Covering sexual organs in a civilized society seems to be a good thing as to not expose minors to such things.

I can’t speak to the specific history of why modesty is written into our laws.

So, in other words, we are wearing something to protect others.  Does that align with personal freedom?

I also have looked at what the experts are saying and there seems to now be consensus(up until recently it wasn’t so clear) that wearing a mask is a choice I’ll make for myself, but I also believe that each person is free in this country to make their own decisions. That is where we seem to differ. I’ll do what I need to do to protect myself and my family and everyone else can do the same as far as I’m concerned.

Why am I required to wear clothes in public?

Did you wear a mask before March?

No, I started when the experts coalesced on that being our best bet for slowing down the virus.  And they were right, as everyone (incl Trump) now realizes.

Delaying the impacts of COVID by using face masks allows researchers to come together on best plans for treatment.  We’ve already seen that better and more informed decisions which have very likely helped to lower the death rate of those who are hospitalized.

F*** Hugo's.  Had a chance to do something special by doing the right thing (i.e., nothing), and took the easy way out.

This is lunacy, plain and simple.

I would rather they require customers to wash their damn hands before handling produce.  At least that would have some merit.

    You must hate Trump now

Actually most people have an issue with using the word "retard" or any abbreviated form of it (and have for the last 30+ years).  That goes for many people on the right and left.  It is just as offensive to someone that is developmentally challenged (and their parents) as a racial slur is.  Try to show a little more maturity in your conversation.

I believe that Hayduke started with that language in response to the quoted post and others.  Now, SIOUXFAN97 does seem to be about 10 years old in intellect, so it isn’t necessarily a smart move to craft responses to the dregs of society.

What were the criminal cases you were referring to earlier, the ones that would go away?

    Maybe this will help: https://bipartisanpolicy.org/blog/decriminalizing-illegal-border-crossing-what-does-it-mean-an-explainer-of-civil-vs-criminal-immigration-enforcement/

In late 2017, the Trump administration introduced its Zero Tolerance Policy, which encouraged DHS to refer all illegal crossings for prosecution and ordered DOJ attorneys to accept and prosecute these referrals. Although this policy had similarities to Operation Streamline, the measures targeted a different group of individuals arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border. Whereas Operation Streamline prosecuted single adult Mexican males who attempted to reenter the country illegally after being deported, Zero Tolerance targeted and separated thousands of families seeking asylum in the United States, as Customs and Border Protection referred adults to DOJ for prosecution while placing their accompanying children in Department of Health and Human Services custody. President Donald Trump suspended the policy in June 2018 in response to widespread criticism and litigation against the measure.

Ah, but decriminalization is NOT open borders.   Deportations under administrative law would continue.  What you wouldn’t have is criminal cases, which was the root of the problem with splitting immigrant families up.

  8. The reason why people on the left are so comfortable calling Trump-supporters cultists is precisely because of things like your post.  You parrot talking points that I’m sure you got from the right-wing media without any critical thought at all into the issues.

Open borders - can you point to the legislation or party platform calling for this?  Sure, there are thought pieces around, but this is actually a Libertarian, small-government argument.

Non-citizens voting - again, point to the legislation or party platform.  There are some places in the country that allow non-citizen voting in municipal elections, but that is not being proposed at state or national levels.

Felons voting - the main thrust of this has been regarding those that have served their sentence.  In FL the voters overwhelmingly voted for this (including many Rs), but the state legislature has gone against the will of the voters.  Some think that incarcerated felons should be able to vote.  Somewhere along the line we as a country decided that was a right that could be taken away.  Not everyone believes in that.

So, to your main point, there is a lot more depth to these issues than you make it seem.  And the idea that Democrats are importing people to make them D voters is indeed “fake news”.

You misunderstand again, I didn’t say Biden would win because illegal voters

if Democrats win they want open borders, for non citizens to vote, for felons to vote

why is this, because they would be democrat voters

i guess instead of illegal aliens we need to call them undocumented democrats

and there you go again calling me names, I’m a citizen and not a cult dude, understand?

Bars, salons, fitness centers in AZ or CA and such.  Is that what's it pertaining to?

I don't know.  The businesses that are shut down are mainly in the same types of industries and have a common denominator of being places where people typically congregate inside in close proximity to each other.  There is no inherent bias against small businesses.

There has been some theorizing out there that any future rescue attempts should be very focused on the industries that are hurting the most, such as bars & restaurants and entertainment.  Obviously, that also trickles to commercial real estate.

What I don't understand is the call by some to lower the payroll tax.  The big problem right now is unemployment, not the people who have jobs.

  10. Another big poll released today from NBC/WSJ.  https://assets.documentcloud.org/documents/6989473/200356-NBCWSJ-July-Poll-7-15-2020-Release.pdf

This one is interesting because it has the congressional breakdown of only +4 for the Ds, and that would possibly put the House in play.  However, it is also Biden +11.

This is the main poll Q in my opinion, and aligns with other polls.  50% have completely ruled out voting for him.

(ASKED IF NOT SUPPORTING DONALD TRUMP)

Q10A Even though you are not supporting Donald Trump now, what are the chances that you might support Trump in this year's presidential election--is there a fair chance that you might support him, a small chance, just a very slight chance, or no chance at all you might support him?

+ Fair chance you might support .................. 1

    Small chance ............................................. 3

    Very slight chance ................................... 6

No chance at all you might support........... 50

    Not sure ................................................... -

    Currently supporting Trump....................... 40

What hospital has coded deaths fraudulently as covid19 to generate revenue?

Yeah, that conspiracy theory has been perplexing.  There is little upside and a ton of downside to committing that kind of fraud.  I’m sure across the country someone has done it, but there is no evidence it is widespread or exists at all.

I'm not a poll follower or expert, is this poll highly regarded in that community?

Pretty good.  538 gives them a B+.  Little bias either direction.

I'll preface by saying I have been wearing a mask when in public.

Why has it been so difficult for our public health officials to come to a consensus on this topic?

Fauci has said masks don't help, Osterholm has said he actually opposes masks as they give people a false sense of confidence. Even the surgeon general told us not to wear masks in March. Now, some health officials have said they purposely lied to us so people wouldn't hoard N95 masks and save them for the medical community, but that just builds further distrust.

If I can ask you as someone who I assume, based on conversations in the past week, leans left. Why are you so pro-mask when even the experts on this topic can't come to a clear consensus?

I think that there was a lot of confusion early on (Feb/March) which contributed to a very mixed bag of messages about mask-wearing (and surface contamination for that matter).  When the hoarding started, I'm sure there was a level of concern about health professionals needing PPE, so given some prior research on the flu and the run on masks, the message was that the general public didn't need them.  But once it was apparent how transmissible COVID was in closed settings, the recommendations changed.  It was April when the CDC recommended mask wearing and everything has been pretty consistent since then.  I'm not sure about Osterholm's comments, but he has been pretty alarmist so I take that with a grain of salt.

  14. Interesting data from the new QU poll  https://poll.qu.edu/national/release-detail?ReleaseID=3661.  They are good at polling, not so much with winning hockey National Championships :D

Top line, Biden +11.  Not different from many other polls.

    Good for Biden:

    • Biden at or above 50% in all age ranges.  That is a stunning reversal for the older set.  Trump's rating in the 65+ crowd is 50% Disapprove Strongly.  Maybe the COVID impact?
    • 12% of people say they haven't heard enough about Biden to rate him favorably or not
    • Do you think that Donald Trump is honest?  62% no/34% yes.
    • Biden takes the lead (inside the Margin of Error) on the question of who will better handle the economy.

    Good for Trump:

    • Biden only up 7% among Hispanics!  That's much closer to where Bush Jr. was if I remember correctly.
    • 38% say they haven't heard enough about the Tara Reade accusations to form an opinion
    • Biden honesty question:  37% yes among the youngest, 54% yes among the oldest.  Definitely the Bernie impact.

I don't know.  We seem to have some pretty adamant anti-maskers in this thread!

However, agree that overall this isn't going to make a dent in Walmart's bottom line.

Yes, with a big part of that due to difference in how states are reporting it, which won't change with it being sent to Health & Human Services and then hidden from everyone. At least the data was semi-transparent with the CDC as people could see the source data and try to figure out what the differences are. Is government transparency not a good thing or did I miss a memo?

But since that isn't working perfectly, I guess the next step is to not let anyone see it? I guess that will cut down on questions about the numbers.

I'm not sure how much the HHS/CDC thing is going to affect the public data.  Most people/media aren't using the CDC data because it is time-lagged.  Places like the COVID Tracking Project are scraping the data directly from the state websites.  Now, if the states all of the sudden take their information down (like FL did for hospitalizations for a while), then I would be suspicious.
