Opportunity cost. The shelf life of a pro athlete is short. Does LaDue want to wait until he's 25 until he signs his first professional contract? Sorry, I was probably vague. Kings have told LaDue that if he signs, they want him to develop in the AHL. So the question he's facing is whether to start making money as a 23-year old professional, but in the AHL for a year minimum, or does he want to play at least another year for his hometown team? I can definitely understand how he's struggling with the decision, particularly when a family member is pushing him to sign.

Coaching staff wants LaDue to stay. LaDue's dad is pressuring him to sign. Kings are also obviously pressuring LaDue to sign, but have also informed LaDue that they want him to develop in the AHL rather than going to the NHL right away. LaDue is conflicted.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. That statement was referring to Central Michigan. My recollection is that Central Michigan secured approval from the closest of the five Chippewa tribes in Michigan, but not the other four. Although UND secured approval from the closest Sioux tribe, the NCAA forced UND to also obtain approval from Standing Rock.* * I'm assuming the NCAA forced this issue, otherwise Wayne Stenehjem in less competent than we actually think.

I was just making a tongue in cheek joke. Though I might have to respectfully disagree on the characterization of the NCAA's policy or enforcement thereof as "defensible". I don't see much point in trying to eliminate allegedly racist mascots when the NCAA obviously allows some, but not all, schools to use them. If one needs to go, they all should go. Nor do I see any consistency in allowing some schools to keep their nickname with the approval of only one of a few tribes while uniquely requiring UND to secure approval of multiple tribes through a settlement agreement. Just my two cents. Feel free to bash away and criticize me.

Well, William and Mary were allowed to keep the "Tribe" as its nickname, so long as it removed a very racist set of feathers from its hostile and abusive logo: In unrelated news, Florida State still has a mascot of a Native American playing white face: Way to stomp out racist imagery from your athletic competitions, NCAA!

I guess I think of museums as a place where documents/artifacts/paintings are preserved (don't touch the art!), but to each his own. Not going to argue over semantics. But, I do like how UND preserved the Fighting Sioux jerseys in that hallway.

My two points were simply that (1) not "ALL" the locker room renovations went to putting up new logos (as someone falsely alleged earlier), but also to preserving/commemorating the Fighting Sioux nickname; and (2) the hockey team clearly has not moved on from the Fighting Sioux nickname as evidenced by preserving/commemorating the Fighting Sioux logo, and by the statements of pretty much every UND hockey player.

You don't need to keep backtracking, no one will blame you when you admit you're wrong. You: they spent millions on new logos! Reality: they spent millions on locker room renovations including preserving the Fighting Sioux nickname. You: they clearly moved on from the Fighting Sioux! So I completely proved you wrong by citing to an actual source, and your only response is, do you have another source? Nice job, buddy. But since you asked: But why are you dodging the real issue? That is, you claim that UND spent millions of dollars changing "ALL" the logos to the interlocking ND when, in fact, some of that money was spent on the Fighting Sioux logo. It seems pretty strange that the hockey team we "love so dearly" would pay money to put up all these new Fighting Sioux logos if the team, as you wrongly assert, "made it quite clear they are fine with the decision to move on" from the Fighting Sioux logo.

I agree with most of what you say. But I think Sioux fans, and particularly ones from Grand Forks, are a different animal, so to speak. This is just me speculating and guessing, but I am not aware of another nickname change that has caused anywhere close to the type of uproar/fighting/emotion/name calling/posturing/hurt feelings/etc. as I have seen with the University of North Dakota.

Dear Readers: The above post is completely disingenuous. Engelstad Arena renovated its locker room and meeting area to provide better facilities to its student-athletes and to obtain a recruiting advantage. UND did not renovate its locker room and meeting area for the purpose of switching to the interlocking ND symbol. The ND symbol is merely the consequence of UND retiring "Fighting Sioux" because of NCAA sanctions. So unlike UND and Engelstad Arena, the NCAA cannot sanction us fans for wearing Fighting Sioux gear. Sincerely, The Truth

But if you think the Grand Forks school district was so foolish to use "Roughriders" as a nickname for athletic competition in North Dakota, as you implied earlier, I would love to hear what you have to say about the school districts that created the Central Knights, Fargo North Spartans, Bismarck Demons, Dickinson Midgets, and pretty much every other high school in North Dakota.

Yes, you should have said that. But I can also "assume" that those individuals had previously wore the interlocking ND logo, the school seal, or any other type of University of North Dakota clothing that did not contain the Fighting Sioux logo. The "Fighting Sioux" ain't goin' nowhere.
