  1. It's crazy how one freak play can change a team's fortunes for the worse. Think back to the UND-NDSU game from December of 2012. Brandon Brekke takes an elbow to the face, gets a concussion and is never the same. Prior to that game, Brekke had something like 24 double-figures scoring games. After that injury he had one, and couldn't play at all his senior year. What a shame.

In case people forgot what he was capable of when healthy: http://www.undsports...TCLID=205363657

That was a very interesting game with Huff only scoring 2 points and 3 sophomores led us in scoring in Brekke, Anderson and Schuler and Mitchell also had double digit points. You are right in the fact losing Brekke from that point on has changed what UND could have done this last year and a half. These 5 original seniors have played in so many big games together its rather amazing.

  2. So what you're saying is 3 of the top 7 in the rotation are out...Perfect.

Truthfully 3 of the top 6 may be out. I would rank our top six as Huff, Anderson, Webb, Nash, Traylor and Schuler. Sportsmatic the great social media pipeline and hearsay and contacts throughout UND has great info if you know where to look and listen. Hopefully by tomorrow night one or two of these guys can play.

  3. The size of the Dee makes it seem less filled than it actually is. But I guarantee that, with Weber playing, there will be a minimum of 6,500 for the late game and probably 4K+ to take in the matinee.

Wonder who the Weber fans will be cheering for during our game? Hopefully UND.

  4. I think Stefan has been shooting better but I think Schuler plays better defense and does more of the little things. Him and everyone else are going to need to step it up to make up for Schuler's absence.

Agree Schuler does all the little things that most people dont realize. If he played with more unselfish players in his career he would have put up huge numbers but it is what it is. Hope he is able to play. If not then Stefen and Antwi will need huge games.

  5. PLEASE START WEBB OVER HOOKER. HELLO COACH JONES.....THE OTHER TEAM HAS A TERRIFIC SCORER IN GARY WINSTON. HELLO TO COACH JONES!!!!! ARE YOU THERE!? PLEASE DON'T POSSIBLY BLOW THE GAME WITH YOUR TESTS AND TRIALS! HOOKER WONT TRANSFER IF HE DOESN'T START, DONT WORRY!

Heard Webb did not start due to late to a meeting or something. I also think Huff is due for a big game as well as Webb. Worried about Schuler's status as its not sounding good and we need him off the bench.

  6. Firing Jones at this point is not going to happen. I understand everything everyone is saying but look at was has happened the last 4 years. We were in the Great West for 2 years and we won both conference tournament championships. We were picked 6th or 7th last year in the Big Sky and finished 3rd and lost by 2 to Weber in the semi finals. This year we were picked 2nd in one poll and 3rd in the other poll and we finished 3rd in a much tougher conference than last year . Yes we've had a lot of disappointing loses but we have exceeded or matched expectations the past 4 years. Every team has experience and for the most part players just as good as ours. The problem with Jones as mentioned is he has not been able to mold players into team players nor control them in that manner or get them to understand the basic fundamentals of basketball. Maybe it's the type of players he has recruited that just don't get it and maybe he should start recruiting more fundamental players that can box out and shoot free throws and hit the open man. Last game we had 5 assists and 4 of those came from Webb. Hooker is now starting to drive and throw up shots over 2-3 players just like other selfish players have done for 4 years.

  7. Obviously Schuler is still hurt, does anyone know for sure?

I believe he could play but they are holding off till the tournament to make sure he is 100%. That may be a huge mistake tonight.

  8. Last game against Northern Colorado we got dominated on the boards at both ends, I think they out rebounded us like 40 something to like 22. This cannot happen again so we must box out. They also shot lights out against us and we shot very poorly so I don't see that happening again on our home floor. It will be another close one but I see us winning by 6-8 as the seniors win for the final time on their home floor. Go seniors.

  9. It was sure great to see us have an opportunity to win a game because of someone else's inability to simply turn and box out their man....usually that shoe is on the other foot.

Very good point. What's sad is I have talked to a few players over this year and asked if they work on boxing out in practice and the answer was no. The answers just puzzled me to no end being the fact it is costing us games. Our players simply do not know how to box out so with 5 coaches why would you not work on this.

  10. Well, Jones has this team looking like sh*t again.

    Congrats Coach

And I bet Jones will say in his post game interview that the team had a great week of practice and a good shoot around and doesn't understand why they played so poorly. Same words every game.

  11. Probably just sit around and look at their Great West Championship rings. I'm sure none of them want or try to get better... they don't care and just want better individual stats :silly:

I hate to say this but you can tell by watching certain players on how they re-act when they are not scoring and how they act on the bench it's only about individual stats for them. That is the major problem with this group of guys as it has been for 4 years. I see players standing and cheering on the bench and I see players when they come off the floor go thru the entire bench and give high fives and then the other ones ( individuals) that don't stand and cheer and when they are taken out walk straight to their chair and sit down, those are our captains by the way.

  12. Standings as of 2/18/14

    Weber St. 11-3

    Northern Colorado 9-5

    North Dakota 8-6

    Northern Arizona 8-6

    Montana 7-7

    Eastern Washington 7-7

    Montana St. 7-7

    Sac. St. 7-7

    Idaho St. 7-7

    Portland St. 6-8

    Southern Utah 0-14

Bolded teams are this weekends opponents.

There is absolutely no room for any kind of a hiccup with this conference so tight from the 3rd spot to the 10th spot. This is crazy the way the standing are. Any team that gets in can win the whole thing and its a shame this conference does not allow everyone in, still makes no sense to me.

  13. Nash is good on offense against a zone inside but he can't guard the 5 spot on the other end.

No one on our team can guard the 5 on the other team. At least with Nash and Traylor only at the 5 you get offense to off set what is given up on defense.

  14. I'm glad so many of you are enjoying the win? Good grief, even when we win...its not good enough. You must all be delights to be around. I could see you win the lottery but find something wrong with it. When I was at the game, I turned to my seat neighbor and said you watch, people will be upset about slowing it down at the end, but if they played fast at the end and didnt use the clock and ended up taking a bad shot, people would be complaining then as well. I guess life is pretty easy when you can have both sides of the argument. Antwi, has earned his time. The thing I've noticed with him since he's been here before his ability to hit a shot is that he is first a strong and quick on ball defender. Webb had some tough turnovers today, no getting around it, but he was in there because he is strong enough to battle Jamar, grab a rebound and he also had 2 blocks. Steffan and Schuler were in for the ability to hit a foul shot, they just didn't have the ball when Montana fouled. Rare is a game going to be perfect with this bunch...I'm surprised after four years that it surprises anyone. Its a very simple formula when this team wins, and it has nothing to do with our offense, who is scoring, or we play against the zone. It's all about whether we hold a team under 70 points- if we defend and hold a team under 70, this team always has a good chance to win.

I think somebody mentioned in the Idaho State thread that Nash should never play when a team zones us. But I guess people's memories are short because he scored 21 against that same ISU zone when they played in GF and he had most of his baskets today when??? That's right, when Montana was in a zone.

Also we didn't beat this D today because we could shoot- we were just 2 of 12 from 3, but because we kept attcking the basket whether Montana was a zone or man.

It was a good win but dont you agree the coaches almost blew this one. Also, no way Antwi and Nash are better defenders than Stefen and Schuler. Both these play straight up and always move over and stop other players all the time. They are constantly guarding their guy and others if you really watch. Antwi fouled a guy before an inbounds which is totally stupid with no time running off. Nash played great against the zone but like mentioned above that came from the 5 spot. The rotation pulling 3 guys out and 3 in at the end with who they were doing it with made no since cause they scored every time on a drive at the end and if they missed the guys we had in could not shoot a free throw once they got the rebound. Just didn't make since to me at all. The complaint is the rotations make no sense.

  15. Jones did his best to lose this game. First we had a 10 point lead in the first half and Montana went into a zone and we had the wrong players and Jones

did not make the changes for the zone and our lead went from 10 to losing by 4. We put in our shooters and team players and they regained the lead to 6. Then in the 2nd half he did not sub after the 12-13 minute mark like he has done the past 3-4 games and left those 5 in and slowly the lead slipped away once again. Why he does not have our best defenders and free throw shooters in at least the last 4-5 minutes blows me away. He has Antwi, Nash and Webb in for defense and puts Stefen and Schuler in to just input the ball in the last 2 minutes. Schuler and Stefen are much better defenders and FT shooters than Antwi, Webb and Nash but they are in for defense and Schuler and Stefen only to inbound the ball. Jones rotation in these games makes absolutely no sense and who is playing when. You cant continue to have the same 5 guys in the final 12-13 minutes and expect them to have the energy to play.

  16. Must win at home today. Last time against the Griz one player basically beat us with Jamar scoring 33 points, half his points came from the line. Last time I believe Huff was guarding him and maybe this time Jones will put our best straight up defender on him and I believe that should be Schuler. He may not be the quickest but he plays between the defender and the basket better than anybody on this team and he boxes out. Montana just came off a loss and they are in the same boat as us with a much needed win.

  17. You know let's just take Hooker out when he led us on a run and hit a big three. Seems logical right? Jones did a horrific job subbing today.

I also thought the rotation was horrible and its been like that for some time. I'm sorry but Calcaterra and Salmonson should not be in the rotation at all, they bring no threat of offense, no rebounding and no defense. I believe at one point last night we had 4 point guards on the floor so basically 3 players were out of position at once. At this point the rotation should be Traylor and Nash at the 5 only, Huff, Schuler and Stefen rotate the 3 & 4 with Webb, Hooker and Anderson rotate the 1 & 2. Thats our 8 strongest players for the stretch run and get ourselves into the conference tournament. The rotation is just all over the place and it seriously shows many times throughout the game.

  18. Defense, rebounding, and shot selection are three glaring inconsistencies of this team. I can only hope Jones has been stressing defensive and rebounding drills, with threats of riding the pine if you don't. If you don't find your man and box him out, and he gets the rebound and an offensive put back, you're coming out. Simple as that.

I agree once the shot goes up find your man and box him out. However, there are many times in a game a 3 point shot comes hard and long off the rim and even if you have a good box out these rebounds are hard to get cause they go over your head. We have a couple of players that box out very well but balls find a way over their heads long and the opponent gets them.
