  1. O.K. The UNA sports information director just emailed me back. This is what he said:

"No, UNA has never been on NCAA probation.

The incidents that are being discussed happened from 1989-91 and

    involved the financial aid office.

In 1992 UNA self imposed a three scholarship reduction on the football

program while the financial aid situation was being reviewed. UNA won

all three national championships with three LESS scholarships than the

NCAA limit. The catch is that it wasnt until after the 1995

championship that the NCAA finally ruled that there was no will-ful

violation and that UNA' self-imposed penalties more than covered the

    over-awardings from previous years."

Interesting stuff. Thanks for the work UNAGRAD. The sports info dir. is making it almost sound like a clerical error. I wonder how many "extra scholarships" were actually given during that time.

  2. UND did not know or think Mesa was any good and thats why they lost to them.  When UND first scheduled Mesa they were a cupcake team. (thats why we used to play morehead as well)  Central Washington was the same situation as Mesa.

You're right that we schedule cupcakes to begin with. My point is that the games tend to be scheduled years in advance and like in this case we ended up playing a tough team. Even tough competition has bad years. Take us last year. Who in their right mind would've expected us to struggle so much?

Do I want to see them play tougher competition? Sure. But I think top to bottom the NCC has to be one of the top conferences. We get enough tough games in conference. This team has stepped up in every game, but what if we played two tougher nonconference opponents. We might have lost both and barely made the playoffs. Until DII changes I think we should play one "tough" opponent and then maybe some medium teams with a sure win thrown in there.

  3. What about a football site that is not d2 for the championship? So there isn't a chance of home field for the title.

I like this idea since it is already played at a neutral site. Most of the time anyways. I'm still trying to figure out how Florence gets to host year after year. Nothing special about the place. The grass has to painted green!

Not many UNA fans at the national title game in 2001. I think they've hosted like 15 straight years, but attendance has been dipping for some time. I get the feeling that NCAA is looking to move the NC game especially after all this controversy.

  4. I'm going to toot my own horn. I had been calling people and telling them all week that if we won we would play UNA at HOME.

    A few reasons:

    1. SiouxMeNow mentioned that UNA should have to play on the road. Why should they get to play every game at home and the NC?

    2. Weather. Does the DII championship ever have good weather. The NC$$ wants games to be played in good conditions.

    3. Money/Fan support. Even with our pitily crowds we've been comparable/averaging more fans than UNA.

  5. UND has not scheduled tough opponents outside of the conference in the past 5-10 years or so. I think the schedule is going to start setting the team up to fail in the big games, because they will not face the tough teams in season.

This isn't true. Everyone thought Mesa St. was crap this year and they won their conference. Last year we played a very good Central Washington team and the year before we went to Central Washington. The Crookston games were set up a long time ago. The games weren't necessarily for us. They were to help Crookston. Though getting your ass handed to you isn't helpful. Originally some games were supposed to be in Crookston as well. These games gave the local kids that wanted to go to UND but weren't good enough a chance to at least play UND. I would like to see us play a great DII team year in and year out, but I don't believe your whole nonconference schedule needs to be "great teams." Also, don't forget that games are sometimes scheduled years in advance. It's tough to know who'll be good and who won't.

UND sports has been about promoting the game. The hockey team does it all the time. They played Mankato when they first came up and then Bemidji. They even travel to these teams rinks to show the fans what big time college hockey is like.

Look at what Roy Williams does. He brought Kansas to Grand Forks. He makes sure all his players get to play against their home town / local college at home.

  6. I got to see Hale play in Anaheim on Tuesday night. He didn't make much of an impact, but he did get some good licks in. Unfortunately, as the game was close, Burns shortened up his benches fairly early in the second and Hale made it on the ice sparingly the second half of the game.

The radio broadcast of that game talked about Hale and Martin leaving college early and that they were even paired together for a while. Imagine that, a Sioux and a Gopher on the same blue line.

  7. Hale got an assist on an empty net goal with about 4 minutes left in the game. Then with 3 minutes left Hale rocked a player for the Kings who was lifting a bit off his feet and hit one of the sides of the partitions between benchs. Hale did get his stick up and took a penalty. But, he did give the guy a bloody mouth.

  8. 10 Reasons the DI-AA football playoffs are better than DII's:

    7. In the first round and second rounds, teams might get to play somebody they haven't already played recently (or ever) just like in the old days of DII.

I think it's great that we got the opportunity to play Pitt St. again and now Winona again. This is how rivalries are born. Even playing a team you've faced in the season isn't that bad. It always brings up more questions as to "who will win and how?" instead of "who is this team and are they any good?" Nonconference games are for playing teams you haven't played before.

I don't like the regions, but I'd rather see Pitt. St. than a team I'm unfamiliar with. Unless that team is "great" ala UC Davis in 2001. I do want the "best" schools to have the chance to meet in the semifinals and finals.

While the teams may be new for the Bison next year, I'm sure most schools are familiar with each other since the "power" schools go to the playoffs year after year.

BTW, I hope the Bison didn't choose to go DIAA just because they are mad at the playoffs in DII. So what, you got jipped once or twice. If every team made the playoffs, someone would still have a beef.

  9. Ever since the debacle against BC in the 1999 NCAA's the Sioux have been getting bigger and bigger each year. BC's defense stood the Sioux forwards up at the blue line the entire game as they kept trying to skate the puck into the BC zone instead of shooting it in and mucking it up in the corners... they didn't have the size to do it. You need to have a good combination of size and speed. The Sioux were able to get away with being small and fast in 1997 as Blake, D. Hoogsteen, and Jay Panzer showed the rest of the college hockey world what uncontained speed can do to you. The Sioux were pretty successful with their small fast team in 1998 & 1999 as well. But BC executed a great game plan to neutralize the Sioux's speed. After that I think Dean said to himself "never again".

I was just saying that we won a title with a small team. I don't think we should go small, but we need speed. We've all seen the damage speed does. As for that BC game, if I remember correctly didn't BC "hug" us the whole game? If the rules were enforced by the refs, small teams could play and win in hockey. But the refs don't enforce the written rules, therefore, we have to have size.

  10. Were going to be loaded at Defense and the Sioux Defense are going to be huge. Maybe some will get red shirted or asked to play Jr one more year. Remember people leave, or can't adapt to the college game or sitting in the stands and may move on.

Well with bringing in more than are leaving (as of now), some guys are going to have to leave. I don't know the rules on redshirting in hockey, but I don't believe Dean has ever done it. I think they'd rather have you play USHL, but that is for younger guys.

  11. It is truly a shame and really scary that this has happened. I'm praying for her.

Hopefully someone saw something in that parking lot.

I guess you can't use that Amber Alert thing either because she is too old. Every day when I drive home from work that Amber thing is flashing another kidnapping out here in Cali. Amazingly enough they catch most of the kidnappers out here. It's normally parents.

  12. so this week the game will NOT be on TV....WDAZ didn't didn't bid and KVLY did - BUT UND sports nixed any tv coverage because of the backlash from last weeks turnout.  I know it's a holiday but do ANYTHING you can to turn out this week.  What would be a better gift T-Day gift than to take your family and friends to this weeks game to SCREAM your heads off!!  (like the turkey you just ate)  Bottom line - NO TV THIS WEEKEND - show up or shut up!!!  Just an opinion...

:silly: Crap. I won't be able to listen since there won't be a computer where I'm going in Phoenix. I was going to go to a bar with a digital receiver to watch. Guess I just saved money.

I lied. I'll go to the bar anyways.

  13. My favorite players have always been the guys that work the hardest. These tend to be guys that don't score a bunch of goals. They're the ones shadowing, checking, digging out the puck, and just causing havoc. What a delicious treat when these players score. Wish I could have seen Perp's third goal.

  14. Winona also hasn't played against our fans (or many at all) in two years. Even the smaller crowd we had this past weekend made plenty of noise. I think the Al is gaining the moniker of a place a visiting team doesn't want to play at. At least in the playoffs.

There were so many false starts by opposing teams in 2001 that the chain gang might as well have started 5 yards back. How many false starts did Pitt St. have this past weekend?
