  1. Not to rain on anyone's parade, but if I were going to develop a year-round golf attraction a la Top Golf in Grand Forks, I would 100% not have the range face N/W/NNW/WNW, which is the most likely orientation using the existing RR range.  The prevailing winds - especially coupled with cool temps from October to April - would make the site almost unbearable.  Fargo's appears to be oriented downrange east (i.e., away from I-29), which (along with due south) is probably ideal in this neck of the woods.  Although only time will tell if you can really sustain a viable 12-month golf operation in this climate.

Has anyone played Top Golf in MSP during the offseason?  I know theirs is oriented to the north, and I have to believe that if their prevailing winds are anything like ours, it would tend to be somewhat unpleasant.

I think a pitch/putt bubble/dome would be far more useful.

"The Grand Forks Planning and Zoning Commission has approved a blade sign for the Crooked Pint Ale House on South Columbia Road.  The signage will say “Green Mill on the Go.”  According to a staff report the Crooked Pint Ale House business will stay but they plan on offering Green Mill pizza.  Current code does not allow a sign attached to a building to project more than two (2) feet."

Hope they bring back the mostaccioli, too.  That was one of my favorites at the GM before they dumped it from the menu.

I hate to ruin the fun, and I hope I'm wrong about this, but the rumor mill in my corner of the world says it's going to be converted to a bank.

Why not a combination bank and car wash?

How many people even bank in person anymore???

My wife is the GM of a franchise store in town that has not re-opened the lobby. It is purely a labor shortage decision in her (technically her owners decision, not hers) case, and the corporate directive is to leave lobbies closed until you are absolutely sure you are staffed sufficiently to maintain a clean and orderly lobby.

No, she is not losing business. in fact, sales are thru the roof because of Door Dash, Uber Eats, etc. Customer preferences have changed. If they weren't overly busy trying to keep up with delivery services they would have more manpower available to staff the lobby.

Yes, she has raised wages. A high school kid with zero experience can now earn $15/hour, and it goes up from there with experience.

Believe me, these people are just as frustrated as everyone else with the current state of things. They are working harder than ever to keep understaffed stores running after two years of dealing with customers complaining about covid stuff that they had no control over (Corporate policy; follow, or lose your job. period). Please have some understanding, and be kind. Thank you.

    Understood, and appreciated.  :)

  5. Is anyone here - or is anyone here close to - an operator of one of the handful of franchises in town that has not yet resumed dining in?

I have a question -- do you feel like you're doing the right thing at this point, as in, making a prudent business decision, or do you realize that you are losing business and even alienating customers, perhaps losing them altogether (like, forever)?

And if you happen to operate along an interstate highway (looking at you, McD on Gateway), do you not realize the valuable service that such establishments ordinarily provide to travelers, esp. parents with small kids, etc., that simply cannot be achieved in your overcrowded drive-thru or using one of the many food delivery apps?  I mean, WTF???  Dashboard or car seat dining - which can suffice in a pinch - is hardly ideal, and should not be considered a long-term solution.

While McDonald's is what it is culinary-wise (don't hate!), is there really any substitute for safe, affordable, convenient, reliable, predictable food while traveling, along with a place to stretch one's legs, use the restroom, etc.?

Is this the truck stop renaissance we've all been eagerly anticipating?

NDHP or ND DOT are not going to do this. State highways and Interstates closure are not that simple

This makes no sense.  We have, like 2-3 days of advance notice of blizzards, and they manage to close roads just fine.  Miles and miles of them.  Like from MB to SD.

With concerts and events, you get, like 2-3 months of notice.  And we're talking about a couple of lanes from 32nd to Demers.  For a couple of hours.

That ain't happening. You don't get to close interstate highways like that.

Au contraire...the ND Highway Patrol has the broad power "to ensure safety by directing traffic as conditions may require notwithstanding the provisions of law."

A few yards of concrete, a couple of swing gates, some cones and fixed and electronic signage (most of the latter of which are already on hand at DOT).  Infinitely cheaper than a highway interchange.  Couple of hours before or after the event, you wouldn't even know it was there.  Max 5-10 minute detour through industrial park west of town for NB truck traffic.  Some thru-travelers may even utilize the exit onto 32nd to stop for food/fuel, thus creating sales tax potential.  I bet folks living in neighborhoods east/southeast of Valley Dairy would jump for joy.  And the convenience for Fargoans...it's a slam dunk!

To compare the Fargodome has two direct outlets to I-29 and three separate ways to get out of their parking lots.  The Alerus Center has one way out.  Why?  Because it's up against I-29 (too close).

Where there's a will, there's a way. Some freeway-adjacent venues have limited use access (i.e., usually closed lanes/ramps) that can be engaged to route traffic in and out on a continual basis during peak utilization. A slight inconvenience to freeway thru traffic in one or both directions, but could be a solution. Especially since the crush of GFK-bound event traffic is one-way in and then one-way out.

Pre-event traffic exits NB I-29 directly into Alerus parking lot.

After the show, close both NB lanes of I-29 @ 32nd and reduce SB to the outer lane at Demers.  Then have event traffic exit directly at Alerus across the NB lanes and paved median and into the inside SB lane and merge going south.
