  1. Actually, college hockey is not 'significant' in Juneau. The two Alaskan college hockey teams are a considerable distance from Juneau. Travel from Juneau to other parts of Alaska is burdonsome and expensive. The fact that you are comparing the UND Fighting Sioux to professional hockey teams is quite telling. Our program has produced almost three hundred professional hockey players. So, it's only natural to compare us to NHL teams. Our alumni are nearly always identified as being the product of the University of North Dakota's stellar hockey program in print and video. So, bro, it's not necessary to watch Versus to hear or see our alum.

When mom and dad took you to the Bahama's, your pilot was probably a UND grad. I've run into many a UND pilot in my travels. My Sioux gear invariably garners a 'Go Sioux' from them. I wonder if you get a similar response wearing your Bison gear from the cashier at Hornbachers?

Nationally, UND is more well known as a sports team than App St football, whether you like it or not. Football may be king in the US but NHL hockey isn't far behind and what we do in hockey on the college level and what our alum do on the professional level, puts our name and logo on National televion on a regular basis. No doubt about it...., bro.

My Pilot had a ring he showed me, Air Force Academy. Nice try. I'm aware that UND has an excellent aviation program, best outside of the academy correct? Do I care at all about who is flying my plane as long as he is qualified?

NHL comes after football, nascar(if we are going to count that), MLB, and NBA. Nice try again, tried pulling a fast one there! Hockey would be more popular if it was tv-friendly, but it is naturally harder for them to get viewers consistently when the puck is hard to see.

So I will say this one last time, In North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Canada, and parts of New England, UND will be more well known. Everyone else fell in love with Appalachian St. It doesn't matter if UND is better at their sport than App. St, it matters that App St. did something awesome in a sport that everyone from the pacific coast to the atlantic coast recognized. UND can beat #1 Boston U. or Boston College and its not going to be on ESPN for anything unless their was a sick goal. App St. beats Michigan and the rest is history. That's all it takes in football, knock off a big team on a big stage.

  2. In 2003 they beat Tulsa 49-10, Troy 48-7, LA-Lafayette 48-14, and Indiana 55-7. They could have named their score against NDSU that year, yet a mere three years later they were lucky to even beat them at all.

You are aware you are talking about probably the best Gophers teams of the past 50 years right? Thats like UND being happy with the fact that their team from '01 probably could have rocked the Sioux Falls team that beat them.

PS you just named 2 Sun Belt Teams, a conference USA team, and the worst team in the Big Ten......thats great that they beat those teams by that much.

    Back to UND vs. Fresno.

  3. The fact that NDSU had the audacity to still want to play UND while they were moving up to I-AA and UND was still in D2 shows how classless that program is and how desperate they were to beat the Sioux. They couldn't get the job done on a level playing field, so they stacked the deck in their favor and cried foul when UND didn't take the bait.

The analogy of what they did is this...

Say you get into a fitsfight with the same guy every day and get your a$$ handed to you each and every time (or at least 10 times out of 13). Then you go get a couple of buddies and challenge the guy to a 3 on 1 fight. Yeah, pretty lame.

I hated them when they used to beat the snot out of us in back in the '80s but at least I respected them at that time. They were a great team and they beat us repeatedly on a level playing field. But trying to stack the deck in your favor to get that edge back when the shoe is on the other foot is about the most dishonorable thing I can think of doing in that situation. I lost all respect for them after they moved up and expected us to continue playing them. That was a cowardly move IMHO.

Desperate to beat the Sioux.....you are insinuating that NDSU was moving up with the sole purpose of getting a leg up on UND. You sir, might be retarded.

NDSU is 4-3(FBS vs. FCS) in "3 on 1" fights, and thats when the Bison have been the 1. Beat Montana when we weren't D1 yet too. Your analogy blows. On your other threads you guys are saying how your D2 teams would have beat your nearly D1 team. So what is the difference in your D2 teams beating your D1 transition team now and playing our D1 transition team? I'm not following you at all Dave. I grew up in Jamestown, we played Valley City, we had 2-3 times more guys than they did and you never heard them complain about having to play us. I know this is college athletics and it is different but Jeez, its a rivalry game. You never saw Navy complain about going against Notre Dame once Notre Dame became a perrenial power and Navy slid into obscurity, they still scheduled them and had to wait 40 years for a win. The usual talent difference between Notre Dame and Navy was a LOT bigger than the difference between NDSU and UND would have been during the time NDSU was D1 and UND was not.

I'm not quite so sure NDSU tried to stack the deck in their favor, they were moving up regardless and made that perfectly clear. Sounds like a conspiracy theory to me. Do you also believe Elvis never died and Kennedy got shot from the Grassy Knoll? It is cowardly to ask a rival of over 100 years if they'd like to continue playing? Hmm....using your logic, UND is being cowardly 4 times then this year? or is it 3? I'm not sure how many NAIA and D2 teams UND will be playing...but apparently they are being cowardly that many times. I hope you take a good hard look at UND now. I fully expect a letter to be in the mail to Faison tomorrow telling him that it is cowardly to schedule below your division and you want only fully funded football programs from the FCS level. No more Drake, nothing less than what UND has.

    Rant Over.

I think it was Darrell who asked about the playoff situation assuming they ever meet, UND would get it if they were seeded in the top 5. Otherwise, NDSU would probably have it locked down because of attendence bids.

  4. It's only a matter of time, I think, before the folks at Moo U are addressing this issue. Sacred animals and nicknames like "Crusaders" (Holy Cross, anyone) are going to be next. Cattle are considered sacred to Hindus and they might think that using "Mavericks" as a team nickname would be disparaging towards their religion/beliefs. Larry Kraft used to say "mental mast#@$$" and that's exactly what the NCAA and their pinhead academician cohorts are engaging in.

:O So you mean we will have to be called FC North Dakota St? Or NDSU United?

  5. Yes, you are.

I have traveled all over the U.S. in the past five years (for work) and everywhere, from an island off Juneau, Alaska to NYC, NY, strangers have spoked to me about Fighting Sioux hockey when I'm wearing FS gear. In addition, invariably, when one of our MANY professional sports alumni, is interviewed by the national media, they give a shout out to UND. I have not doubt the University of North Dakota is better known nationally than Appalachia State.

    http://forum.siouxsports.com/topic/13949-the-power-of-the-sioux-jersey/

The two places you named were Northern cities, Juneau especially should know who the Sioux are because Alaska has a couple of college hockey teams and nothing else really to speak of. In case you were/are unaware, hockey has some significance up there. As for New York, they like their hockey too, Rangers, Islanders, Devils, Bruins, Philidelphia are all close by. A lot of hockey schools out there too. As for the many sioux alum you speak of, sorry bro but not many people watch Versus.

I for one, went on a cruise the year App St. beat Michigan and that was down in the Bahamas. I feel like that might be a more fair objective way of looking at this considering people from all of the country go on cruises. I saw zero UND shirts. I saw 3 Bison shirts, those belonged to me, my mom, and my dad. Several people asked who North Dakota St. was and when I brought up UND having a pretty good hockey school none of them were aware of them either. I saw App. St. shirts on several people and I asked them what it was like to live there, turned out none of them were from there, and they were all just talking because they noticed each other wearing the shirts.

Nationally, App St. football is more well known as a sports team than UND, whether you like it or not. Football is king in the US, and when you do what they did on National television, people remember your name.

  6. Take it easy on him guys. I'll admit I didn't like his earlier posts either but it takes balls to admit when you're wrong about something; especially when you're a bison fan posting on siouxsports forums. He confessed to not knowing all the facts behind this issue and I have respect for that. Keep in mind that we're Sioux fans and no one can obsess like we can so it's probably safe to assume that most of us know all the in's and out's of this issue better than any outsider/troll that may be posting on this board ;)

I guess Uncle Rico gives people negative reputation for admitting he was not aware of certain information when discussing something. Class act bro! Still watching Napoleon Dynomite? ;)

As for the gentleman who asked about my World of Warcraft and Halo crash....I do have CableOne, so if I had one of those games, I am sure my internet would crash constantly and I'd get upset as a result(not to mention i'd get my ass kicked and I'd probably get more mad). The reason I come on here is because I have a bit of time throughout the day when things get a bit slow, so I check out whats going on SS and BV.

Lots of haters....FSF86 here gives you guys a perfect example of how to handle fans from other schools, give them respect especially if they admit that they were wrong about something other than a score prediction between the two schools. GO BISON!

btw, if you guys want to be a dick to someone, go over to the EWU forum and give screaming eagle some crap for getting beat on by USD, he's been harassing us for months about the playoff game and won't come back to visit BV since the Vermillion Debacle.

  7. The Bison win one home playoff game in just about 20 years and everybody decides to come out of the wood work. I suppose it is easy to get super excited about your team when the bar has been set so low over time. The next big goal for you guys will be to actually sell out your first home playoff game in 20 years.

Haha the bar at NDSU is set high every year. I'd say right after UND's hockey coach, its far and away the most high-profile, high-pressure sports job in the state. As for not selling out the playoff game, I can't say a word back because that was a shameful display if you go by the numbers. Had it been in the Alerus it would have been the loudest far and away that it had ever seen. Still, if we make it this year with a good record(as in not 7-4) and get a home game or two, I'd expect the turnout to be much better, hopefully we will get a chance to see.

  8. You keep missing my point. You posted earlier - If it was that important to them, they would have elected officials based on their views of the nickname.

They did but the guy didn't follow through.

From what you guys have said he said, he never promised them anything. He said he'd consider it, which is what a politician will say about pretty well anything haha, pretty unfair. Perhaps since he knew his opponent was anti-nickname he made it sound like he was open to discussion. It is pretty sad that this is what politicians do but oh well. This doesn't affect me so I won't make a fuss of it. I was unaware that he was not vocally anti-nickname and I apologize for assuming he had made his stance clear in the past when really, he did not. Who knew that Native Americans would one day adopt white-man political styles of dodging direct answers. Granted, I doubt his supposed neither for nor against nickname is what got him elected but like I pointed out earlier in this post, I've been wrong on other parts of this discussion and so I probably could be on this one too.

  9. The NCAA policy says race-based images are naughty-naughty, thus the Nickel must be retired.

Too bad NDSU didn't play UND after 2003 but before Aug 15, 2011. Now the full force of sanctions are in effect. UND can't bring out the Nickel per the NCAA. It has to stay where it is, and in retirement. If that's a problem, take it up in Indianapolis, Indiana. I'm sure they'll listen. :silly:

Then perhaps I'll fund them making a nickel with a Bison on both sides....cause for the home-and-home series I would like to see scheduled NDSU would win both anyways ;)

  10. Yep. My point was to refute the claim that Standing Rock elected people who were against having a vote on the name. I think they elected a Chairman believing that he would allow a vote.

Well whether he mislead them or not, it doesn't matter. Time ran out. If Spirit Lake wants to acquire the logo which is what I have sort of gathered? Correct me if I'm wrong. That's cool, if they want to sell Spirit Lake shirts with the logo I don't care.

  11. While the Sioux may not be anywhere near where I would like them to be (ranked among the top 25 of I-AA) that does not mean they're awful. Objectively speaking you would have to admit that they're somewhere in between "top 25" and "awful". North Dakota is an average middle of the pack caliber I-AA team at this point in time. If you want to see what awful teams look like, just check out NDSU's two most recent opponents.

I'd consider picking Lafayette against UND. Middle of the pack is currently being pretty nice to UND. Losing to Idaho over the last two seasons by a combined 70-something points is not what middle of the pack teams do. Hell, NDSU's 3-8 year I think it was they played kept it relatively respectable against Iowa St. UND should probably be middle of the road in a year or so, but right now they aren't. 16 points against Drake is not good enough.

  12. We could have had it before but you guys would've rather play Wagner, and St. Francis at home. Your loss, our trophy!!

St. Francis was scheduled last season after the current #1 (hint, starts with Georgia, ends with Southern) backed out of a home-and-home. Would have been the biggest OOC game at home NDSU or UND have had since the jump up to D1.

  13. I say the only way for the Nickel to come out is when NDSU and UND are in the same conference, or GT grows a pair allows for NDSU to play UND every year. So if you look at those situations the Nickel will stay in retirement indefinately.

Probably wouldn't be in this situation had UND had the balls to play NDSU when we were in the process of moving up.

  14. So would you guys say the same thing if the trophy was sitting in Fargo?

Miami (OH) was the Redskins until 1997. They still competed against Cincinati for the victory bell. If UND wanted to keep it that is fine. Just seems like if the schools are playing that the trophy should play its own small part in the game. Not like the players need it, but it gives them that little extra motivation to get the job done. Also, it makes it fun for the fans to poke a little fun at the other side, granted, the trophy's time might be over. Its meaning has went down obviously considering its been awhile since the two teams played.

  15. So your solution is for UND to drop its biggest money making, attention getting sport and move to the NAIA? Spoken like a true Bison fan with penis envy.

Thats not my solution, far from it. I said if you guys are going to keep complaining and say how the NCAA is the worst thing since Adolf Hitler, you are free to leave. No one is making you be in the NCAA. Do I think that UND should drop hockey? No, it is your best sport. It makes the University a lot of money. But at some point, you have to quit complaining and deal with what has happened. I have never witnessed a group of adults acting like children who aren't getting their way before. It sucks for you guys that you are losing the name.

If I sign a loan agreement, on the promise that I will pay it back, and I dont pay it back, is it unreasonable for the bank to take my house? Yep, I might be pissed about it, but in the end, it is entirely my fault. Enough with the Bison hate, I'm speaking on behalf of every school who thinks its time to grow up and change the name, not because Fighting Sioux is "hostile and abusive", because it isn't. Change the name because the agreement was made which left UND in a situation where they at least were given an opportunity to try and keep the name, and they couldn't meet the terms and conditions of said agreement.

  16. Prove it? Well, for starters we can say that the members of the tribe signed a petition to allow a vote on the issue. Remember, it was the same petition that the tribal council threw to the side like a piece of trash. Does that constitute as proof in your eyes?

They elected the officials that threw it aside. This is entirely on the citizens who elected said officials. If it was that important to them, they would have elected officials based on their views of the nickname. From what I have heard, no proof that this in fact happened, a similar petition was signed by several Natives on the Rez to block a vote on the Sioux name. If that is indeed a fact(unknown, too lazy to look for where I heard it), then what do you do? Take off the kelly green glasses, and tell me if two groups sign petitions opposing one another, and the elected officials are against it, they should carry out the vote anyways.

  17. I would disagree with that. But I guess we'll never know.

I'd think, and I could be wrong, but people all know App St. for what they did to Michigan and to a lesser extent what they did for 3 years in the FCS. They might not know where it is, but they know what they did. They get plastered all over the TV every year during college football season. UND gets on espn when the Frozen Four tournement is on and people might recognize the name, but they don't get that same attention.

  18. UND needs to get ready for the Big Sky which is all about QBs/WRs/CB - much more wide open football.

UND could also consider the NDSU approach, not saying it would for sure work or not. But NDSU took it to Montana St. and nearly beat EWU with NCC style of play. Rough, tough, physical football. It is something to consider anyway. Big Sky is really wide open though, you are spot on with that assessment.

  19. Fresno State has too much speed and talented athletes for UND. However, UND will not be out-coached by Fresno. It is Fresno's first home game of the season so there should be a reasonable crowd.....after a long hot, boring summer Fresno fans are always anxious for the first home football game excuse to party. Those UND fans coming-out for the game I wish you a great time in Fresno. Fresno has a great variety of ethnic restaurants and the people are of mid-western culture and the the stereotypical Southern Cal glitz and yuppies or the Bay area liberals and eco-freak hippies.

In summary I don't see a snow-ball chance in hell UND defeating Fresno, but what the heck you never know? Ya'll losing to Idaho and by the amount you lost to Idaho (Idaho is a terrible, terrible D-1 team) makes me wonder if even the money is worth it.

From what the UND fans have been saying bro, is if one thing is certain, it is that Muss will get out-coached. Honestly though, he could coach a perfect game and I can't imagine it helping, Fresno will probably be looking to lash out on someone this week after that 4th quarter in Lincoln, can't imagine this being very pretty.

And yes guys, 1%! He is saying there's a chance!

  20. Its been that long since NDSU has seen the Nickel....wow, that was a long time ago....

Wondering when you personally last saw the Nickel? If it was recently, mind telling me where it is? No, Im not going to take it, honestly, having that trophy is the only thing that UND's football team has had going for them the past 7-8 years pretty much. ;)

On a more serious note, if the teams meet up in the playoffs, which mathematically should happen at some point, do you guys think they'd pull out the Nickel for old times sake?

  21. This barrage on davek being a pizza guy is pretty juvenile. Maybe it makes you feel like more of a man to keep it up.

Reminds me of the gopher hockey fan one year in the REA that, after the Sioux were piling it on, started yelling "i make more money than all you effers" and gave our section the double-Hakstol

Let me guess, you lived in the dorms at NDSU last year (johnson hall, maybe??) and spent all your waking hours monitoring siouxsports.com so you could report to bisonville.

I guess that gives you a leg up on the guy sitting in mommy's basement with a headset on eating cheetos and playing halo 3 on-line with one guy from Pakistan and another guy from Venezuela.

    Good for you.

Lived in the dorms back in '98. Reed hall. Pretty weird that a UND fan is feeling confident enough to try and call out a Bison fan on where he lived back when he was in the dorms? Close though. Off by 12 years and about 100 yards. I know the kid who you are referring to however, 344 is an interesting individual to say the least. I keep up on Bisonville and Siouxsports. Apparently, you also follow both sites as well. You did a great job describing 344Johnson, who according to BV has a whopping 744 posts. I would assume you have went on their Preposterous Statements thread. He has taken a liking to that one and yes, he pulls a Gold Mine of funny stuff some of the more.....ambitious UND fans have decided to put on a couple of SS.com threads, one in particular that I follow is the Facilities Masterplan thread. You went from sounding pretty knowledgable to looking just as goofy/childish as 344 does all through my interpretation of the data you were oh so kind enough to present to us.

Idk what barrage you are referring to? I think I made a joke about it the other day and probably one other time. I would not call it a barrage by any means and you have chosen to bring it up multiple days after Dave let it be known that he is indeed working in printing rather than the Pizza Industry (I'd assume Pizza Patrol or Domino's). I would also advise against eating Cheeto's and playing Xbox at the same time. Orange cheesy powder will make your controller look disgusting. The younger folks nowadays call it "live," not on-line, this isn't the 90's. It should also be noted that Xbox is generally speaking used by Americans and Europeans. The likelihood of playing with a Venezuelan and a Pakistani (especially considering the times a Pakistani would be playing) is extremely unlikely. Generally speaking again here, but rarely will you find only 3 people playing Halo against one another. They'd probably stop Xbox live support of the game long before it lost that kind of popularity.

Feel free to go take a seat son. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NDSU and UND should play a little ball. Even every few years, it'd give me a reason to stop in and take a look at the Alerus and see it for the first time since '03. Or do you think UND will have the retractable roof stadium completed by then?

  22. Yup...they're the guys on here with 37 posts and all the answers... :)

Typically when a group of people elects representatives, they choose someone who agrees with them on issues they deem important. For some folks, the issues are social programs and welfare systems. For others it is low taxes or good schools. If the "Fighting Sioux issue" was important to the people, they would have elected individuals who believed UND keeping the nickname was important. By electing individuals who were either against the nickname, or had decided that it simply was not important to them, the people of the Standing Rock rez essentially, whether informed voters or not, that they did not want the University of North Dakota to keep the name Fighting Sioux. You can say all you want about people signing some petition begging the counsel to allow a vote, the citizens of voting age had their chance to "save the name" and decided other issues were more important. Game. Set. Match. NCAA.

If you don't like it, that's understandable. If you guys are going to keep complaining about how the NCAA works, just remember, no one is forcing you to be a part of the NCAA. The NAIA might have a different policy on Native American logos. And if you are "above" the NAIA, feel free to move a semi-pro hockey team into Grand Forks and call them the Fighting Sioux. This would allow UND to drop the hockey team and with it, all the fans that weren't fans of the school, they were fans of a team of college guys called the Fighting Sioux. This would also allow the Spirit Lake people to be so "proud" of the nickname and quit throwing a fit.

  23. I'm a huge Notre Dame fan so of course I liked Notre Dame's retros. But having said that, I do kinda prefer the blue over the green. I thought Michigan's retros were really nice.

Edit: Exciting game to watch, but it stinks Notre Dame lost.

As a Notre Dame fan, I felt like !@#$ :( Nice Uni's to wear from time to time. Beat Michigan next year.
