  1. The gap between James and Reyes is just amazing. James is simply a step too slow to be a good or efficient Safety at this level. Changes the whole defense and limits what can be done as far as stunting. I have no problem with how Schmidt called the game. Certain things need to be accounted for in order to send any of your backs after the QB. One thing would be trust in your safeties to be just that, a safety against a big play. Yesterday our safeties gave no indication they were capable of taking risks.

Absolutely. Without Reyes, Rich, and Greely, the talent deficiency on the defense is significant. The defense just couldn't execute yesterday, which is on the players out there as much as it is on the coaches. William James is not a DI safety and that showed yesterday. Hopefully Reyes and Studsrud are back in the lineup against Weber State, because those two make a big difference.

  2. Very frustrating loss yesterday. You hate to blame a loss on injuries, but when you have little depth and you lose your starting QB (who is better than Bartles, plain and simple), it's too much to overcome.

UND will get better with depth over the next couple of seasons considering how impressive the recruiting has been with Bubba. So, in the short-term, it's crucial that impact players like Reyes, Greely, and Studsrud get healthy and get back in the lineup.

  3. the drop off from zach and cole to the guys that played today is night and day...bubba will get this fixed but it will take time....

but really a bomb to the end zone on fourth down??? really?

You can't judge a play-call on its result. Rudolph likely expected Idaho State to playing the chains, just as you apparently were thinking. If Santiago was able to run wide open and catch that for the win, I'm pretty sure no one would be critical of the call.

  4. Where they figured out our defense and started going through it like crap through a goose we couldn't do anything against their D when we needed to.

Not having Studsrud hurt at the end of the game. Some confusion towards the end in terms of the play being run. Also, not having Studsrud's athleticism hurt the offense.

  5. Just got back from the game and wow - we want to build a game experience - a beautiful day for tailgating - a nice homecoming crowd with a good student section, and a very beatable opponent.  The place is loud early and the students are really into it.  Then don't show up for the 4th quarter and pee one down our leg.  I'm gonna say it - we were outcoached today during the game.

Too many turnovers to start the game. The muffed punt by Seibel, interception by Studsrud, and the fumble by Santiago were all bad plays that ultimately cost UND in the end. Also, the pass defense just isn't good enough to defend for 3+ seconds without Reyes and Arnell; the defense couldn't get to ISU's QB all day, which was disappointing.

Huge missed opportunity today, and I blame the loss on the early turnovers and poor defensive play down the stretch. When UND was up 31-15 in the 3rd quarter, the game should've been over for a UND victory.

  6. I don't know what the national ranking is but the O is ranked last in the conference in total offense.

If we embrace the #1 ranking of the defense, we can't ignore the last place offense.

That's why I like this matchup with ISU.  Their D is ranked near the bottom of the conference.

UND is not the worst offense in the league, if that's what you're implying via certain statistics. The worst offense in the league would not allow the team to be leading the conference in total wins. UND doesn't need to put up huge yards and points when they have the lead and a top ranked defense. If you look at offensive turnovers and rushing yards per game, which is actually complementary towards the defense, UND is one of the better teams in the Big Sky Conference.

Stats can lie if you're not interpreting them correctly.

  7. A letdown is bound to happen at some point.  Injuries become more apparent late in the game.

    ISU 27

    Sioux 24

They better be able to score more than 24. Idaho State's defense is HORRIBLE. I don't buy all the unfounded negativity from the pundits and naysayers; when you rush for 200+ yards two games in a row, your offense is not "bad". UND should/better be able to move up and down the field on these guys.

  8. Time for a statement win. There has been nothing but close wins thus far, and although a win is a win, a big homecoming win by 14 to 21 points would be great. Idaho State is 1-4 and has lost handily on the road to teams like UNLV and Cal Poly. Heck, even Portland State - who UND just defeated - went into Pocatello and beat up on Idaho State, winning by 20 points.

This is a must win. UND must first secure the W, but if they get the chance, they also need to make a statement and win convincingly. Run the ball for 300+ yards on these guys, control the time of possession, and come away with touchdowns, not field goals. UND's defense needs to just hang in there and force some turnovers (no big plays like last week's first play); make the Idaho State offense nickel and dime it - they will eventually make a mistake. That mindset requires solid safety play though......

  9. Agree.  If you pull a kids redshirt he needs to be good enough to help you. Olivera has shown promise. Smith's speed could be helpful at wideout and multiple sets to get him into space to utilize his speed. We need to play these guys to justify pulling red shirts. Too soon to tell.  They both have shown promise and could help this year if they continue to develop.

Need more wrinkles in this offense. Can't argue against Santiago at RB considering what he's done, but I still think splitting Santiago out wide and having him take some jet sweeps and bubble screens is not a bad idea. Same for Iwarri Smith; jet sweeps are great but give him a chance running some routes and in the screen game.

Need a package to get Olivera on the field at the same time as Smith and Santiago. Gives you a power back for the inside game and two speedsters to put out wide for jet sweeps, bubble screens, and maybe just plain go routes.

I will say, I like the combination of Santiago, Smith, and Olivera moving forward. They will only get better as they are true freshmen; let's not forget that.

  10. Those should be our expectations regardless of what the Ag College does or doesn't do.

Not the way it works though.

You can't change the psychological make-up of 18 to 22 year old college students; it is what it is.

College students expect an exciting atmosphere or a winning product apparently; otherwise, they wont participate. NDSU is the football king in the region right now, and until UND starts making a name for itself, it will remain that way.

Fortunately, UND football is finally starting to deliver, so I expect student attendance to rise.

  11. The student section is not technically sold out. It's just blocked off and free tickets are given out at the Union. That section will be blocked off whether all the student tickets get picked up or not.

I believe "Siouxperfan7" was going for a bit of verbal irony there. We all know how wonderful the students have been with their allotted sections....

Hopefully the student attendance is great on Saturday. They make a huge difference with the atmosphere and this up-and-coming football program deserves full attention from the student body.

  12. That is true but it was Mollberg's second season on the field, same as Studsrud has now.   Studsrud only played 4 games last year but Mollberg didn't play full time either so not a full season and a half.  Just saying their numbers are similar for both during their second seasons on the field.  Mollberg would have improved by playing this year also, same as Studsrud.

Again - I wouldn't make a change either but don't short change Mollberg.  He was playing very well when he got hurt - and we couldn't run the ball at that time.

Turnovers. Mollberg had too many last season. Studsrud is protecting the ball better than Mollberg did in 2013 and 2014. There are a few lapses in judgment here and there, but overall Studsrud is better in that department. The numbers/facts/stats support this.

  13. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins the game.

If UND throws for 0 yards but runs for enough scores to have more points than the other team, then that's all that matters.

Lets not overthink this. If UND can run the football when the other team knows they are gonna run it, that just plays right into the physical mindset that Bubba has instilled in this program.

The passing game needs to improve, but scoring and protecting the ball are the two most important offensive qualities - let's not forget that.

  14. UND ranked at #25 in the coaches poll. Portland State ranked #23. I don't understand how you can keep Portland State ranked ahead of UND. Yes, it was a close game in terms of the score, but UND was the better team and should've won by more than they did. UND absolutely controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball against PSU.

  15. Appears to be a "GREEN-OUT" game.

From an obvious perspective: wear kelly green to this game.

From a less obvious, and perhaps speculative, perspective: the team may be wearing all green as well (green helmets, green jerseys, green pants).

  16. Let's all slow our roll a little bit.  The big boys of the league are coming up and we just lost two of our best defensive players for an unknown amount of time.  MSU has finished ahead of us every year and is very dangerous.  We need all hands on deck to stay with them.

Next man up mentality. Most, if not all, of the kids who got banged up against Portland State will not be playing on Saturday vs. Idaho State.

Depth and tough, gritty play will be key on Saturday. UND's running game needs to perform big against the porous run defense of Idaho State.

  17. There seems to be some revisionist history going on here.  Studsrud has done a good job this year but Mollberg was also playing very well last year when he got hurt.  I don't support making a change at this time but the level of Joe's play last year shouldn't be diminished.  In fact Joe's QB rating from last year and Keaton's this year are pretty similar.

Here are the respective QB ratings for 2014 and 2015

    Mollberg - 108.5 rating in 2014

    Studsrud - 58.4 rating in 2014 / 116.3 in 2015

2014 was Mollberg's 3rd season in the program. 2014 was Studsrud's 1st season and this season (2015) is Studsrud's 2nd season. In my opinion, take the 4-1 start and stick with the solid potential of Studsrud.

  18. A few years ago I worked on the marketing team for the athletic department and was actually the guy in the production booth cuing a lot of the timing for videos and music and what not. The setup then, and I can't imagine it has changed much, was far from ideal. I would receive feedback and instructions on things like music volume from the director of marketing who was on field level. I would then relay those to Alerus employees actually controlling the video boards and sound system. I specifically remember an instance where I was told to turn up the music on 3rd downs on defense by the guy on the field, relayed that to the guy running the sound and his boss told him not to turn it up because it was already loud enough. It was constantly a battle with the Alerus staff to try get things where we wanted them and we often were forced to settle for less than what we thought was best for the game day experience. As far as the lights go, I do remember it taking quite a long time to get the lights back up to game time brightness and we squeezed that time into our pre game script with less than 5 seconds of leeway. A lot of the pregame script timing was dictated to us by the Big Sky and we would have to build the video and intros around those times. If the Big Sky cut a minute or even 30 seconds from the time allotted then the lights would not be able to be back up to the required brightness and kickoff would be delayed, tv broadcast would be screwed up, etc. that's my guess as to why the lights no longer go off.

Essentially, UND is butting heads with the Alerus Center staff, and I think most long-term UND football fans have noticed that. Thank you for your insight on this matter.

The most important thing is to win, but you have to wonder what it would be like if UND didn't have to rely on a secondary staff to promote a game day atmosphere. That is, what would it be like if UND had full control at an on-campus facility? The Alerus Center - like the Fargodome for NDSU - should embrace the atmosphere potential; instead, they undermine it. For this reason, renovating Memorial Stadium should still be on the table for the distant future.

  19. Our defense cant be winning all of our games with the offense playing mediocre. Yes we have a great running game but can we rely on it all season? What if we play a good defense and they stop the run? Studs passing straight up scares me. We have been straight up lucky that we have won 3 games since Wyoming. These new injuries also worry me on both sides of the ball. We also should not have won after 4 fumbles that need to stop. Idaho state will be a good test for our backups but the real measuring sticks are still ahead. Gotta love 4-1 but not after playing like we did the last 4 weeks.

Rushing for over 200 yards is not necessarily mediocre. It limits turnovers, increases time of possession, and only makes the defense play better. And yes, I think UND can rely on their running game. Will it take a passing game to complement the running game? Absolutely, but no one should expect UND to start focusing on the passing game anytime soon. Lastly, the wins against Drake, UC Davis, and Portland State were not luck. UND was the better team on offense, defense, and special teams. I would actually argue UND should have won those three games by an even larger margin than they did.

I don't understand how you aren't impressed with a 4-1 start considering last year's squad had no depth and won only 5 games. That train of thought is completely irrational in my opinion.

  20. You do not fix what is not broken (4-1 [2-0]).

Over the last couple games, UND's running game has been superb; Keaton Studsrud has been a big part of that running game.

    Focus on improvement, not change.

Passing game needs to get better. That consists of not only the quarterback, but also the offensive line and the receivers.

  21. is this a tacit prediction of a UND victory over msu ?

Montana State's defense is horrendous. If UND's defense can play against MSU like they did last season in Bozeman, UND will be fine. In fact, because UND is hosting this season's game in the Alerus Center, I would say UND could perhaps play even better defensively against the kitties of Bozeman.
