  1. Budget thrill ride (a/k/a Allegiant) screwing with the GFK market.

    https://www.grandforksherald.com/lifestyle/travel/7257713-Allegiant-Air-abruptly-cancels-all-flights-in-Grand-Forks-during-month-of-December

Delta has to be thinking KA-CHING!  Which is fine, BUT...this would be the perfect time for Delta to restore GFK service to something closer to pre-COVID levels.  Not sure if anyone's tried booking lately since life got back to normal-ish, but 3 flights a day is just crap for connecting, and consistently super-full CRJs are just blecch.

I don't think Climate Pledge Arena will sell a lot of beer. Domestic can $13. Premium can $14. Mixed drink $16. Water $7. Seattle pricing.

At those prices, may not need the canopy over the visitor tunnel.

Charras and Tequila is doing a soft-opening in the old Ruby Tuesday location out by Lowes.   Haven't been to the GF one yet but been to the one in DL.   Fresh guac made at your table with your ingredients - an amazing start to an excellent menu.  Go beyond the regular Norwegian/Mexican combo taco platter and try something you've never had before.   You won't be disappointed!

PS - won't replace the joint on the East Side by Hugo's right away - BUT they might have to step up their game.   Like re-painting their sign.  c'mon MAN!  Walgreens is going to block you completely from view.

Overall very good. Excellent service. A little pricey, but the real takeaway is to plan ahead. Arrived early - 20 minutes after open - to a 30 minute wait. Not a lot of seating, as the floor plan is dominated by two large bars.

    We'll go back, for sure.

GF is so starved for good food that any decent concept is going to thrive.

PRO TIP: Spring for the churros.

  5. Hindsight is 20/20, right?  As I saw it, the OT shot by Sanderson was on net, and could have just as easily been caught and frozen, or caromed away from defenders altogether.  Instead, it fortuitously deflected cleanly off the goaltender's chest, and right to a waiting defenseman.  The 2nd defenseman alertly gestured to the 1st in the direction of the advancing 3rd, and a long pass was successfully executed.  A game-winning, head's up play.

Did I miss something, or is there an unwritten rule in 3x3 hockey about shot angles and dump-and-change?  Were UND's other skaters changing, or out of position on the play?  Is the puck carrier any less responsible if he carries in, tries to circle behind the goal, and is stripped by a defender?  Once he is committed inside the dots, it's not like he can carry back out, and if he's alone his options are very limited.  Maybe tie up the puck in the corner and wait for help?

Not trying to be combative here...just trying to understand the criticism.  As someone else noted above, 3x3 just begs fluky plays.

It seems to be a rite of passage for their blue chip freshmen to be photographed at the big house. Always struck me as odd.

Meh, every campus has its landmarks, and every AD has his/her pride-and-joy facilities.  I doubt very much that it's much more than a whistle stop...maybe it's just first because of how the campus is laid out.  Or maybe an athletics lackey gives the same, exact tour to every sport's recruits.

Show me a recruit who gets photographed in a classroom, or a lab.

It never ends… now the National Labor Relations Board said in guidance released Wednesday that college athletes who could earn millions should be considered employees. Private colleges could see student athletes unionize to negotiate their “working conditions.” The NCAA disputes this saying college athletes who compete against other college athletes are students.  When will this end?

As is often the case, Congress needs to act. When they don’t, the executive and judicial branches abuse the separation of powers until you can hardly recognize the American ideal underneath.

Employee status for purposes of unionization, collective bargaining, etc. is one thing, but the NLRB has historically not exercised the type of power they are threatening to wield here, with agency action against the NCAA, conferences, and public schools. And I’m not sure that student-athletes yet understand - or will like - all that’s coming, if this erosion continues to its logical end.

Regardless of your political affiliation or views on student-athletes, this should scare you.  A single political appointee (a lawyer…not even a department head) has just made substantive federal law and jeopardized college sports with the stroke of a pen. By fiat.

I believe in amateurism, but it’s not sustainable if we don’t agree across-the-board to treat college sports as the unique creature it is. Exemption, or extinction. And having read the recent Supreme Court case, I think I know where this is headed.

Is this an indoor arena thing only? I went to Lambwau with 77,000 fans and did none of this. Went to Target Field and there was none of this...

So you've been to the homes of cheese and whine?

Nice try Mr. carpet steamer service salesman.

    I've learned my lesson.

I gladly pull on that discreet protection and will advocate fully for a mandated 2nd pair.

    With Dri-Weave. Lightly scented.

  10. When you think about some of the business that have limited on-site access (in some cases, for more than a year now), it's kinda funny how many are the LAST place you'd find anyone concerned about their health.

I wonder where they will be located?  It would be nice to have some restaurants on the south side of town.   I have eaten at several Freddy's always good food and different fast food then your typical fast food restaurant.

Columbia and Washington each between 32nd and 47th seem ripe for commercial/retail/restaurant expansion.

  12. Starting to feel like this will be the worst-attended UND event/destination game in a long time.  Maybe the local elementary schools in Nashville, children's hospitals, area Make-a-Wish, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, youth hockey orgs, etc., will be the ones to benefit.  (Shades of Sioux Falls a few years back, and all of the good we accomplished.)

On an unrelated note, this data certainly points out how successful the UND Foundation has been in fundraising. Only three schools have larger endowments - and they are all private universities!

Endowments can be deceptive when it comes to the economic health of an institution.

Maybe a fairer assessment would include a comparison of gains versus cuts in jobs, academic programs, and sports, and - in the case of publics - dependence on state dollars.

Pledged dollars and future returns on investments for the school mean very little to people who have been laid off due to budget cuts.

  14. One lane is open on each of the northbound and southbound sides of Columbia, and cross-traffic has finally resumed on University.  Still some paving to be done on the center of the north approach to the overpass, along with stoplight installation.

    Semester began 3 weeks ago.

There just seems to be a total lack of urgency.

On the positive side, all orange barrels seem to have been removed along 32nd Avenue.  Enjoy your reconfigured turn lanes!
