  1. I was surprised and disappointed not to see more of Coleman last night. I believe we should start Hooker, De Rouen, Coleman, Nash and Shanks. Estan Tyler seems like a good option coming off the bench rather than a starter.

I am really excited for what our guards are going to look like next year. Another year of experience for everyone and throw in Geno and Sealers, that sounds like a talented group of guards. It would be nice if we could add a bruiser down low to compliment Shanks.

Put 10-15 pounds on either Cashman or Richman and they could possibly be bruisers especially Richman cause he already appears to have a descent size body on him.

  2. its not the coaching that is getting us killed on the boards its the 3 point guard lineup that is killing us...what is so wrong with two point guards (kind of like last year with webb and anderson) and josiah at the three, nash at the four and shanks at the five...so hooker, terrell, coleman, nash and shanks...so six five, six eight, and seven foot at the three four and five....

We have a winner.  3 point guard lineup all 6' and under is insane.  Sac State came in as either the worst or 2nd worst rebounding team in the league and we still couldn't out rebound them at home.  Coleman needs more time at the 3 and more of a guard rotation so they are strong at the end of the game.  Very impressed with Shanks last night so lets try going very big sometimes with Shanks at the 5 and either Salmonson/Calcaterra at the 4.  We got a lot of different looks we could throw at teams but continue to settle for something that's not working.  This year will continue to be a struggle to win any games but I do like what the next 2-3 years could bring.

  3. Need to get back to the team ball we played early in the year vs. SDSU. Nash has to do more than camp out at the 3 pt. line. Drive, mid range jumpers, anything besides stand around.

Frustrating thing right now is we do nothing to force another teams bigs to play D. They score on offense and run down the court and stand either under the hoop or at the three point line.

Also I feel that Cashman needs minutes. If we aren't redshirting him, don't waste this season.

Any mention of Crandall?  Somebody has got to know why he is not playing based on how well he did in pre-season.

  4. What's the deal with Coleman? It looks like he didn't play at all last night. Also, it appears Benton hasn't played since the Dickinson St. game. Is he injured, or has it just been coach's decision?

This entire starting lineup and substitutions is goofy.  Starting 3 point guards all 6' of under and Nash as the 4 that doesn't know how to box out and it doesn't matter who you start at the 5.  We will get out rebounded horribly every game and that will be the difference in several games this year that will cost us.  Time to try something different and don't start 3 point guards with only one sub being Antwi.  Maybe go big with Nash at the 3 and Calc at the 4 and Shanks at the 5, who knows or something like this.  Coleman needs time and Hobaugh has proven he deserves to be in.  Please tell me what happened to Crandall?  I thought he was playing great in pre season and then suddenly nothing about him.  If he is that good there is something more than we are red shirting him.  Is it grades or and undisclosed matter?  We didn't red shirt Shields or Cashman and all they are doing know is watching from the front row.

  5. Got destroyed on the boards and got outscored by 20+ on the inside.  DeReon, Hooker and Antwi had very good games and once again Nash did not show up.   Shields had a good game Thursday but once again looked so weak tonight and scored 0.  I realize he was in foul trouble but at 7' had no impact at all when he was in.

  6. Dustin and Lenny were huge off the bench and sucking up minutes when Tyler and De Rouen were in foul trouble.

Good to see Shanks have a nice game offensively, and felt that he defended the rim quite well.  Hopefully he can snag a few more boards as well.

On to Montana, would be huge to pull that game out and be 2-0 with 3 home games upcoming.

Agree Hobaugh and Antwi were huge in this game.  Really like how hard Hobaugh plays every time he gets in.  Actually would like to see him start at the 3 and have a better roatation at the 1 and 2.  I mentioned in an earlier post that Shanks appears weak as I still thinks he needs so much work in the weight room but he played very well in scoring 12 points and altered a lot of shots today.

  7. Just listened to the Jones presser for the week and he hinted that Shanks could.. could play this Friday, provided if grades are turned in and reported.  Worse case its the conference opener against Montana State.

Didn't realize that Hooker and De Rouen have only practiced 3 times in 3 weeks due to their injuries.  Yikes

Also caught this about Hooker and DeRouen.  So if they are not practicing why does Jones keep playing Hooker so much with hardly a break.  Play Tyler and Antwi more and give Hooker more breaks so he is fresher.

  8. With that said. The women could beat the men's team. No joke...

Lets not get rediculous.  Last night for some reason they could not shoot, could not guard and could not drive.  Antwi is the only outside threat and yet he only plays 20 minutes or less a game.  He needs more minutes as no guard on this team is any better than the other and yet some play 35+ minutes and Antwi plays less than 20.  Makes no sense.

  9. I only hope our rotation changes as we go into the Big Sky because if it continues like it did tonight we are going to lose many games in the closing minutes.  We have Hooker, DeReon, Tyler and Antwi basically all point guards.  With these 4 guards we can run hard at any team in the Big Sky if we rotate.  We have Hooker , DeReon and Tyler in the game at the same time and Hooker was gone by the 10 minute mark of the 2nd half.  Start Hooker, DeReon at the 1 and 2 with Coleman at the 3 and Nash at the 4 and Calcaterra at the 5 and run.  Bring in tyler and Antwi at the first break and run them hard with Hobaugh at the 3.  I see no difference in Hooker, DeReon and Tyler as far as talent so not one of these need to play 36+ minutes and have no gas at the end.  To be honest I would rate them in this order of DeReon, Tyler and then Hooker.  We have speed and depth at posiitons 1 thru 4 so why not use them all and run.  Once Stefen is available it even adds more depth and speed so he can be at the 3 and move Hobaugh to the 4 to back up Nash.  Maybe I'm way off but after watching tonight our rotation sucks.

  10. Antwi shoots lights out against lower division teams and in intersquad games.

Free throws are still a struggle

Nash and and Crandall were probably co-MVPs of the day

Kraig Shields is going to be a special player as he grows into the college game.

Cashman looks really good... but the mental side of the game is still a challenge for him. He is out of position a lot of times.

de Rouen shows flashes of skill but it's very inconsistent He plays with emotion but sometime is overcome by it and makes silly mistakes.

Coleman played good defense and stepped back and knocked down a couple threes. Didn't stand out other than that.

James Richman is a big North Dakota kid that is doing his best to keep up .... he could grow into a solid off-the-bench player later in his career.

Hooker played ok but seemed to be frustrated by some of the physical play especially when matched up against Crandall.  When he and Crandall played on the same team, the offens  really clicked.

Other than that ... not much to say. I always find it hard to take much a way from these early season intersquad match-ups.

Salmonson, Shanks, Tyler  did not play.

Did Stefan play, you didn't mention him?

  11. I am interested to see what happens at the 5 position. The offensive production from that position was really lacking last year without Brekke, and I would not be all that surprised if Cashman gets a serious look to possibly even start.

The 5 position once again will be our weakest spot and I don't really see any of them doing that much to help but the good news is I believe we have 4 at that position so maybe one of the four can develop into something.

  12. Sporting news doesn't know $#!+

Have to agree with you , however if an outside person looked at what we lost and that these seniors we lost have carried this program for 4 straight years I would probably come to the same result.  I don't see us doing nearly as well as the last 2 years in the Big Sky but don't believe we are 11th.

  13. I can't wait for next years team because Huff won't be on it. Feel like there will be more team chemistry and passing.

Watch what you ask for. We are losing a 2000 pt scorer and 2 other 1000 point scorers in Anderson and Webb and Schuler with over 850 points with missing over 15 games. No way our offense will be better next year but the bright spot is I believe our defense will be better overall and if someone can teach these players to box out. I think we will really struggle to make it to the conference tournament next year but I hope I am wrong. I kinda afraid Hooker will try to force the ball a lot like Huff has done and hopefully Jones will control this. We will definately not see many high flying dunks like Huff and Nash has provided for us this year, that I will miss.
