  1. Not surprised at the halftime locker room blowup, par for the course. Even less surprised that the player started the 2nd half and there were zero repercussions.

What kind of a message does that send to the rest of the team?

I heard about the locker room incident and a lot of that happened in the prior 4 years with no ramification against the player.

  2. Gotta be at place of conf champ. Anywhere else, attendance lacks big-time.

Agree.  The way it currently is when the home team plays the crowds are good and the other games which do not involve the home team the stadium is empty except family and friends.  Neutral site every game will be basically empty because it's not the type of conference that will draw local people to watch.

  3. I said it last night and will say it again, he just isn't likeable guy.  That is my opinion but I feel others may share it as well.  The way he carries himself on the sideline and interviews.  The closest comparison is Mussman.  The UND fanbase did not like Mussman because he was obnoxious and never cared to engage with them.  He came off arrogant but had nothing to be arrogant about.  Attendance dwindled much the same as his recruiting did.

Look at the head coaches that NDSU has had in MBB - Tim Miles, Saul Phillips and now Richman.  All are unbelievably likeable guys that the fanbase can rally around and love cause they are so witty and passionate, out in the public, etc.  Jones is none of those, much like Mussman.

Bubba is loved by pretty much everybody because he is honest and sincere as the day is long.  Whether he will win or not remains to be seen.  Brewster is a likeable guy, funny in interviews, smiles alot, etc.  Roger Thomas had it.  Dale Lennon had it.  The Rev. Richie Glas had it.

Once again, this is my opinion but I have been around UND athletics for 30+ years now.  I will be around long after Jones is gone.  It isn't hard to see which coaches have it and which don't based on history.

I agree that Jones appears this way on the outside but I must say I believe it is because of his intensity he wears on his shoulders during and after a game.  I have been around Jones quite a bit over the past several years and I've never met a person that has a love for basketball more than this man.  His mind is always centered around basketball and you can see his intensity on the sidelines as he runs, jumps up and down the sidelines for the entire 40 minutes.  He deserves a few more years with the recruits he has coming in to see what he can do with the upcoming talent.  To be honest he was brought in under extreme difficult circumstances with the transition and brought in a young class that won 2 championships and a best ever placing in the Big Sky for a first year team and then a loss in the championship game with a very depleted roster.  We may very well be able to find someone better but I believe he's done a good job with what he's been dealt.  If this style of play and wins/losses continue at the current rate then I agree its time for a change but for now I think he needs a couple of years to see what he does with the talent that he has coming in.

  4. Why is Coleman not playing more?   He has had 4 straight solid games and is only averaging 14 minutes/game.  He is averaging about 7 points/game and only playing 14 minutes and shooting almost 60% from the floor these past 4 games and was 2nd on the team in rebounds last night only playing 14 minutes.  Project his numbers playing 25-28 minutes a game and he would be leading this team in several categories.  I also wish DeRouen would shoot a shot in balance, his shot is always off balance fading and kicking his legs out and never looks set.  Still do not understand Jones rotation as the players are fading at the end of so many games.

  5. Very good first half,  need to take advantage of this EWU team with their 2nd best player (Jois) in street clothes.  Jois is a beast down low and always gives us lots of problems.  After hardly playing at all the last game for some reason Antwi has 10 first half points and has been a great spark off the bench.

  6. Very good win and it was nice to actually see the other team miss a ton of free throws to give us the win instead of the other way around.   The defensive pressure in the 2nd half was the best defense I have seen in yours out of UND and made the difference in this one.   Play like this Saturday and we have a chance against EWU.

  7. Nobody on this year's team is even close to Huff. Even on off-nights, Huff excelled at defense.

Huff excelled on offense but was not good on defense.  He gambled all the time for his steals and when he did not get a steal it was an easy 5 on 4 for the other team.  He did not know how to play straight up defense as he gave up almost as many points as he scored.  Just cause he stole the ball every once in a while and made a dunk does not make you a good defender.  Watch the players on this years team,  that's how you play in your face defense.

  8. Yeah youre comparing "year 4" of those players to "year 1" of these players.

True but not true.  These current players most of them have been in college games for several years either JUCO or transfers so its not like they are freshmen plus Hooker, Antwi, Hobaugh, Benton, Salmonson, Calc, Tyler , DeReon have been around for several years.  The class of Huff, Anderson, Webb, Schuler and Brekke proved to be good D1 players at the mid major level and as we all know if not for injuries and less selfish play could have really been good. In fact these 5 as freshmen when 3 of them currently sit in the top 10 all time scoring for freshmen ( Huff, Webb, Schuler) could beat this team today easily.  I do agree the current teams puts more effort into their defense but they could not stop Huff and company from scoring a bunch.  The past 5 would be better at every position in my opinion except one would be close.

  9. Yes, because he was such a rebounding machine in the last game--(1)?  Hate to tell you this, but all 3 of our guards have been bringing something 2 the table, and need to be on the floor.   De Rouen, is energetic and if watch closely, he knows what we are suppose to be doing on D, not just him, but the entire team. Defensively we are much better team when he is on the floor, because of his on ball pressure up top.   When he's out, that's when our D has looked the shakiest to me.  Hooker, has been playing well since conference play started, you can't take him out.   And Tyler, has shown what he can bring.   Against Marquette, SDSU, and Northern Colorado, he has shown that he gives a multidimensional scoring threat, even in a game he struggled to score himself, he showed the ability to get others involved with 6 assists v. Montana State.

Maybe we should be talking about swapping Coleman for Nash? But at the same Coleman sometimes he too can get lost defensively  which basically in that swap is a wash. I'm not blaming Coleman as that's not unheard of when you come to a new program.

So you don't think a change is necessary in our starting lineup being the fact we have been out rebounded badly in every game playing 3 small guards

a majority of the minutes.  Losing 3 straight at home alone justifies a change to bring a taller lineup as we are losing close games and a rebound here or there could have made a difference.  Yes, each guard brings something but they can all be played 28-30 minutes in a rotation so they are strong at the end and also gives us a better chance or rebounds with guys like Coleman or Shields.

One more point, UND is 2-7 with the 3 small guard line up and out rebounded in every game.

  10. I would like to see more of the Shanks-Nash-Coleman-Tyler-Hooker lineup. I also think Shields should get more minutes.

Agree,  out rebounded badly again.  Another game we could have won if we just matched them in rebounds.  Its the small things ( 3 small point guards) costing us 3-4 games already this year.

  11. Birnstine not as light as Nash.  Birnstine can play the 3 or4.  If UND can recruit a bruiser to get rebounds Birnstine could play the 3.  Taking a kids free ride not good PR and could hurt recruiting.... The staff made a mistake on the  kid live with it.  Plus redshirting him kept him around for 5 years instead of 4.  Maybe Shane will graduate or give up is scholly... Being that he averaged 9 ppg and was only 2nd team all conference in high school  Jones should not have redshirted him and let him finish in 4

I hope everyone is right about Birnstine but he did nothing at Denver to warrant all this excitement.  I guess I am missing something.

  12. So I have refrained posting here for months but I feel the need now. I am Josiahs father & barnstormers coach and coached both Josiah and Tez Seales as well as McDermott in MS. Josiah struggled offensively in his transition in the 1st 8 games or so but avgd 5 rbs & 2.5 stls or so as a starter and is the most versatile defender on the team capable of guarding 1z4 positions. The coaches have decided to go 3guard and severly limit josiahs monutes as of late. Jo is wotking hard and being a great teammate encouraging his teammates despite knowing he can help in areas of struggle, defense, rebounding, moving the ball, and making open shots. The ball movement early in the year wasn't nearly as fluid as it is now so Jo didn't get many opportunities except in the home games due to lack of defensive pressue but he showed when there is ball movement he can make open looks. Jo will continue to work hard, be a good teammate, work hard in class and be ready if his number is called. SWSiouxmn if u want to continue to down him feel free. I can't speak to Collins but with all due respect to McDermott a former player who has worked very hard to earn his scholly he will most likely redshirt next year. He would tell you he is not better than Jo right now. Tez would tell u the same thing, tez told me after his visit, jo lit him up and it was making him mad. Tez will play and play a lot next year, his handle will give him success in the ball screen offense.

Thank you for your post and honesty. I have said it many times that I do not understand why Jones is starting 3 small point guards and continuously getting out rebounded by even the worst rebounding teams in the league ( which I guess makes us the worst).  You son has the height and athletic ability to help us out in those areas which are much needed.  From what I have seen he also has a very nice shot but if a shooter is not given the ball or reps its hard to get into any rhythm.  I sure hope Jones and company get their heads out of their **sses before long so we can salvage something out of this season.  I hope Josh keeps his head up as he can be a very big asset to this team.  Jones is for some reason in love with playing his point guards almost every minute of the game and by the end of the season none of them will have any legs underneath them.
