  1. So this brings about an interesting discussion: If UND still has a contract with FCS, why would select non-hockey events be broadcast while hockey games not broadcast. I would think viewership would be highest for hockey games. Now, I know that CBSSN has NCHC national rights, but there are non-conference games that would apply. Anyway, it's good for the non-hockey sports that they will get some national coverage, as well as good regional coverage. I'm anxious to see what MidcoSN broadcast schedule for the season is.

  2. Iowa St announced it's vball schedule:

    8/30 - 8/31 @ North Dakota tournament

    SDSU, Texas A&M, UND

All three games for UND should be good draws.

NDSU at home this year, too, right? Any other OOC games known?
  3. UND won the game that was on Root Sports last year (over Montana), but there weren't many other games that would turn heads of Root Sports programming directors and say "We need more games with North Dakota." Win a Big Sky title, and that will change. (I hope). On a related note, was a Midco subscriber able to watch that game last year? I was in Bismarck watching on satellite.

  4. The same could be said for basketball, but everyone likes a Cinderella story, right? So let the Bemidji States of the college hockey world be a Cinderella. All the reasons you state benefit the dozen or so perennial NCAA hockey powers, but don't do much to create additional interest in the game.

  5. Not sure why so many people think best-of-three series are needed for the tournament. If you're the better team, you shouldn't need three games to prove it - go out there and win the damn game! If you can't get geared up to win one game when it counts the most, then you deserve to lose. I think the 16-team single-elimination format is the right way to go - just let the #1 seeds host the regionals and the attendance problems are solved.

  6. I think it's weird/awesome that Minnesota, the 1 seed in the regional, plays the early game, and UND gets the late game. I'd think usually the 1 seed plays later.

I'd actually rather play the first game. Get the win outta the way, and then relax while watching the next game, knowing you've already advanced.
  7. The way Drake went to the net on Thursday, he could be a nice addition to that top line. Surely he has confidence going right now whereas O'Donnell may not, who knows.

The funny thing about this is, when we had the DOT line, even though Duncan won the Hobey it seemed like he was the afterthought. Well...we may be witnessing what it's like to have a DOT line without the D. Knight and Kristo really need their Duncan!

I always tell myself that Hak is just playing possum and not getting a lot of these guys together on film for a reason! :)

That would be awesome if he actually did that!
  8. Anybody else flip over to the Minnesota HS basketball tourney to watch Park Center, and more specifically, Quinten Hooker? He had a pretty decent game, and looks like a great addition to the roster next year.

  9. Final RPI is very important to the schools from major conferences when it comes to seeking an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament. Therefore, they are reluctant to schedule too many teams from low-major and mid-major conferences that have weak RPIs. Schools from the Missouri Valley that have RPI's ranging from 40-125 have alot better chance of getting games with a high-major than does a school like us at this point. The Big Sky had 2 schools with an RPI under 100, while the rest were in the 200's and higher. That is not very appealing to a mid-level program that is a member of a high-major league that may find itself on the bubble come selection time.

For example, if Minnesota would have played us this year instead of NDSU, their RPI would have taken a significant hit regardless of the outcome of the game because NDSU's RPI is so much higher than ours. I don't know how the formula works, but I actually think that this year in a hypothetical situation, a Minnesota win against a North Dakota (or SUU or UNC or whoever) in place of a loss to NDSU (or SDSU, or UNI, or whoever) would have hurt their RPI more.

The RPI is a big key to making the at-large selections, and there is a big difference between playing a school with an RPI in the 60-70's versus playing one with an RPI in the mid to low 200's.

So how does one go about raising their RPI if teams that would boost RPI if beaten won't schedule games? I suppose beating Weber St. and Montana would help.
  10. I understand what you are saying but it is part of the process to establishing the basketball programs at the next level. I am very happy to see UND continuing to play. I hope that this type of tournament better prepares the team for the Big Sky tournament next year. UND had a great opportunity to beat Weber St this year. It came down to some bad possessions and decisions within the last 1:30 of the game. Taking a poor shot from the top of the key versus taking it the rim with 6 seconds on the shot clock, not providing enough spacing to allow a quick double team and steal. Not taking the open shot and then not rotating the ball to the top of the key and trapping the offense on the wing. All plays that the team gets to review and work on. Hopefully taking the next step this year in the CIT or winning the Big Sky next year and going to the NCAAs.

Here is an interesting article with Oakland's coach Kampe talking about his approach to scheduling and it's role in developing the Oakland program.

    http://collegeinside...hree-prong-fork

Loved the article with Oakland's coach. Oakland has the advantage of being close to several major BB programs (think Big 10, Big East, etc), while UND does not. I like scheduling some Summit League teams as a gauge for how we stack up with that conference, but Summit League teams can't be our only non-conference schedule. I wonder, do big D-I programs not like playing the small D-I programs, kind of like us not wanting to play D-II or D-III? It may get harder and harder to get the big-name opponent. Just think, the Big 10 is already not scheduling FCS opponents in football. Are big-time basketball programs next? The plus side, is that there are tons of great mid-major basketball programs who would be more than enough competition to keep our feet wet.
  11. I just wish they'd talk about the game action instead of everything else. (I don't care if it's 6-0, 5-0, or whatever)

Doing this is not uncommon even amongst the most highly paid, seasoned network sports announcers. It's called "garbage time" and just meant to be a filler to the unimportant happenings of a blowout game in its late stages.
  12. Just random thinking here, so don't rag on me too hard: Is the CIT a NCAA-sanctioned event? If not, do NCAA rules apply, such as transfers, red-shirts, etc.? I'm guessing they still would, but not sure why. Just wondering if we'd be legal to play some of the guys we've been waiting to see.

  13. Where did you find this info so soon?! I've been all over the internet in the last 15-20 minutes, and nothing. Maybe I'm internet challenged! Anyway, tough draw for them, and I think we'll neet a Weber State type of effort.

  14. Even if Traylor does not regain his eligibility, perhaps a lineup with both Brekke and Nash would be effective, with either Salmonson or some other new juco transfer as a backup at the 4-5 positions. My hope is that Nash can at least replace the production of Wilmer, but we will see. Wilmer far exceeded any realistic expectations this season.

My question - where was the Mitch Wilmer of the last two games during the entire season?! Maybe it was better that teams in the tourney weren't prepared at all for his kind of production of the last two games.
  15. CBI is more of a major conference/mid major tournament. CIT is strickly a mid major tournament

Ok, thanks. So probably a little better competition in the CBI? Still think they could combine and get some great FBS conf. vs. FCS conf. matchups. I know for certain I will be at any post-season game that UND would host. (Actually, my wife and I drove to Colorado Springs in 2011 to see UND take on Air Force, and if it weren't for my grandma dying in March 2012, we probably would have gone to Des Moines, as well, to see them play Drake)
  16. If the satellite companies were able to get MidcoSportsNet I would drop midco cable so fast. I would think this reason alone is why it will never happen. They would lose a ton of customers who are fed up and only stick with them because of their exlusive coverage.

For what it's worth, Midco wants to be picked up by the satellites. Perhaps they haven't considered a loss of customers.
  17. I've seen how both dish and direct tv work through some personal experiences. You get a cookie cutter response for these types of requests. Even if directv gets tens of thousands of these requests I doubt they'll blink an eye at it. Directv has already trumped Sioux programming for other games all year long. They only have so much bandwidth to show so many things and I'd venture to guess it boils down to ratings.

If midcosportsnet wants to sell their programming they'll need to bring a successful track record to the table. The big ten network has done it. Can midco do it? Sure they can. Problem is midcosportsnets current footprint's population is minute compared to the big ten. I'd like to see it happen but won't hold my breath.

Just make sure you're emailing DirecTV or Dish while you're not holding your breath.
  18. The game is not on the schedule for Saturday either.

According to Schlossman, it is on 626.

WEEKEND VIEWING: Both games will be on MidcoSN and Fox College Sports Central. There is NO DirecTV tonight. There IS DirecTV on Saturday (626). There IS a webcast for purchase at www.undsports.com and there WILL BE live chats that be tons of fun so come join.

  19. Id bet the Chances of dish or directv picking up midcosportsnet is very very slim.

Don't get me wrong I'd be very happy if it happened but I wouldn't count on it.

That's why Midco needs our help. I know many that frequent this forum, including myself (even though I'm a Midco customer), have emailed either DirecTV or Dish. Doing so won't hurt anything, and can only help the matter.
