  1. Fullerton needs to take advantage of the situation and bring in FU and Denver. FU, is the 2 time defending national champ in football and would be travel partner for UND. There would be less chance of leakage to FBS if you keep the North Dakota and Montana schools in one conference and keep them happy.

Denver, great academic addition and travel partner for UNC.

With Idaho announcing they are going to the Sun Belt for football only, will that result in relooking at Idaho's Big Sky membership for Olympic sports? Can't imagine the President's are all that pleased with Idaho, as a division setup for football will not be possible now. Thought it was required that BIg Sky schools have their football in-house.

  2. either the horizon or summit or both is going to die. possibly both. The horizon could collapse in a hurry, the summit on the other hand will likely die a slow, slow death.

Can't see how that would possibly be.

Butler had like nine wins in the NCAA while they were still in the Horizon. Each win equals $250,000 in conference payments over six years. Add in six more appearances, that would be 15 units that the NCAA owes the Horizon in the next couple of years, giving the Horizon $3.75 mill in payments per year. Each school in the Horizon gets a share, so that gives each Horizon school around $400,000 per year. The Summit doesn't have any wins, but has appearances, so the NCAA gives the Summit $1.5 mill /yr, or around $150,000 / school. Anybody with any sense would move from the Summit to the Horizon, especially with the Horizon having a contract with ESPN.

Actually, seems it could benefit SDSU if the Summit League disbanded. If a conference disbands, then the units go to the schools with the appearance or win, not the conference. SDSU could stand to gain $500,000 a year for the next five years if the Summit disbands, as the NCAA money for their appearances would go directly to SDSU, plus pick up extra money if its in the Horizon. It is kind of win / win for SDSU, provided they get in another conference. NDSU would likely get like one payment of $250,000 for its one appearance. SDSU would be up almost a million a year for the next few years if it got a bid to the Horizon and killed off the Summit.

The Horizon has a lot of money to disburse over the next few years. No way to the leftover schools or Summit schools want it to disband, otherwise that money goes to Butler. Practically any school near the Horizon footprint in either the Summit or OVC would move there, provided any football team has a home.

  3. So now I see Dom and Calliou are "speculating" that the Horizon will look to the Dakota's if they lose any more teams. When the MVC was going to lose a team, they instantly nominated NDSU as a replacement, even though NDSU was not even in the Top 10, as it turned out. Now they are completely making sh*t up again about the Horizon.

They completely ignore geography and the fact that a conference like the OVC is right in the Horizon's backyard and can easily add a team or two from their, if need be.

A tweet indicated that the Horizon has interest in Denver and UMKC. The Horizon has a TV contract, so they have to have bigger markets. Maybe even Omaha would have interest. If Denver goes, down goes the Summit unless we join.

Maybe NDSU and SDSU could join the WAC.

  4. I think UND would get a WAC invite over a MVC invite. No way do we even look attractive to any school in that (MVC) conference. Let's not kid ourselves. NDSU is still pinning hopes of a conference move on the SHAC, but by just saying "we are close" and "only 2 million more dollars" is NOT what the conference wants to hear, they want to hear " doors open on the new facility on "this" date, and NDSU is "xx wins and xx losses in the new building". NDSU being in the MVFC, and by putting football in front of anything else is not going to get them into the MVC quicker than its counterpart South Dakota State. Geography is huge and KC is perfect for them, and a travel partner for Wichita State, while NDSU would look like UND of the BSC, and look how UND was frowned upon by media and fans of Sac State. UNI fans wouldn't care to much about Fargo but fans of schools in Indiana, and Kansas wouldn't like it.

It's probably safe to say that Omaha will get in the MVC well before SDSU or NDSU. Market and facilities (Omaha is getting a new arena) trump what those two schools offer. A Dakota school really needs to become a media dance darling like FGCU to even enter into consideration for the MVC.

  5. I think this one didn't hurt as bad because this wasn't as good a team, for whatever reason, and the result, the better team that day winning, seemed just. It reminded me of 1999 in that BC that day was just better; a very good Sioux team couldn't get anything going all day.

Looking back at the "outs", the ones that kill me are the ones where UND outplays the other team and leaves the ice having played their last game. Looking back,

1998: Karl gets injured in practice and UND goes down in flames, giving Yost probably its most fantastic moment. The Sioux played hard and well, but goaltending was a problem.

1999: BC stifled a great team, and pretty much deserved to win.

2001: An unbelievable performance by Jeff Panzer led a great Sioux effort, one that should have probably led to the first back-to-back in a long time. Scott Clemmenson said otherwise.

    2002: No NCAA game.

2003: The Sioux played hard and had the puck a lot, but Ferris Wheel State flew around and converted a number of high energy plays in a blowout.

2004: Tied for the worst result ever, UND has the puck the whole game, and Denver scores on a deflection on their first shot of the period with 3+ minutes left in the game. This one would take a long time to get over.

2005: A Sioux team, a mash unit, whatever. Immediately post-Bina, this team went on a run, won the beanpot and left a trail of terrified forwards in its wake. Another game where the final score didn't reward the team that had the better of the play and chances. DU goaltended their way to another.

2006: The kiddie-corps of forwards was brilliant, but the defensive group of four young freshmen plus Smaby was in over its head. Even so, this team was doing everything right except scoring, while BC was picking corners on odd-man rushes. The bad angle goal JP gave up in the second put the brakes on the comeback until it was too late.

2007: DOT played well but Brian Boyle's long reach kept breaking plays up. If not for some extremely unfortunate plays/calls late in the third, this could have gone UND's way.

2008: Neither 2006 nor 2007 were embarrasments, but this one was. You could see this coming when Princeton skated circles around UND in the regionals only to suffer their unjust loss.

2009: Shaking my head at how UNH had no answer for a brutish top line (created for that game) of VV, Frattin and Malone, then 0.01. It felt like UND was the better team but had trouble keeping UNH at bay in the third. The 0.01 made this one linger ... and linger.

2010: Yale hadn't played in two weeks and looked like they were shot out of a cannon, and UND was tired and looked every bit of it. They were game and made it close, but this was not one where Yale lucked into the win.

2011: See 2004. Not really over it yet.

2012: Worn out, overmatched, used up their miracle, but this was a hell of an effort by everyone involved..

2013: No excuses like fatigue, just outplayed by a team that deserved their win. Had a few bounces gone differently, the result could have been different. I wonder if the Frozen Four might have gone like 2008.

    The best teams here? 1998, 1999, 2004, 2011. Maybe 2006/2007 a notch lower.

Soul crushing defeats (played great and deserved better): 2001, 2004, 2005, 2011.

Played even at best, or outplayed. Not an unfair result: 1999, 2003, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013.

    Excellent post.

For this season, I think the actions of a few that resulted in suspensions really affected trust and team chemistry throughout the season. Nothing jelled because the players that should have been leaders weren't early on. It's one thing to have a party. It's another to purposely mess with a teammates body with the end result of causing a hospital visit.

  6. How about doing it like the WCHA Final Five? Twelve team league, give the top 4 teams a bye. The other 8 play each other with teams 5-8 hosting teams 9-12. Then have the rest of the tournament at a designated location such as Boise, SLC, Vegas, or Reno. Reseed so #1 seed plays the lowest remaining seed and so on...

Doubt there is enough money in it for that to work. In the WCHA, most teams average at least 4000 and then play at least 2 games. In the Big Sky, plane tickets on short notice would need to be bought, and few teams have attendance enough to even compensate the visitors for their travel costs. Conference tournaments are more about making money than creating a real playoff.

  7. For the record, I like the current format where the regular season champ hosts, allowing the best team the easiest path to the Dance. If UND would have gotten hot and won this year's tournament, we surly would have been a 16 seed. Although the chances are still slim, Montana has a much better chance of getting a win in the tourney with a 13 seed than we would have.

Agree in principle, but would have liked UND's chances in the "play in" first round against NC A&T or Brooklyn or Liberty. WInning that game pays as much as a second round game, which UND would have no chance in vs a #1 seed.

  8. So what would happen if UND was able to host the men's side of the BSC tournament? With the NCHC first round playoffs scheduled the same weekend, the Ralph complex would be a real mess. Could starting times be staggered? With the championship game on ESPNU, that time is set in stone for the Saturday game.

  9. Wow, I can't believe we won that game, UND is LEGIT to the CORE. When we were down 12 with 16 left and all the momentum in your guys' favor, I was getting sick, I'm glad Weber was able to come from behind.

I never really had any doubts about UND's invitation to the Big Sky glad I was right, North Dakota to the Big Sky was 100% brilliant.

Glad I could come on here and talk with all you guys, you have all been very classy and knowledgeable fans. enjoy my visits.

You guys are gonna be very scary good next year. Congrats on the great season, hopefully it's not over and you guys get invited to a post season tourney. I would say see you this fall, but we don't play a football game till 2014. So see you next hoops season.

Thanks, WILD. You're a class act.

That's the team that many of us thought UND would be, but injuries the loss of two JC transfers just devastated this team. Huff still is way underweight after his broken jaw/liquid diet and Brekke only now looked at full strength.

It would be really awesome to host the tournament. Know that Weber will be right up there next year.

  10. After the SDSU game and losing on a last second 3, thought we were due one.

The mistakes in the last minute were painful.

Wilmer was really coming into his own. It's too bad he couldn't have gone to prep school or something for one year. Another year of development could have really made him into an outstanding center.

Will be interesting next year with Salmonson, Nash, and Traylor (if he's back) what the inside game can look like. Weber St must have outweighed us 2:1.

  11. Biggest game in decades for UND men's basketball.

Will Wilmer and Brekke both need to on the court to stop Weber's bigs? That would really be a switch in lineup.

One key has to be the ability to hit the three, to keep Weber from collapsing in and stopping the drives.

Think it will be either very close or a blow out be Weber.

Surprised by the limited talk here. After all, Michigan Tech isn't that much of a challenge on the hockey side.

  12. http://kenpom.com/blog/index.php/weblog/entry/big_sky_log5

Enthusiasm probably needs to be tempered a bit, at least for this year. Next year is another story. UND has not yet proven it can play with either Montana or Weber St. Most likely, UND will need to beat both. Pomeroy gives UND a 1.5% chance of winning the autobid, an 8% chance of being in the final, and a 60% chance of being in the semifinals. (60% chance of winning vs SUU, ~13% chance of winning vs Weber, ~18% of winning vs Montana) Would think UND's chances are are bit higher than this, because it seems Pomeroy's analysis includes games when Huff was injured when UND's record is horrible, but certainly not more than 3-4% chance of winning the entire tournament.

Montana and Weber State have combined to go 64-2 against other Big Sky foes the last two seasons. It shouldn’t be a surprise then that these two teams account for 95% of the possibilities for the conference champion. It might be a bit of surprise, though, that these two teams nearly split those chances even though Montana gets to host the event and they need to play one fewer game to earn the title. Weber State has generally been shredding its opponents worse than Montana and thus is viewed as the better team in this analysis.
  13. Huff makes first team All-Big Sky. Anderson gets second team.

UND record with Huff out: 0-7 vs DI (2-0 vs NAIA )

UND record with Huff playing but not starting: 2-3

UND record with Huff starting and playing full game: 11-5

Big Sky record with Huff starting: 11-4

Big Sky record w/o Huff starting: 1- 4

  14. You said she was a "militant maxism" and from Sarah Palin and Sharron Angle speaches they are militants also. Do you even know who Sharron Angle even is? Or Aiken and Murdouch? Angle, Murdouck, and Aiken were Republican senatorial candidates that were defeated because of their radical militant ideas. Aiken and Murdouch were defeated in strong red states.

Its clear that you hate devout Christians in politics. You are a anti-spiritual bigot, like the far-left of the UND faculty. Anyone like all those politicians who view the unborn as having a sacred right to life is detestable in your eyes. But if a marxist pagan like Angela shows up, you rejoice.

Give your anti-Christian crusade a rest on this board.

  15. these grievances aren't historic. Forgiveness should never be confused with acquiescence.

Robert Byrd in the Senate was a KKK member for most of his life, but never got into any trouble from the media on it, because the media liked him. These kids are getting more grief than Robert Byrd ever got, and kids are just guilty of stupidity.

So what punishment do these kids deserve? Really like to hear that.

  16. You really sound like a RR parent. A lot of defending going on

Yeah, right. Went to Central years ago.

Yeah, lets attack the kids that prompted those hats to be removed. The kids self moderated themselves within a minute. Yet all of them will be labeled as perpetrators.

How is a photo a story without an understanding of what happened before and after? How is an act of stupidity a crime? It wasn't like these kids went and forged tens of thousands of signatures on a petition.

  17. You are not making sense. Are you saying that the black community is suppose to be all fine with the klan when not much has changed in America. Example all the RWNs clamoring for Obama's impeachment?

Of course I'm not making sense to an academic type that has immersed himself in the ideology of historical ethnic grievances and how those grievances need to be inflicted on the grandchildren and greatgrandchildren of those who inflicted them.

You are advocating continued ethnic grievances and hatred. I am not. I am asking for forgiveness that heals. You have no knowledge of forgiveness.

Forgiveness is foreign to you, which makes me grieve for lack of a spiritual life.

  18. What is militant "maxism"? What about Sarah Palin, Sharron Mangle, Aikns, Murdouch.... What do you call their speech and actions?

Cell phones change what one writes. Are you really that slow?

Marxism. Yeah, Sarah Palin a marxist.

As for Angela Davis, not a huge fan at all of her tactics and/or politics; but from a historical perspective and her place in it, I think it's valuable to listen to viewpoints that differ from my own. I'm not a big fan of echo chambers and only listening to those that are of like mind. Lastly, I would defend her right under the first amendment to gather and profess whatever she wants, and I would defend anyone who wishes to assemble and listen to her speak or to debate her politics. Whether she would do the same for me and my politics, is another matter, but I don't care; I'm not like her, and she's not like me. That's the beauty of America.

So why do neither UND nor the Herald actually present her current ideology as it is other than painting it as "civil rights". That PC at its worst. And if I mention her continued dedication to marxism by even militant means, I get attacked by you.

Double standard there. As if there are not far-left leaning professors at UND that have great reverence for her.

  19. Defensive? I merely agreed with your general assessment of the veracity or, lack there of, of Herald reporting, and suggested your inaccurate (hardly sarcastic) description of a public event would make you an awesome fit for that bastion journalistic integrity. (:

Your response in not acknowledging Miss Davis' militant maxism is quite telling. Certainly you don't qualify as a jounalist or a poster with integrity.
