  1. Yes. Unfortunately, this season, UND only scores a TD on 52% of trips. Not good.
  2. 2019: Ketteringham 16 TDs to 10 interceptions. Not quite “intercept king” or whatever but okay then …
  3. 2019 red zone offense was much better than 2021. 2020 (spring 2021) the best, and, as one would expect, best team result wise. 2019: 35 red zone attempts, 33 scores, 25 touchdowns. 71% touchdown conversion. 2020: 25 red zone attempts, 22 scores, 20 touchdowns. 80% touchdown conversion 2021: 46 red zone attempts, 31 scores, 24 touchdowns. 52% touchdown conversion
  4. Bit of hyperbole with “amazing” job in the packet. The scheme is one based on quick passing game, limiting defenses ability to get a sack. Schuster is perhaps not “brick foot” for what it is worth, but he’s not mobile either in my opinion.
  5. 2019: und offense was all about throwing the ball, no running game. There were minimal deep shots, again due to lack of personnel capable of doing that, but Toivonen and Wanzek were great mid-range possession receivers. 2019 avg per pass attempt actually less than in 2021. With 2020 (spring 2021) and 2021, major difference is improved running game with Otis Weah. 2019: 262 passing ypg, avg 6.69 per pass attempt; 121.8 rushing ypg, avg 4.2 per rush attempt. 2021: 242 passing ypg, avg 6.92 per pass attempt, 168.2 rushing ypg, avg 5 per rush attempt
  6. Quincy Patterson can run but obviously couldn’t pass worth a damn. QB position still requires decision making and passing accuracy far before running ability and arm strength, which I suppose is why Schuster gets the nod over Vaughn. With all that said, the best CFB teams often have a QB that can do a little bit of everything - it’s the way contemporary football is played. I think some around UND football and this board still expect the game to be played like it was in the 1990s. Playing a brick foot quarterback won’t get the job done. As for Vaughn, he can move and has a bigger arm than Schuster, that I am certain; but if you can’t pass accurately or make good decisions with the ball, you can’t start.
  7. Very perplexing bias you have there. Vaughn is not slower than Schuster. If Vaughn was somehow less of a running threat, he shouldn’t see the field at all in current setup as a “wildcat” QB. And don’t give me the “he’s a big bodied guy” reason for why he see’s the field, because if that is the only reason why Freund is playing him, then this offense is in worse hands than we thought.
  8. Trey Feeney is a way better athlete than Schuster, that’s obvious, but Vaughn is a better athlete than Schuster also. Purely being a better athlete is not what Freund values in his QBs, obviously. Bubba and Freund value decision-making and leadership above all else, which is not necessary wrong.
  9. Matt Waletzko.
  10. Putting Quincy Vaughn into the game in these situation is Freund’s way of handling short yardage and red zone, but it really isn’t that great of a strategy based on numbers. Plus, in some ways, it tips the defense to what is about to happen. From my perspective, I’d much rather have a multidimensional QB that can do it all, where the defense has to prepare for everything, rather than two quarterbacks that can only do somethings.
  11. First off, NFL to NCAA football is not a direct comparison. Second of all, at that point in his career, #9 had plenty of deficiencies, and those New Orleans teams were nothing too special. Other than that, I do think that is a solid comparison to what UND does.
  12. Schuster definitely can improve, and timely running is an obvious area. Other limitations are largely tangible and hard to improve on, like arm strength and speed. With all that said, Schuster is so-so. He’s certainly not the source of all of UND’s problems but he doesn’t scare opposing defenses either, in my opinion. Perhaps one should poll opposing defensive coordinators to get their actual view, but just by hunch. He was voted all conference in spring 2021, but definitely not getting those honors in fall 2021 (this season) As for back ups, Freund clearly does not think there is one better than Schuster right now, but hopefully Feeney develops into that. I honestly don’t see all three QBs (Schuster, Feeney, Vaughn) splitting time moving forward, so simple clarity with that position group must develop. You need an alpha at that position, and I know some on here rationalize the current situation by just saying Vaughn is the “wildcat QB” and not a true second QB, but I still don’t buy that. Good to great QBs are not routinely taken out in critical situations for the “wildcat QB”, in my opinion, unless there are obvious deficiencies with the starter. Red zone and short yardage is tough for UND given Schuster’s running inability, thus the substitutions to Vaughn in those scenarios.
  13. Offensive coordinator and quarterback are both under the spotlight for good reason when it comes to the offense’s success or lack thereof. UND definitely has room to improve at both areas.
  14. Happy you now understand.
  15. No, of course those things aren’t his fault. But stop splitting, this isn’t just a pass/fail grade. He’s got things to improve on; he’s not playing anywhere near Carson Wentz, Trey Lance, Easton Stick or even Brock Jensen-level. Recent NDSU championship QBs are the barometer.
  16. UND needs to beat SDSU @ Brookings first, that’s a huge task based on how UND has played this season. Possible, not probable.
  17. Failed third down run (slid too early). Then again 3rd down in early 3rd quarter where he could run for first down but instead threw into double coverage and UND punted from 35 yard line as result. Several throws into double coverage, which at least once worked with Boltmann catching it inside the 5, but not the norm. Would NOT say he had a “great” game, but was solid. Did enough for UND to win.
  18. All good points. Team is 0.500, so definitely some good things to brag about, but overall 0.500 should not be the expectation at UND and this squad failed. Bubba, his coaches, and the players need to do better in 2022.
  19. That is fine, Illinois State has a good defense, but UND seems to make all teams they play have a good defense.
  20. You’re f**king ridiculous. Win is a win, definitely not upset about that, but the rationale of some around here never fails to amaze me.
  21. When did NDSU score only 20? Or USD score only 14? and I wouldn’t say those two teams “suck”, as both will be playoffs. UND scores minimally and they do seem to “suck” this year, at least compared to those teams you mentioned. They played USD and NDSU close, but ultimately UND scoring only 13 points and 10 points in those games, respectively, cost UND those games.
  22. Certainly no style points, as per usual, but a win is a win.
  23. Well, if butterfinger makes another appearance then, well… point is, ball security, ball security, ball security
  24. Game is not over yet people. Defense needs to make a play.
