy.  The 2-3 zone should have made it harder for him to get the ball (too many times he got the ball in space), and box him out (I don't know how often he rebounded the ball when there were three UND players around, but too often he didn't have a body on him).

And overall the team needs better shot selection.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: UND hopes to beat Weber State for the first time since joining the Big Sky

“We want to establish ourselves as a premier program,” said UND freshman guard Geno Crandall. “This is a great opportunity to do that. We know that if we play the right way and handle our business we can play with any team.”

The team has high aspirations.  Which I think is a good thing.

  3. Hopefully we can keep throwing bigs at Bolomboy and make him work for his.  Would like to see Collins in more to use his athleticism and body to play more defense.  Between Shanks, Collins, Cashman (hopefully), Avants, and Drick, they should be able to make him work some. Plus, he's not a great FT shooter.  Geno has done a good job on other teams #1 guard.  I presume he will get the task again, with some of the work going to Q (if he gets into foul trouble), and Baldwin and Seales picking up the slack.  I'm looking for another good game, and hoping for a win.

This is not another "Fire Jones" type comment.  I am simply curious if anyone with better BB knowledge than I can explain our strategy at the end of the first half.

We called TO after an EWU turnover with 49 seconds left in the half.  It was obvious that our strategy was to hold on to the ball as long as we could (as if we had enough time for us to take the last shot of the half).  With 4 seconds left on the shot clock, Hooker was forced to try to create a shot and was called for a foul.  Fortunately, EWU did not score before the end of the half.

Why would we have stalled (and ended up making a bad play due to the shot clock expiring)?  Wouldn't the normal strategy been to simply go ahead and work for a good shot (my preference) or try to get up a quick shot (either made or missed) so there was 35 or 40 seconds left on the clock.  EWU would have not be able to play for the last shot.  We would have gotten the ball back for the last shot.  In the NBA world, it is simply making sure you have two possessions to your opponent's one.

    What am I missing?

I am not going to go into my rant yet either on Jones.  I am very happy with the win.  But I agree with you. The timeout was fine, but the play call was baffling (which seems to happen too often).  Easily could have had a 2-for-1.  I don't think you are missing anything.  Very nice to see them pull out a close win!

Shanks should not be on the floor

Shanks has pretty good footwork but he is a bit of a black hole once he gets the ball......but I don't put that all on him. Our perimeter guys tend to stay in the same spot when the balls goes into him like they know it's not coming back. They need to move so that when their defender turns his head or hedges towards helping out down low that they have to find our guy again. i.e, if you made the entry from the wing, slide to the corner or if it is a high entry both our wings should slide over a spot.

I love his passion and energy.  I will take a 7ft center (sophomore) that plays hard, and usually smart, like him everyday of the week.  The footwork is there for the most part.  Would like to see him get even closer to the basket when they are working inside/out with him.  Really, his being a black hole is on the Coach though.  He should be told, once he sees a second guy coming, to kick it out. There is usually a guard up high that he could push the ball back to and re-establish.  I know Jones wants to run plays thru him, which is fine, but he isn't big/strong enough to finish thru most double teams yet.  It would be nice to see him finish with more dunks or stronger lay-ups too. Again, he is a sophomore, and as others have pointed out, he needs to eat a ton and get in the weight room.  Hopefully he keeps progressing.

  6. Moral victories suck. I'm tired of the play calling, I'll get to that in another thread.  And I would like to see Shanks kick the ball out when double teamed.

Free throws would definitely make a difference.  Hard to believe the Betty is a home court as bad as this team shoots..

Hey Poindexter - you come to a UND fan site. feed the fire and you are surprised when you read negative comments about SU? Have you ever heard what's said between SDSU/USD fans or Montana/Montana State fans? It's called rivalry talk - now if you want to read hate talk about a rival head over to Bisonswille you'll find an entire category of it.  Meanwhile I still have to question why so many SU trolls take the time to come here - a fan site for the Flagship School of North Dakota that SU only plays once every four years - when you have a team playing for a national championship. So much envy and insecurity, it's like UND hurt you or something?

Who is this rival you speak of? NDSU has a rival? NONSENSE!

Why would they travel 90 miles north when they can make 100'000's of thousands of dollars with an FBS road game or another home game? If UND would pay a 400 to 500 thousand guarantee NDSU would be happy to take it.

ONE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS! - ONE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS! Dr. Evil

Please take a math course.  Or if the team is actually making that much money, why haven't they built an FBS stadium yet?

  9. I am a newer UND fan. I respect the history of the Sioux name, and the honor that was bestowed upon UND.  With the debacle that has been the nickname process, especially the final phase to get the name, fans can still have input and possibly create a change.  I think the final committee failed by not picking a UNIQUE name.  I have already written all the emails to the necessary people, respectfully, stating what I believe.  I will not buy any new logo merchandise, unless it just amazes me.  I will continue to buy UND gear.  As fans, if the majority keeps speaking, respectfully, to try and attain a new nickname, it is possible that a new one could come about.  (Bad part is we may have to endure another "process" at some point in time)  On the other hand, if it becomes embraced by the majority, I will come to accept it.  I WON'T LIKE IT, BUT I WILL ACCEPT IT. (uh, I sound like my old man)  Anyway, it has happened before.  But for now we are the F'n Hawks, I kind of like that usage.  Let's see a logo and see what happens.

  10. USD anyone?

This. I have been thinking.  Why are we travelling to Florida to play an early season tourney. Why can't the Athletic Departments get together and do a tournament of the four Dakota schools?  Either alternate host sites every year.  Or better yet, IMO, alternate between Fargo and Sioux Falls every year.  I'm betting Sanford and Scheels could put some good money into this to make it happen. Obviously hosting at their places.  Get a TV deal done, "The Battle for I-29," something to market. I know quite a few people that would attend this. (Maybe this belongs in a new thread, if so, please move it mods)

Either of the assistants may be an upgrade. If the season goes negative, promote either of them.  Anything that will show the players change is coming. These guys know how talented they are and are not dumb.  They see the errors being made and are getting tired of it.  If something has to be done midseason and isn't, I would then be worried about defection at that point more than if/when a new coach is brought in. The players want a coach that will listen, instruct, be consistent, and get them wins.  You know, the things a good coach does
  12. Was kind of worried that Jones would pull it out in the end, but he choked through it.  A win over NDSU may have been too much to fire him.

Feel bad for our guys that they don't have a leader that will show them how to work as a team.

Jones doesn't listen or want to change his style.

    Jones get talent.

    Jones talent never produces.

Hooker has the talent around him.  Needs the coaching to bring it together.

NEED coaching to be successful next year! It is possible.  The talent is there

  13. i had beer. The one was much better... Maybe because the game started to turn around.

is he always a tool like that? I joked to my friend that he was about to get a technical... And then he did.

    Few thoughts:

I'm not a basketball mind. But it looked like they both deserved to lose based on Free throw shooting. Unacceptable.

UND looks pretty athletic to my untrained eye. NDSU plays as a team more.

Hooker was pretty entertaining to watch in that first half.

NDSU tried to give that game away but UND wasn't interested.

When you have a fan from the other team pointing this out, it might be a problem

  14. I think if you gave Jones the players from Duke or Kentucky he would make a strong push for the NIT.   Probably just miss making the field but it would be close.

There's always the CBI or CIT!  That's what Jones is striving for
