  1. The kids a sitting duck back there. At least Joe can protect himself. Both have proven capable of throwing bad ints.

Agree with this but am concerned that if Bartels doesn't get some playing time, he may decide to go elsewhere. Hopefully he realizes that it is likely he will eventually get his chance due to injury sometime over the next couple years. I don't remember too many years when we had the same QB start the entire season.

  2. "I'm not seeing the efforts" statements by coaches work when the coaches have the respect of the players. And it's not a personal insult.

Calling guys "divas" is name-calling and personal. That's not something a respectful two-way relationship does.

This guy is begging to be put out of OUR misery.

For future reference: "I'm not seeing the efforts from some guys that I expect; thus, there will be changes, either in effort or personnel" is how you communicate such things.

    Perfect. Thank you

  3. If I was a parent of one of the divas I'd tell him to pull his head out of his ass. Mussman has all the right in the world to call his players out. It sends a message when he tells it to the media.

And the message is "I have no respect for the players on this team". Say what you want, it was classless and if he wants to call someone out, there more productive ways to do it than lowering himself and university to that level.

  4. I thought Muss's comment about the players being divas was classless. The team is made up of student athletes, not professionals. How would you feels as a parent of one of those players? It is one thing to call out poor play but you do that with limiting playing time, rigorous and punishing practice drills, demanding more from your players in ways that don't resort to name calling.

ADs and coaches in college athletics have the trust of kids and their families. they have a responsibility to provide a good environment for the student athletes in their programs.

I don't like what I am seeing at UND right now, but I have some confidence that Faison will straighten this situation out. I can't see him letting this go on much longer when it is really starting to reflect poorly on the University.

  5. it's going to take a new coach at least three or four recruiting class to turn this program around.

That shouldn't be the case. our last two recruiting classes have talent, and if we can pick up some d backs and linemen, we should be in reasonable shape. Don't forget that a new coach might bring some recruits with him that we wouldn't have otherwise had a chance at.

  6. Hopefully this just shows that maybe it won't take long for the next UND coach to turn things around. One can only hope, anyway.

I still think the last two recruiting classes have talent, but am more than little worried that this is gonna be a down year for recruiting unless there is a coaching change very soon. A quick turnaround d for UND football is a very legitimate possibility under the right circumstances.

  7. Excellent post. There's a big difference between constructive criticism and bashing the coaching staff. Most of the comments seem to fall into the latter category. We've got a first-year DC and a first-year OC, both with a lot of potential, I believe. Both the defense and the running game have started to show improvement the last couple of games; the defense held EW to 200 yds. below their season average. Excellent improvement. Even with experienced, new DC's and OC's, it takes time for their new system to take hold. We're only halfway through the season; let's give these guys a chance to see what they can do the rest of the way.

They will get there chance. Muss in particular will get his chance. If a former offensive lineman and offensive coordinator can't develop a good offense over the next 5 games when he has one of the best receiving corps in the country, it would be hard to argue that he should stay. this is really in his hands and the AD should be able to make a very informed decision at the end of the year.

  8. That's the problem. UND is suppose to be a "good" team to me. Why isn't UND a good team? Heck why can't UND even finish in the top half of the conference?

We beat Montana last year....and we got blown out by them at home...they improved greatly and UND went the other way greatly.

Montana got their QB back this year and we lost ours from last year.

  9. The fact that losing by "only" 3 touchdowns is being looked at as a positive is a pretty good sign that a change should've been made to this program years ago.

No one is saying that and no one is saying muss should keep his job.

The team was in the game until the wheels came off later in the game with three consecutive turnovers. This is better than anyone expected given the way the past three games went. Just trying to give credit where credit is due.

We have the talent to play in this conference and the expectation should be that we see that talent on a consistent basis. If we don't, there should be a change in the personnel responsible for the product we see. This includes players and coaches.

  10. I liked what I saw on the field today, which is the first time I can say that this season. The defense played well with the exception giving up some big pass plays. the offense was moving the ball well but turnovers killed us. I hope I am seeing the start of a turnaround for this team.

I don't think player talent is an issue on this team, but getting the talent out of the players on a consistent basis is. I think Muss has his fate in his own hands...motivate the players, work harder at showing leadership, raising expectations, playing disciplined, and win out and he keeps his job another year. I hope the AD dept recognizes that there shouldn't be any excuses for anything less that this for the rest of the season. And I hope muss realizes setting high standards and getting the best out of his players isn't something he is inherently good at and he needs to improve in this aspect.

  11. I have a feeling that a lot of these young guys don't have the mental side down yet. Even if that is the case I think they need to play more because they have to learn sometime and some of these older guys aren't helping the team right now. If they go to playing the young guys I would expect more penalties but it can't possibly be much worse.

I keep hearing about the mental side when we have players with talent who aren't playing. Is our defense that complicated? Or better question, is it unecessarily complicated? If we simplify the defense we gain two things. Better talent on the field and players playing faster. Not sure what we are gaining by having a defense that takes some kids three years to learn. Especailly if we are going to give 500 yards a game.

We all know that a good teacher can get more kids to understand d complex material than a poor teacher can. So maybe the other possibility here is the coaching staff is doing a poor job of breaking the defensive schemes down into terms the players can understand.

  12. Time for him to put his money where his mouth is and be a leader then.

Sure. That is what we should expect of a freshman who is redshirting.

Or maybe more realistically we should expect that he will leave in December for a better opportunity. I sure hope not, but it sounds like if there isn't a change in the near future, that is what we will get.

  13. if peters sucks, which i think he does, you don't have to pull norbergs redshirt to try to fix the problem...you could try labatt, rich, the kid from minot?? problem with muss knowing that his job is really on the line you might see sharp at rb, norberg at mlb, and bell at starting tackle in the next game??

Agree, but would hate to see it. THese are all positions where another year focus mostly on just learning the system and adding some size can really make a difference.

  14. That's why I think Norbergs tweet could have been about pulling a redshirt. He would be giving up a quarter of a season but Peters missed some obvious tackles today.

Is pulling Norbergs shirt worth it? Maybe we go 4 - 7 instead of 3 - 8. this year has a good possibility of being a poor recruiting year, so leaving some players with four years left seems like a better choice, and as a player, I gotta believe you prefer to not a waste a year of eligibility on this season.

I suppose if you are Muss, your only interest is getting one more year out of your contract, so you pull the shirt on anyone with a remote possibility of helping the team.
