COACHING makes a difference. Who would’ve thought? Completely different program under Troy Taylor who brings FBS experience (Utah OC 17-18) and Big Sky experience (EWU OC 16) to the table. Same facilities at Sac State, also.

You identified several pressing needs that have been discussed on this board countless times. I agree with you. As for calling me delusional; not called for. And your rambling “in Rome” isn’t selling Bubba and his staff, I’m afraid. UND has won 52 percent of its games under Bubba and there is no delusion in that. I have reached out to Bill Chaves (who is repeatedly difficult to communicate with) and the coaching staff. The coaches are great people, just haven’t won many games. Others on this board are undoubtedly connected with UND staff and coaches beyond their “moniker” from a website. This website is just a forum for discussion - nothing inherently wrong with that as you imply. Personally, I have always been very, very critical of UND athletics structure with UND hockey grabbing the vast majority of funding and resources. I don’t think it is a good division I model, at all. I think the Engelstad revenue model is bull$%!#, but when Kennedy attacked it he was run out of town. Chaves kisses ass for it. HPC Phase II is years away from happening according to the projected donor contributions. All in all, UND football funding is not in a great place, like you say. People from this board, however, have funded thousands of dollars to help Bubba and his program over the past few seasons. I would like to think that represents somewhat of a “solution”. As I stated before, the people on this forum - although anonymous- are largely UND supporters who ultimately want UND to succeed at a very high level. Don’t ever lose sight of that. It could be far worse and suppprt could be absent. Again, though, with UND football’s current structure, coaching is really all people have to point to. Unless someone is holding on to a spare $1 million and wants to generously donate it tomorrow, I don’t see anything ground breaking happening for UND football soon. Coaching change is therefore the only real plausible move that could have significant return. I’m not saying Bubba and his staff will be fired; they likely won’t be even if they don’t win another game this season and finish 3-8. But that in itself is somewhat troubling and doubles back to the expectations talk. Should UND give all non-hockey coaches a decade plus pass on mediocrity because of the funding structure with hockey and the delabitated outdated facilities? It is a real question that I think Chaves and other UND folks shy away from at times. For everyone who carries a pitchfork and wants change when things go bad, there is someone like you @Stockdamhockey who looks beyond the personnel and wants inanimate change. Last thing I’ll say is when it comes to managing people, which includes hiring/terminating, some decisions are not morally easy. Terminating a contract affects a lot of people. But it goes beyond that; it is the entire UND community and what they deserve to be representated by. Bubba is a great guy, but in the world of division I athletics, no one is maintained due to personality alone. There are donor relations roles for that. In top sport division I athletics, you are judged and either maintained or let go based on results. And, whether appropriate or not, it is often independent of facilities and support structure. Although, I completely agree the UND hockey first model and Engelstad revenue structure is completely malignant towards UND football, especially in the DI era. It was tolerable and, at times, a non-issue at the DII level. Those times are long gone.

Perhaps you need to tell us more of your thoughts and discuss rather than just attack posters on the site. Discussion and debate does not include individual criticism and backlash; that is simply diversion. Most, if not all, who post here are not “football experts” with pristine credentials. That said, they are passionate enough about UND football to discuss the program and suggest ways to improve. I would much rather it be this way than pure apathy or simply deferment to those with “credentials”. It means there is still pride and a will for excellence amongst UND fans and supporters. When people stop posting about solutions on this site, including coaching alternatives, then I would be significantly more worried.

Don't get angry or bring emotions into this. Let's focus on just facts/statistics. As @bincitysioux stated in a very well done previous post, UND is currently allowing 54% conversion rate on third and long (7 + yards). As @Oxbow6 stated, UND has given up 30+ points over the past 5 road games. You interpret that information as you wish, but let's not pretend someone is being personally criticized here. This is strictly ability or lack of ability to recruit and coach productive defense.

Just like the financial piece can't be ignored, the reality of the results can't be ignored. Bubba has made the playoffs one time in 5 seasons, not twice. He would have made it in 2015 if the team wasn't inconsistent, just like what @siouxfan512 stated. The 2015 home loss to Idaho State (a team that only won 2 games) was awful. It has been a recurring theme under Bubba's leadership. Bubba is NOT able to motivate his team following a big win. They have consistently been susceptible to big letdowns. As for the description of incompetent, it is what is it. Bubba has not shown the skills necessary to win a playoff game for UND (nonetheless consistently get there), and if winning a playoff game is the benchmark for success as head football coach at UND, then Bubba is therefore incompetent.

You are probably correct that Bubba is head coach in 2020 ($384K reasons). Is the decision itself to keep Bubba (independent of finances) correct, though? Based on 2014 to now (winning 52% of games), I would say the correct decision is for UND to part ways with Bubba Schweigert. Does UND expect to win 52% of the games it plays or should UND - given its tradition, fan support, and facilities - expect to win more than 52%? That is a very important question that needs to be answered by UND leadership with influence from donors. With that said, there are still games left on the 2019 schedule. UND has a chance to still make 2019 FCS playoffs.

At this time, my top choice would also be Todd Hoffner. Convincing winning percentage as head coach at Minnesota State-Mankato and he is originally from North Dakota. Furthermore, he writes articles like the one above to subtly criticize UND while attempting to appear neutral in stance; it is pathetic. He deserves to be hated. With that said, the article does highlight some objective points. Namely that UND would have to pay Bubba $383,750 for 2020 and 2021 if he is fired after this season. Chaves would have to circumvent some barriers to make a new hire possible and I don’t know how aggressive Chaves is willing to be. Some on here, who certainly must know him better than me, appear to believe Chaves has big plans for UND football. I sure hope ... Let’s see how 2019 finishes up for UND. There certainly still is a chance for playoffs and happiness amongst UND fans.

IDAHO STATE GAME IN REVIEW (only some first half moments, game was over at halftime) to look at some liabilities. FIrst off, UND kickoff team misses multiple tackles (Ty Shannon and Jordan Canady both, two starting defensive backs) and allows Idaho State to gain momentum early. Then the UND offense commits consecutive procedural penalties culminating in a botched snap and a frustrated offense. Here you see Nate Ketteringham and Auston Gordon discussing the confusion after the play which killed the drive. UND losing 10-7. Here, the UND safety bites on the play fake and comes into the box, while Hayden Blubaugh gets beat inside on the slant and allows the Idaho State receiver to catch the ball and go untouched for a touchdown. Idaho State goes up 17-7. Poor technique by Blubaugh giving up inside leverage and too hard of bite by safety (Hayden Galvin I believe). Need tighter coverage and help over the top. Down 17-7, with momentum gone, UND goes to the inside zone out of the pistol on 3rd and 1. James Johannesson is stuffed on the play. Idaho State NG penetration given up by LG Sean Russo and C Patrick Rooney. Poor inside offensive line play. Here, on 3rd and 4, UND defense loses contain on the Idaho State quarterback. He extends the play and eventually hits receiver along the right sideline for big gain. Idaho State caps off the drive by throwing a deep pass for a TD, going up 24-7. Receiver on the upper left of the screen runs straight down the field, past both Caleb Nelson and Ty Shannon. Inexcusable for two players responsible for the deep half of the field to get beat like that. Awful technique and execution in the defensive secondary for UND. Lastly, in the red zone, Idaho State goes play action and sneaks the TE up the seam into the end zone. UND is in zero coverage man across the board, Hayden Galvin #16 lets the TE slip open in the middle of the field for an easy TD catch. Idaho State goes up 31-7 at halftime. Game over. In summary, the UND defensive secondary played awful. Poor technique and communication back there. Receivers were running free; corners not covering and safeties out of position. Defensive front not getting pressure and allowing the QB to roll out. The UND offense started out great, but collapsed. They could not run the ball against Idaho State and made too many mistakes, including penalties and not getting set up right. Inexcusable and sloppy. Disappointing to see the kick off coverage start out the day poorly too. Now, admittedly I do not know what UND's defensive and offensive calls exactly were or what the specific assignments were for each player on each play, but, as you can see, multiple mistakes were made and it caused UND to be absolutely embarrassed. If you don't like my interpretation/narrative, that is fine. Just thought I would post shots of the game; a picture is worth a thousand words. Rather than typing too much, figured some photos would suffice.
