  1. Honestly my line next week will be less than 1/3 of eligible voters chose Fighting Hawks. 1/6th (considered a majority) chose this for us. So by all means, go on and vote so that  I can at least start accepting that we are a childish enough fan base to elect Hawks by majority, as opposed to an indifferent fan base.

So, the other universities that have "bird" nicknames are childish and/or have immature fan bases?

UND is no more privileged than:

    Air Force Falcons

    Ball State Cardinals

    Boston College Eagles

    Bowling Green Falcons

    Eastern Michigan Eagles

    Florida Atlantic Owls

    Georgia Southern Eagles

    Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks

    Louisville Cardinals

    Miami (OH) Redhawks

    Oregon Ducks

    Rick Owls

    South Carolina Gamecocks

    Southern Miss Golden Eagles

    Temple Owls

Yes, there are a lot of "bird-related" nicknames, but most of the schools have identifiable logos and, most importantly, do just fine with their athletics. UND can do just fine with marketing and promotions as the Fighting Hawks. Furthermore, UND can be successful on the field, ice, and court as the Fighting Hawks.

  2. Let's cut thru the pollyanna BS......NO.....and I mean no Hawks logo they can come up with will be "cool" or "unique".

Put down the pitcher of Kool-Aid.

Well, apparently a rumored hawks logo has promoted the "fighting hawks" nickname enough to where it has majority support; thus, it seems that "cool" hawk logos are possible.

  3. A guy that sits by me at the Ralph showed me that proposed Blackhawks logo, and told me that was going to be our new logo when we became the Fighting Hawks. After a while, I finally made him understand that his information was incorrect. I wonder how many people are voting for that name based on that logo.

Nevertheless, the lesson here is that the new logo carries just as much weight - if not more - as the actual nickname itself. With that in mind, either Roughriders or Fighting Hawks can be "unique" if the subsequent logo is well-made and appealing.

  4. How many of you hockey folks thought "Wild" was the dumbest nickname choice ever...and now have 17 different Minnesota jerseys hanging in your closet because that logo is just so damn cool?

Show of hands, please, by +1's or -1's.

    Exactly.

If the UND Fighting Hawks have a neat new logo that looks "cool", I can see plenty of new UND apparel getting worn real quickly...

  5. Didn't know Nodak supporters were so thin skinned?

They seem to represent the entitled population who want "this or nothing".

I for one have changed by mind according to the beliefs of THE VOTERS. The majority has spoken; thus, I will get on board and move on.

    Go UND!

  6. Anyone else worried PSU doesn't win another game? That would hurt us.

    It's certainly a possibility.

With Portland State and Montana State as UND's two ranked FCS wins, the resume could fade fast as both of those teams looked poor yesterday.

  7. Absolutely, terrible call. If you are rolling on the ground with the football and can flip it up to someone.... You are down in college football. I really think replay may almost be worse for officiating this year as they let the play play out then have an extremely hard time overruling themselves. That said I foresaw something bad happening for the bung gulls after they thought they had it in the bag after the Montana fumble. +1 on being nice to watch other teams on big sky TV.

I do not agree with that.

Yes, the Big Sky officiating is poor, but that doesn't mean replay is the reason.

Last weekend, against Montana State, UND had a crucial call overturned due to replay. Replay is used all over college football, and the way I see it, it is about time that FCS football and the Big Sky Conference implement it.

  8. Northern Arizona now leading #4 Eastern Washington 31-14 in the 4th quarter.

With UNC, SUU, Montana, and likely NAU all winning today, UND's playoff chances were hurt. Each BSC team that UND is competing with in terms of a playoff spot won today....

  9. Wow. Idaho State chokes and Montana wins in OT 33-27.

Idaho State lined up for an OT field goal attempt to win the game but they completely falter under pressure and snap the ball too high, Griz pick it up and then return it for the game winning touchdown!

Both Portland State and Idaho State lost heart-breakers today, and they were the two teams who, with wins, would've helped out UND. Also, SUU beat Montana State in Bozeman.

NAU is also beating Eastern Washington....

Lot of teams starting to pile up records similar to UND, which is not good for UND's playoff chances.

  10. Well, UNC beats #10 Portland State 35 - 32.

Two 5-4 teams will face off next weekend in the Alerus Center.

Northern Colorado and North Dakota are the only two teams to have defeated Portland State this season.

Northern Colorado will come into the Alerus with plenty of confidence. Considering how big the game is for UND, people need to come out and support UND football!

  11. And Portland State is up now.

Northern Colorado looking susceptible to the inside running game....

Excited to see UND's two-headed running attack of Santiago and Olivera against UNC.....

  12. Portland State looking to take the lead at the end against Northern Colorado.

Northern Colorado has played well in Greeley this season, but on the road they have been suspect.

UND certainly shouldn't overlook UNC, but with an extra week to prepare and heal up, I expect UND to win by at least 14 points against UNC.

  13. Plus, if UNC wins out they'll be 7-4 and have an outside chance for the playoffs, although it would be a big longshot, as they don't have a very impressive resume.

They don't have a chance really. They wouldn't have 7 DI wins.

  14. Alex Johnson from East Ridge looks like the prototypical UND tweener OLB/S type that would be really good coming off the edge in 2-3 years.

Looks like a really good pass rusher and is about the size Idowu and Disterhaupt were in high school.

Funny you say that, I was thinking the exact same thing when I read that.

I have a feeling Bubba is thinking the same thing too...

  15. Question for you guys. I have some relatives (by marriage) that are NDSU fans. They claim that the Alerus can't host playoff games cause the ceiling isn't high enough. Has anyone else heard this before? I know it's not correct but you can't argue with children, women and the mentally challenged. Bison fans are in all those categories.

    Completely false.

The ceiling is more than elevated enough.

  16. The fact that the Alerus Center thought it was a better idea to put 2 big Alerus Center logos at midfield on the new turf instead of the interlocking ND logo really shows their their lack of effort to make the Alerus Center to home of UND football.

This still bothers me to this day.

The Alerus Center staff treats their main tenant, UND football, like absolute !@#$.

Its unacceptable. I have gripes about the building itself also (mainly a lack of endzone seating), but the lack of pregrame production (lights need to go off!) and UND signage/posters irritates me more than anything. It all comes down to effort, which is minimal at best. The video boards were a huge plus, though.

  17. IF we were to make it and host a first round game, I wouldn't be surprised if it were the lowest attended game of the year.

Although I do not doubt you, that right there is one of the saddest, most unfortunate statements I've heard in a while.

The first DI football playoff game UND hosts/participates in will be the lowest attended game? Damn

I'm sure hoping that this isn't the case, IF UND wins out, and IF UND makes the playoffs, and IF Faison bids high and IF UND hosts the first-round playoff game......

Long ways to go apparently, but still fun to discuss.

  18. Tootell & Tucker — Monday, November 2
In the first installment for the first week of November, Colter Nuanez joins Ryan Tootell and Tucker Sargent to talk about the Halloween weekend across the Big Sky Conference on the Tootell & Tucker daily talk show on ESPN 102.9 FM Missoula.

    "That's a full-team loss [for Montana State]..."

Perhaps give UND a little credit? C'mon.

The reason Montana State's offense didn't look the greatest is because UND has the best defense in the Big Sky Conference and they made timely stops. Thanks for pointing that out....

  19. Maybe we beat NAU because we were a better team that day.  I doubt the only reason we beat them was because they were not focused.

I don't know if we will have the better athletes in our next two games.  Like I said I can see this team losing them as easily as they win them.  I doubt we lose though because our team is looking ahead to the playoffs.  Its the playoffs from here on out for this team.

    Important point to establish:

Ladies and gentlemen, UND's playoffs officially start now.
