Genoway is an excellent defenseman. In four plus years how often have you seen someone take the puck around him, past him, or over him. He is excellent with his stick and he sticks with forwards as they come across the blue line forcing them outside or else poke checks the puck away. I think that is waht he is supposed to do. He doesn't knock them over but he knocks them off of their route and you don't see the opponents get good shots because he either poke checks the puck or ties up their sticks. He gets the job done as a defenseman but his offensive skills are so much better than most defensemen, we overlook the fact that he is an excellent blueliner. I think if you told coaches from around the league or scouts people here think he is a defensive liability they would laugh. Most coaches would take 6 of him in a minute. His smarts, speed. quickness and stick handling skills tht make him so good offensively are also what make him an excellent defenseman.
Yeah most coaches would take six of him, as a forward and not a D. If he is such a good D then why is he only a plus 7 with all his points?

Here we go again...with all the native american slurs you've been hearing in this town. Where are the documented charges identifying racism in this town? And when you dig these up how exactly are these tied to the fighting sioux name?
You seem to have forgotten all the wonderful comments made in the Herald in the comment section (the one you did not have to sign your name to) a few years back. Are you denying that there has never been racial shots at Native Americans in Grand Forks? If you do lift the rock off and see the world.

Frank doesn't decide what Faison's job description is, it is laid out in black and white. What he does get to voice is his opinion, which by the way a majority of alumni and fans agree with.
Donations being high has no direct correlation to the nickname fiasco, it has to do with allegiance and respect for the University. When the PC crowd raises $100,000,000, come back and we'll have the discussion. Don't expect fundraising to remain on an upward trajectory if the administration continues to cross alumni and fans.
If anyone has the "mob" mentality, it is the outsiders that have penetrated the administration building, and bowed to the wishes of the minority, regardless of history, respect, or tradition. Standing up to the academic elite is what takes guts. Thanks to Hak, Frank, and the many others that have taken a stand. I'm guessing if others are called from the sidelines ~ they will respond!
And what is that job description? Don't expect doantions to stay coming in? Gee how long have I been hearing that claim? Standing up to a bunch of people who think they should be in charge is what courage is. Respect now there is a joke. Respect is all the Native American slurs I have been hearing all my life in this town?

I'm using my Negative Rep on you early today. But please don't fret, as I will log back in tomorrow, pick out another one of your verbal banquets, and Negative Rep that as well....
Thank you I can use all that you've got.

The good thing about the SiouxSports Forum is that it is free (in more ways than one) ha!
I feel compelled to throw out some of my observations before show time. Probably just to help the anxiety as a fan during this time before the big show starts.
Does anyone else have some burning thoughts on where the team is or what they are doing or not doing at this point?
I have a few observations that I just cannot hold back from throwing out there. Here is my biggest concern to get this topic fired up..
Genoway-
First of all, I probably should qualify what I am about to say with my overall view of Genoway.
-Genoway is the best skater with the puck on the team (Kristo would be second) and probably the best in the WCHA as well.
-Genoway is a master at advancing the puck out of the Sioux zone and through neutral ice as well.
-Genoway runs the point on the power play like a pro.
-It's my opinion that Genoway is one of the classiest Sioux hockey players probably ever.
-Genoway seems to be a great leader as well, although I am not one to judge that as I have no clue what happens off the game time ice.
Now having said all of that I feel compelled to make a very strong point about how Genoway is being used down the stretch.
Basically he is being used in two situations that he should not be IMO.
Here they are:
1. Genoway should not be on the ICE when the Pony Express line is on the Ice in a Five-on-five
situation. Here is why: As I stated above, Genoway is a master at moving the puck up
the ice. He likes to make his opponents
look silly with any type of trap or fore-check they employ.
So here is the problem, one of Frattin's biggest scoring
plays is when he takes the puck from the Sioux zone and skates hard through the
neutral zone and usually breaks past the defender of defenders (many times two)
and gets behind them for the shot. We
all know what I am talking about; we have seen it many times this year and
last.
So my point is that when Genoway is on the ice he tends to
be the one that breaks up the ice, even if it is just out of the Sioux Zone it
is screwing with Frattin's game. It takes away Fratten's break-a -ways and it
allows the defense to get up ice and get set before Fratten even touches the
puck- NOT GOOD!
2. The one 'weak' part in Genoway's game is defense in the Sioux Zone when the opponent has possession. (Denver plays on this weakness BTW). Once again, I love Genoway, and I see him try to overcome this weakness and I appreciate that, BUT if he is the great man I
think he is, he needs (and the Coaches need) to be honest with themselves about
this. Embracing ones weakness leads to self actualization and becoming a more powerful
person right?
So here are the solutions I suggest for Genoway's role:
1. Not on ice when Frattins line is on the ice
(five-on-five). Put Big Mac out with them. Big Mac is very good at the smart pass to Frattin or Trupp on the outlet. Let Genoway work his magic getting the puck
out of the zone when Gregs line is on the ice, and better yet when our checking
line (Lammy's line) is on the ice. Genoway will take the puck out of the zone after our guys break-up the opponent's
possession.
(Did anyone notice how Denver was maintaining possession in
their zone when the Poney Express line was on the ice?) That was not good; we
needed to have our big physical guys on the ice with that line, not puck moving
defensemen.
2. Don't play Genoway on the penalty kill. He just is not adding anything there, I hate
to say it but he is a liability on the penalty kill.
That's how I see it...
I posted last week that Genoway was a defensive liabilty (tying goal Saturday night ring a bell he got caught again with his breezers down) and my post got taken down. Genoway is a plus 7 so with all his points he still has a plus 7? Means he has been on the ice when a lot of goals have been scored against UND. Simply take him off the blue line, since he does not play there too start with, and make him a forward and leave Marto on the blue line if they want to beat Denver. Genoway will be on the ice when Denver scores the winning goal. Will this be the next one taken down?

I got shafted.
I was robbed of the Troll award. I asked this question in all seriousness and it gets made into a joke. Is this because all of you great hardcore fans don't know the answer?
-
Perfectly said in the article...I think this letter sums up the thoughts of all or most of UND alum. I spend thousands of dollars each year following the UND hockey team. In fact am headed to Green Bay this weekend and went to the final five last weekend. Oh and if the Sioux are fortunate enough to make it back to St Paul I will be there as well. Bottom line I do not think this administration understands the passion Sioux fans have.
How much have you given the university though over the years?

I was wondering since when does Burggraf get to decide what Faison's job discription is? I love the part where he says it will cost UND donations. I think I just pointed out a couple of weeks ago how much DONATIONS HAVE GONE UP! This leader could easily be determined to be an extortion letter by threatening to cause economic harm if the writer does not get his way. Does he think he is an associate of Chicago Outfit like the great benefactor? Faison is a man with large cajones since he knew what he was getting into and still did it. How many of you would have had the cajones to do what he has done, namely his job.

There were different types; some were flakey like pastry and some were from a raised (yeast) dough. Different families made them in different ways. I went to a Catholic all girls HS in the neighborhood and all the nuns except two were Polish. We made them in Home Ec class and we made them with a yeast risen dough which was sweet. I never made them out of the class-room.
Thanks.

What are the personal awards given out for hockey?

I grew up in a Polish neighborhood in Chicago. There is a Polish pastry similar to kolache. I remember it sounded the same but was spelled differently (kolazki?). Very, very, tasty especially when they were still warm.
Were they made from a sweet dough?
-
I made no such comment or statement.
I commented on your singling out of Metis as "different" and wonder why you would. Don't you love diversity?
Because you people want the "Sioux" to vote and that would exclude the Metis.

Another idea for a GF restaurant is one that serves tapas, if there isn't one already. One that we enjoy is Global Grill.
This place looks good.
-
Yup....me too. My Grandma only made two kinds.....Apple and Prune. Needless to say, apple is my favorite.
We called the prune ones prune diapers since that is what they looked like.

Implied in your statement is an undercurrent of "Who is more Indian than whom?"
And that question just reeks of ...
I am not the one who has been saying that the Lakota, Nakota, or Dakota should be allowed to vote that is you that has. So under your scenario then Metis should not have voted.

A judge that used common sense in america?
What is crazier is that it is a judge in Clark County who are notorius for their stupidity and covering up for campaign donations. OK he is a federal judge but still is in Clark County.
http://righthavenvictims.blogspot.com/2011/03/seventh-counterclaim-filed-against.html This website gives a complete run down of what has been happening for the last year with Righthaven and the Las Vegas Review Journal. They even sued Sharron Mangle oops I mean Sharron Angle the whack job who is batcrap crazy.
-
Exactly... kind of like when Spirit Lake voted for what's best for them -- keeping the Fighting Sioux name. Errr, what a minute....
Maybe the vote should have only allowed full blooded Lakota, Nakota, or Dakota to vote and not the Metis.

When a majority group tells a minority group that using them as a mascot is honoring them and if they have to quite using them as a mascot history will forget them? "We're doing this for your own good so history does not forget you". Reminds me of a parent telling a child that spanking them will hurt them more than the child.

Real Tex/Mex doesn't work well in ND because people tend to like things more on the bland side... like Paradiso.
I have been gone from the area for a long time, but I think Kolaches would do well in GF.
Those things don't even look like a kolache. Grandma use to make the best Kolches but then she was an old Bohemian.

Ate at an In and Out Burger in Reno, NV last week and it was amazing. Everything was fresh. Again, it's a chain, but it was great
Fat Burgers are better than In-N-Out.

From everything I've witnessed, North Dakota is not a culinary hotspot by any means.
Start here:
-Authentic Mexican (Paradiso or that other place on Washtington...yuck!). Authentic Mexican food, made by Mexicans, is the bomb
-A good burger place. Do not tell me that there is one in Grand Forks, because that means you've never had a GOOD burger.
-Broasted Chicken. Italian Moon does have Broasted Chicken, but I think I'm probably the only person that ever had it there (and it wasn't too shabby). The only other person in GF I ever met who had broasted chicken was from Nebraska.
-A good Italian/Pasta place. Sure, there are restaurants that deal with Pasta, and I know Guiseppe's (sp?) is a higher-priced authentic Italian place, but I'm talking a decent mid-level price point Italian...like a Johnny Carino's.
Mike's Pizza use to have good broasted chicken.
-
Firebones - specialize in smoked and barbecued meats. I believe it is a regional chain. Ate at one in Rock Hill, SC.
People if they have a website please add the link.

We have one 5 minutes from our house and never go there.
We do have a couple of places in Pensacola we love. One is the Fish House, which I'm sure would be a difficult proposition, since Grand Forks isn't really near a lot of fresh seafood and the other is the Angus Steakhouse. Not chains, but great food and service.
These both look like good places to eat (thanks for the links).

Ooo, Waffle House.
Waffle House does great breakfasts and cheap also.
