  1. What are some realistic numbers for Studsrud. I don't  see him putting up huge passing number, but he will need to be efficient and limit mistakes. Really hoping he has had significant improvement and gain confidence over last season. I understand he was really thrown into the mix last year without being ready, but hopefully we don't see those types of numbers at any point this season.

Really excited for the season to start, and hope to see some surprises from this group; both as a team, and with individual performances.

Major thing is turnovers. If the UND offense can play clean, not necessarily explosive, but at least mistake-free, they will give the team the best chance. Obviously you have to score points, but turnovers will kill the team's chances.

So as far as Studsrud goes, interceptions and fumbles are the only true bad plays.

  2. good points.

I don't think UND will have great success running tthe ball.  Take advantage of UW's youth in their secondary.

    Chuck the pigskin!

The reason Bohl has so many freshman in the seconary Is pretty obvious watching them last year.  Slowest safeties and dbacks I've ever seen in FBS.  They didn't have a pick in at least the first half of the season.   He probably feels it can't get worse.  At least these youngsters have some speed.

There are three things that can happen when you throw the ball, and two of them are bad.

UND needs to be more balanced this season and take advantage of suspect secondaries, perhaps like Wyoming's, but abandoning the running game would be a HUGE mistake. UND can't afford mistakes (interceptions and QB sack-fumbles) with how the defense is; that is, field-position with a tough defense is crucial. Play Bubba ball - run the ball on offense, play the field position game, and play stifling defense that hopefully produces turnovers. The play-action game will have to be sprinkled in there as well for balance.

  3. Remember what Bubba said when he was hired

there will be two people nervous during a game.

the opposing quarterback and his mother

that means we will be playing defense.

Whether Wentz is injured or not, UND's defensive gameplan is going to be pressure, pressure, and more pressure. UND won't win the game unless they force Wentz into mistakes, like interceptions or fumbles. If Wentz happens to be immobile from the ankle injury he sustained on August 29th, then so be it; that plays into what UND was planning to do anyway. Wentz - or whoever is playing QB for the bizons - better be ready to play big boy football on September 19th.

  4. High ankle sprain equals at least a month of not being 100%. Remember, he uses his legs quit a bit.

Severity of this type of injury varies - it will be something to keep an eye on. Weber State game will be a good indicator of where that ankle is at for September 19th.

  5. UNDs first FBS win.  And I can't even watch it.  :(

This Saturday, Wyoming will lack senior experience on the field. They have 13 freshmen slotted to play and they have the second-fewest number of seniors of all FBS programs.

  6. Minors will drink in the college aged years. It's an uncomfortable reality. Some will get caught and learn.

But my compassion drops markedly for a minor who drinks then gets behind the wheel.

The young man did not follow the law, but if he would precisely repeat what he did approximately a year from now, you would not hear a thing about it.

    Just something to think about.

  7. Actually the story said he was cited for "Minor Zero Tolerance" no reference to anything about driving. Hopefully the team sees this as a warning that everything is a distraction - no excuses for anyone. Interesting that the Forum chose to post this story on their website - slow news weekend on the police blotter in the Fargo as their football team was out of town.

Let's get back on focus - our season starts this weekend.

Not sure what story you read, but the young man WAS operating a vehicle.

With that, I agree it's time to move on to the season opener. I'm very excited to "listen" on Saturday and see where this team is at. No reason the game down in Wyoming isn't competitive all 4 quarters, giving the boys in green and white a chance to pull it out at the end.

    Go UND!

  8. What did everyone think of the game? I only saw the 4th quarter. How does this year's Montana team differ from last season's?

Montana's offense is wide open. Fast tempo and not afraid to throw it a bunch! Key is playing jump balls and getting pressure; UND did not play jump ball situations well last year so that will be something to watch when the time comes.

Montana's defense is questionable yet. NDSU has a very good offense so it's hard to rate UM's D accurately. I'd say they are vulnerable against the run, however. That's a good thing for UND. (P.S. If UND has the ball and the lead with less than 3 minutes to play, don't unnecessarily pass.)

  9. Last year our defense had 7 total interceptions.

Question will UND double that total this year?

Yes, if UND's defense is going to take the next step from stats to actual wins, it will take turnovers. Even a poor to average offense can score points when given a short field. If UND's defense gets more interceptions this season, they'll get more wins. Simple as that.
