When I say Minnesota's NIL I'm talking about the collective that a group started there. It isn't directly with the school no. Minnesota's is called Dinkytown Athletes and I think they have another but I can't remember the name.

Gotcha. Sounds like Minnesota has several NILs started then.

Can anyone name one of UND’s?

Important to remember that NIL has only been around since July 1, 2021 though.

I think this is worth repeating.

For anyone not concerned about NIL, I fear that is the same mentality UND had when it neglected to transition to DI when a few other Dakota schools did.

Keep up with the joneses or expect to fall behind …

I don't think NIL is near as big of factor in college hockey recruiting as a lot of people think. The NIL focus is going to football and basketball primarily from boosters. At a place like Minnesota it finds it way to some hockey but I know Minnesota's NIL is still kind of getting its feet wet and not real solid yet. The top guys that are hyped coming in like a Cooley, Eichel, or thinking back to a guy like Toews or Kessel are probably getting NIL deals from hockey companies no matter where they go. If you think boosters at Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan State, Arizona State, etc. are focused on getting their money to hockey recruits you'd be disappointed to find out where hockey is on their priority list.

What do you mean “Minnesota’s NIL”?  My understanding is that NILs need to be independent (at least financially) from the school. This is why most people are concerned that NIL will serve to benefit the Big 10/larger schools the most because they pump out 50k grads a year.

That is why Michigan already has NIL programs like:

-the licensing and apparel agreement with the Brandr Group

-the Victors Exchange program that matches businesses with student athletes

    -the champions collective, see above

-Wolverine+, the sports subscription program that pays players.

Hell, every Florida Atlantic female athlete is getting paid by the Florida Panthers.

So the idea is not that FAU, Michigan, Minnesota, or even North Dakota would be paying their players.  Instead, we need someone with the initiative to set up an exchange where:

-Jeff Tellman pays Gaber to send out tweets every Friday night to promote Grinders after the Game

-Wes Rydell pays Kleven to star in a commercial promoting Rydell Chevrolet

-[current siouxsports.com user/business owner] pays [that recruit they’re really hoping UND gets] to promote their business.

Like the folks at Michigan, can anyone tell me what UND is trying to do to get ahead of the game in NIL?

But can you do better than all the first round draft picks BU has had in their lineup?

The conversation was about NIL …

But yeah, to answer your question and to bring the conversation full circle back to where it started with Aiden Park and Michigan, last year’s Michigan team had the NCAA record for first round draft picks, not any BU team.

  5. Since we're talking jerseys and prices, I'll make my yearly post that I'm still looking to purchase an authentic white Nike jersey (2002-2009ish)!

I'm happy to overpay.  You just need to PM me and name your price!  Also, I have a few white gemini Geo's I could add to purchase price or include in a trade ...

You’re saying MN kids who didn’t play SSM haven’t produced? I must be missing something.

Maybe he means straight from MN high school to college??!??!  If so, not many kids are successful with that route, so okay sure, I agree.

If not, I won’t go back all 20 years, and reasonable minds will disagree on this next one, but the Gophers did have a Hobey Hat Trick finalist (Ben Meyers) from the metro literally just last season…

Given the history pointed out here, asking Spicer to go to the USHL for a season was prudent for his development.

Dare I say Spicer’s decision to my eyes is imprudent.

Right?  If I recall correctly, seeing how similar their stat lines were during their last year at NTDP and how things have shaped out for all three of them since then is rather telling of how things could go for Spicer.

However, I think I’d roll the dice with a freshman Spicer over a senior Budy.

Like I said and corrected, I meant to say/should have said he would have been the youngest since Toews (although I missed Cag). It was meant to be a comp between Spicer and Toews. Sorry for the confusion.

David Toews might be the better comparison. (June birthday before his 18-year old freshman season).  Guys like D Toews, Brad Malone, Michael Forney, and Drake Caggiula all had birthdays within a month of Spicer’s before their 18-year old freshman seasons. Worked out for some; not for others.

Jonny Toews is a different ballpark.  He played his LAST game at UND as an 18-year old.

  9. 1 minute ago, stoneySIOUX said:

The point of my 18 year old comp was about him being the youngest player since Toews (I didn't realize Cag was younger) to come in to UND, making that talent rare. Schmaltz, Cag, Boeser are all good examples. No need to overthink this.

    I’m not.

We just wanted the kid, who would be the first 18 year old forward to come into UND since Jonny Toews, to play one more year in junior. Spicer made his decision.

A few people (myself included) were confused by your claim that Spicer would have been the first 18-year old forward at UND since Toews.

I was only pointing out that there have been numerous 18-year old forwards at UND recently.

Sorry, Cag was a week younger. I'm saying is one of the youngest. My point is that that age is typically reserved for players that are, with the exception of Hain, first round talent (yes, I understand Cag was undrafted). I'm saying I don't think Spicer is that player. We'll see.

I think everyone agrees with you that Spicer isn’t that player.  I think others disagree that being an 18-year old freshman is rare.

Hain was 18 (2 months older than Spicer); Caulfield was 18 (3 months older); Mishmash was 18 (4 months older). Those are just the most recent players coming from the NTDP, like Spicer would have.  None of them were first rounders, but all 18 year-old freshman.

But seeing where Hain, Caulfield, and Mishmash are at in their careers, perhaps Spicer could use another year.

Had Spicer come in next year, he'd be the youngest forward since Toews to play for UND. Spicer isn't Toews. He's not ready.

Not really though. Plenty of 18-year old forwards recently. Boeser, Hain, Schmaltz, Caggiula, and the list goes on. Moreover, Caggiula has a later June birthday than Spicer.

Not quite ... 1990 to 1998. (But 2016 to 2023 would be gettin' up there.)
Or are you saying if not in 2023 they tie (because 2016 to 2024 would be the tie).

The latter point was what I had intended to convey.  Took me by surprise by how much of a frozen four dry spell they’re currently in for BC standards.

Why'd the words "Boston" and "University" just pop into my head?

However, it is rather disturbing that Wisconsin and Boston College had descended rather quickly. If it can happen to those two, anyone is susceptible.

Crazy to think, but if Boston College does not make the 2023 Frozen Four, it will tie their longest drought in school history without a frozen four appearance.

Jack LaFontaine will see your one (1) game, and raise you by one (1), to two (2) games in the NHL.

9 goals against in 75 minutes!!!

Sure the BIG will get more of the high end young kids that are 1-2 year players but that creates its own set of problems, see: Boston University & Wisconsin's unbalanced classes.

SCSU had 3 freshman and 3 sophomores see ice time this season.  About as unbalanced as a team is going to get.

Man, this Frozen Four is shaping up to be a total nightmare unless Minnesota State wins it.

100%. The last 3 teams I want to see winning a title each season are:

    Minnesota (because it’s Minnesota)

    Michigan (9)

    Denver (8)

Also, UND really dropped the ball on making the 2022 frozen four a battle between old 1950s WCHA foes and NCAA heavyweights.  What a shame.

    Gotcha.

I guess like he said, it’s possible to be a lurker.  I’m on this site (and was before I had an account) multiple times a day for the past 15 years, but probably have less posts than most of you.
