  1. Hopefully not too far off-topic, but I wanted to pose the question: By the time Joe Mollberg is a senior, where you do you see the UND football team? What would be considered a success, and what would be considered a failure?

  2. I'm very impressed with how this team has improved its free throw shooting. What was a major liability in the previous two seasons has become a great asset this season (save for the UMKC game).

Having said that, how is it that our starting point guard is just a 52% FT shooter?

I don't remember Webb struggling at FT line before, but this year he has been completely awful, and cost us a couple games. Anyone know his FT stat from Freshman and Sophomore years?
  3. My DirecTV guide shows this as an upcoming event on the Fox College Sports Channel. Does anyone know if FCS is actually picking this game up? I thought they only planned to carry hockey this year...

It wouldn't be beyond the realm of possibility...FCS picked up at least one of the volleyball games televised by Midco.
  4. No doubt this is a must win cause league favorite Montana is next and the possiblity of being 0-3 would not be good.

Actually, @Idaho St. is our third conference game (Jan. 3), and @Weber St. is after that (Jan. 5). Montana is our next home conference game (Jan. 10)
  5. But then what happens to the 2nd round? A regional final as a single game at a neutral site would draw a lot less than the current regional format.

Exactly. That's why we don't need to go to best-of-three at home sights. Keep the format the same (16-team, single elimination), but let the #1 seeds host. Attendance would sky rocket, and more than likely you'd have the best four teams at the Frozen Four.

  6. If they would just reward the #1 seeds with the tournament in their barn they wouldn't have to worry about fairness of travel, take a week off after the league tournaments IF they need to for setting up the logistics and ticket sales, then play the regionals at the top seeds house and the Frozen Four at the predetermined site. I would bet attendance would be substantially better too.

I would really not like to see a best-of-three first round the way the WCHA is set up, we could be looking at 9 games in 17 days, that would be a wreck, and I think other conferences play a similar format.

Depending on how the NCHC tourney will be set up it could be better for us, but I'm sure other, bigger conferences would balk, and with good reason.

Totally agree with everything you said. I wrote the same thing (before I read this) over on Schlossman's blog.
  7. Renewed rivalries. 2 years ago we UND played NDSU in men's basketball in Fargo and there was no television. 2 years ago UND played NDSU in Volleyball in Fargo and no television. This year UND plays NDSU in women's basketball in Fargo and no television. Last year UND played NDSU in men's basketball and volleyball in Grand Forks and both games were televised. Why is this?

Because UND has a TV contract, so the ones played in Grand Forks were televised. The Sioux-Bison men's game next week is televised from Fargo, though it wasn't part of the UND package released at the beginning of the year. MidCo must have realized it would be a good programming decision. I wonder who the announcers will be?
  8. Kinda looking ahead at the class of 2014, but it appears that UND has gotten a verbal commitment from 5'11 S/OH Sydney Griffin from Marshall, MN. Currently the #6 rated Junior in the BreakdownUSA recruiting ranks (which does the preseason books for Minnesota, same place where SiouxVolley got his info). This girl has come a long way since playing varsity as a freshman, and she is only getting better as a player. She is part of a very strong program and a great coach. She is like a swiss army knife of a volleyball player.

According to the article, she is a setter. Hardee must have her tagged as the setter of the future after Nikki Husheldt graduates (Griffin will be a freshman when Husfeldt is a senior).
  9. Looks like we are starting to really win those ND battles with NDSU.

We have 2 girls so far, wonder how many we are going to bring is being that we have so many people coming back

I wonder if some of the girls won't be with the team next year. Hardee is already playing two freshmen every game (McKenzie Hart, and Lauren Clarke), while some sophomores are hardly played, if ever (Kim Kuechle, Kyle Evert, Emily Asche). Naomi Dahl was red-shirted, and now in her second year has hardly played. When other schools come in, their rosters are significantly shorter than ours, so it gets me wondering why we have so many girls - I guess we have enough for two teams in practice.
  10. I just noticed that both the Fargo and Brookings games will be on Midco Sports Net. Hawaii will have a free webcast here.

I knew the SDSU game would be on Midco (both USD and SDSU have Midco TV deals as well), but not about the NDSU game. How'd you find that out?
  11. Here's my non-statistical assessment of last night's game and the upcoming season:

Huff still feels that he can and should do it all - be a team player, Huff

Free Throws look to be improved

Alonzo Traylor appears to be a nice pick-up

I've never seen Jaron Nash play, but I can bet we're gonna need him pretty badly

The ability to create turnovers is there, but we didn't hold on to the ball as well as we needed to either

Hopefully shooting percent was an anomoly this game - there's no way we can go the season shooting like that

  12. No doubt the non league games will be brutal and the grind of the Big Sky with a quality opponent almost every game will be a test. Every UND team has struglled in the Big Sky this first year. I agree next year will be our best chance to go really far but I'm still very hopefull this team comes together this year and makes some serious noise and a solid run in the tournament. This now junior class has shown its playing their best at tournament time.

True, but it's not exactly like we've been cellar dwellwers (well, except for soccer).
  13. The students aren't leading the fans in cheering. They don't have any new cheers and they don't seem to be doing any old cheers. It's hard to get a chant going when the announcer is constantly talking or the music is blaring from the time the whistle blows to the face off. Some fans tried to get the "Let's go Sioux" cheer going, but it starts so fast it ends in three seconds. (The band was in Montana - they are usually good at getting something going.) I think our teams play better when we are cheering loudly for them. Any thoughts on ways to get new chants or cheers going?

Why would the band go to a road game when there is a home series of games? (ok, 2, but still)
  14. Felicia, Lauren and Lexi looked bewildered out there tonight (less so on Lexi, but not her best night) No one really stood out. ISU had more energy, digs, blocks and fewer unforced errors than UND. The ISU subs were even louder than the UND crowd at times. A half step backward tonight. And I got a parking ticket. Yeah, I'm bitter. :glare: Thanks UND.

Myabe the Vikings game had something to do with attendance. But, since UND is consistently losing to these teams in the top half of the standings, I think excitement for volleyball might be waning. I know I'm dissapointed with the number of losses, especially at home. I'm surprised the girls can't defend their home court better. :/
  15. night games. I know you old people who get up at 6 am everyday don't get it, but students aren't going to bother at 2 pm except for homecoming, so deal with it. 4:30 games or later.

also, make tailgating free. I had no idea they charged for that. Stupid.

The majority of college football games around the country are played in the afternoon (some even start before noon - when I was in college Gopher games started at 11 AM). Plus, when other teams have home games on Saturday (like hockey), they don't want them overlapping.
  16. I think it would be:

North: UND, UNC, UM, MSU, EWU, UI

South: ISU, WSU, SUU, NAU, Sac St., PSU

I don't think they will split up ISU and Weber. And North Dakota's only logical travel partner is Northern Colorado while Sac St.'s only logical travel partner is Portland St....................

Not sure of established Big Sky rivalries, but I would think Idaho and Idaho St. would want to be in the same division.
  17. From the Big Sky website announcing the return of University of Idaho:

"The Big Sky Conference has already begun the process of exploring a move to a two-division, six-team format starting in 2014-15 for sports such as basketball and volleyball."

What are your speculations for the two divisions? Here's my theory:

    North Division South Division

    North Dakota Northern Colorado

    Montana Weber State

    Montana State Southern Utah

    Idaho Portland State

    Idaho State Sacramento State

    Eastern Washington Northern Arizona

Formatting didn't quite turn out the way I typed it. This may work better.

North Division: UND, UM, MSU, UI, ISU, EWU

South Division: UNC, WSU, SUU, PSU, Sac. SU, NAU
