  1. Watched Warroad beat Thief River Falls 4-1 at the little Ralph tonight. It was a great experience, haven't been to a high school hockey game since the early 90's. The atmosphere was awsome, both schools were well represented with loud cheering fans and each schools band took turns from opposite corners of the arena energizing their fans. It obviously makes a big difference having the band and students right down by the ice. :D

Warroad was clearly the better team and should do well representing Section 8 at the state tourny. I was very impressed with the play of Oshie and look forward to seeing him in a Sioux uniform. Noticed in warmups that he has a nice hard low slap shot, but unfotunitely didn't get an oppurtuninty to show it off in the game. He had 1 goal and at least 1 maybe 2 assists (both the goal he scored and 1 he assisted on were scored with him planted in front of the goalie). I was impressed with his puck skills, the way the crashed the net, and how strong on his skates he was. He should do well as a star player for UND, he already has experience with having guys hang on him, crosscheck him in the back of the head, trip him and take cheap slashes at him away from the play, all without any calls. :silly:

I'm not possitive but I could have swore I saw Hak and Berry up in the pressbox maybe getting a look at some more possible recruits. :D

  2. It's going to be a fine February weekend in Grand Forks.  With the high school hockey tournament in town, not to mention the hated Badgers from Red China, er, I mean Madison, Wisconsin, The Ralph will be busting at the seams.  Hardly a ticket to be had.  The Sioux will somehow chance one in early on Saturday even less than a minute in, and the building will explode.  Even the men and women who are there to be seen, not to see.  Well, I guess that might be asking a bit much.  Besides, they won't even be in their seats by then.

From there on in,  the Sioux will play, by and large, large stretches of hard, crisp hockey.  Parise will probably play Friday afternoon, and barely hang in there, giving up four or five.  Thankfully, the  here sometimes much maligned Seniors will make sure that the Sioux have at least five or six.  I'll take three lady friends to The  Moon to celebrate.  Maybe  get something to eat to boot.  Spends 'spon how many barley pops I've then in me.

Red River beats Central 3-2 in eight overtimes that evening.

Sunday, Brandt starts the Bus to Columbus, stops 36 or so shots from the Red Menace, and the Sioux win 2-1.

These are my thoughts.  Sioux.    Genoway.  Fylling.  Canady.  Massen.  McMahon.  Making the passes and lighting the lamps.

Jones. Schneider.  Fuher.  Riding the attackers.  Clearing the lanes.  Breaking it out.  Scoring on the slappers even.

And of course, Jake.  Jake Brandt.  Driving the Bus to Columbus.  Brandt is driving the Bus.  All aboard!!

    :silly:

After reading this post, it seems to me you may have a few too many in you already.

Parise won't be playing Friday afternoon (he isn't in high school) :D maybe Saturday though.

Good luck shooting the Moon with your three lady friends though. :D

  3. I still say the biggest joke is the regional set-up.  I've said it before and I'll say it again...

All Minnesota has to do is limp into the tournament, even as a #16 seed.  Is there any question that even a top notch opponent as a #1 seed faces a tough battle against the Gophers at Mariucci?  What the he** is the NCAA thinking?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I won't be complaining next year when hopefully all UND has to do is limp into the tournament as a #16 seed and have home ice advantage. ;)???

  4. If Wisconsin sweeps UND and UMD will they be WCHA champions? Or will CC take it with a sweep at Denver?

???  ;)  I need to go with CC

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

No you got it all wrong, Minnesota already won the league back in November. :)

CC has 38 points with a possible 4 more with two games left with Denver.

UW has 33 points with a possible 8 more with four games left with UND & UMD.

With the five point lead if CC sweeps Denver they would be outright champs no matter what happens to Wisconsin.

Denver has the better chance with 36 points and two games in hand. Two in Mankato and a home and home with CC.

  5. Wow.  Guess who didn't have a good game on Saturday?  Here are the numbers of the Sioux players on the ice for the UAA goals, all even strength (but the last was an empty-netter):

    6, 8  10, 14, 29

    6, 8  10, 14, 29

    6, 8  10, 14, 29

    28, 8 10, 14, 29

    8            14, 29, 11, 15, 18

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

This looks like a sign from the hockey Gods.....

I'm playing the lottery this weekend. ???

  6. i know some fans here do not like i style but there is a reason he is 4th all time in sioux history in win % around .700... 2nd all time in goal against average at 2.50...3rd all time in save % at .901 and tied for 5th all time in shutouts with 4...i guess i would put jake in the pretty good category like you put phil and jordan in..

like i stated earlier in this thread he may not be the answer but why not find out!!

    Backchecking forwards??? ???

  7. All is well, stay the course.

My prediction for the next Sioux hockey coach has changed.  I no longer think that it will be Dean Blais.  I don't know how I could be so blind and ignorant and I would like to apologize to the entire message board.

The next Sioux hockey coach will be whoever ends up marrying Katie O'Keefe.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

    ???

Ryan Hale will be Coach?? ;)

  8. Don't know if it is a league thing or not. If it is DU should be getting in trouble. On UMD's fifth goal tonight it looked like Peluso tipped it in with a high stick. Mason reviewed the goal and let it stand. The anouncers said the crowd started to boo when they got another look on the big screen. If they show replays of questionable calls in Denver they should show them at the Ralph. :silly:

  9. Even though many of these players are well rounded, and very talented athletes, it would be hihgly unlikely for a hockey player at UND to play another sport. Many of the players that come to UND have aspirations of playing pro hockey, and train for hockey year round. Also, the hockey coaches do not want a highly regarded player taking a chance of getting injured playing a game of softball or something (this sounds familiar ?)...There may have been some hockey players who played another sport back about 30 or 40 years, but I would not bet on finding one in modern UND hockey history.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

If I remember correctly Brad Defaw was going to join the football team as a kicker but Blais didn't let him due to injury concerns. Not to mention the overlapping of seasons.

  10. Counting purposes my butt!  Have you seen the "1:6 Wins Free Coke!" promo that's been out for a month or so now?  If I were behind the counter at a sports arena anywhere, I'd be drinking free pop for a year with the winners I collected.  ;)

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Just thought the Management at the Ralph figured out a new way to make more money. They just trade the winning cap in to coke for more product and they more then double their profit. ;)

I was wrong though. :0 I bought a pop at the last game and asked if the cap was a winner. It was, the concession lady gave it to me and told me to just keep it in my pocket. ???

  11. I have another question.. what is up with the afternoon games at the ralph next weekend?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Thanks for bringing that up. I didn't even look at the times of the games, just assumed they were Friday and Saturday nights. :0

  12. You know, given the ludricous posts that come out of the two, messages that often appear to drug induced, I am left wondering if the two handles belong to the same person.  Does anyone actually know either of these individuals?  Maybe it is just some lousy Rodent fan toying with us  :0 .

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Sounds like all three of them, Sal, Billy and Poncho, are one in the same.

  13. Spearing is a really bad penalty to take, and I haven't seen it called all that much. Kilpatrick from CC got a spearing penalty last weekend (Zelkin was the ref, and he calls everything kind of penalty in the books.) But I don't think refs call spearing, or give game DQs or misconducts without really giving a reason. I think whatever Rory did deserved the penalty. If someone who actually saw the game can refute this for me, by all means, do. My opinion is just based on the gravity of the call and the infrequency with which these calls are made. It's not obstruction or interference, which happens all the time and isn't always called (or is called too often). You can always argue those types of penalties.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I was staring right at Rory when he speared the Beaver player. Not sure who he was but Rory was definitely bothered by him. I can't exactly remember what he did to Rory but the spear was in retaliation. It was obvious and it helped that the Beaver player sold it well by dropping to the ice as soon as it happened. They had him on the big screen right after the whistle, he got up and went to the bench with a big grin on his face (he did a good job selling the penalty and he knew it). Don't think Campion had a choice but to call the penalty. He couldn't call it a rough, slash, or anything like that, it was an obvious spear.

  14. Unrelated to hockey but a member of this site and a friend of mine for 35 years passed away early this morning following complications from his hip surgery.  Just thought I'd let you know that he loved hockey, he loved being an alum of the University of North Dakota, and loved talking with all you about hockey.  Again Larry Poolman, a.k.a Poncho died at 76 in his hospital bed in Ann Arbor around 3 a.m. That's all just thought this was the best spot to post it.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Please pass my condolences on to Betsy, June and any one else close to Poncho.

BTW: What hospital preformed his surgery?

  15. FWIW, KRACH predicts UND has a 78.3% chance of winning each game.  That would leave Bemidji with a 4.7% chance of a sweep.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

MN should have won that matchup 87% of the time, leaving Tech about a 1.7% chance of sweeping any given two games.  That's why I was sure to disclaim precisely what these probabilities do and don't mean.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Great, So what you're saying is BSU is almost 3 times more likely to sweep the Sioux than Tech sweeping Goldy.

    :0

I think it will be close but the Sioux should sweep.
