  1. There is no "minnesota rule" for this tourney. 3:00 3rd place. 7:00 championship. Teams don't matter.

    Except on Friday.

You are correct mafiaman. The Mavs take on the gophers in the night game. I, personally, am cheering for a all-WCHA matchup on Saturday night, attendance be damned.

I'd like to see that as well - along with a UMD whoopin' of Minnesota in the 7:00pm 3rd place game on Saturday

Why would you want to see that?

  2. If they bring the Maroon Loon were in trouble

He was the best. Miss the guy.

Biddco--Lots of places will bus you to/fro the game.  Also included are BWW, El Rocco, Southgate, Knights of Columbus, and Rumor (I think?).  Best way to travel for games at REA.  I think this series will be a split but if the Sioux are as good as rated (#2), they need to dig deep and play two real solid games and sweep a real good team at home (I don

    't think that's happened yet?).

Good to know. thanks. Sounds like we will do that one night.

Yup no doubt he should be, also sounds like last year they played rather chippy/dirty and it didnt sit well with alot of the guys....

I don't recall this happening, but I could have easily forgotten something like that.

Just something to add to this thread, many of the players I know do not like Duluth at all, in fact a few of them went as far as to say they were right up there with the Goofers on the hate list...

Didn't know this. Excellent to hear though. Shall make the game more fun.

  3. I honestly believe Duluth is the best team in the west this year.

UMD very well could be. They've played so well in November and December. I will be stunned if UMD gets swept, they're just a good road team. Thinking it will most likely be a split but UMD took care of business in St. Cloud (for the first time in 15 years) and perhaps they'll do the same (they last swept in Grand Forks in the 90's sometime I think).

I'm assuming that because UND didn't have their usual slow start in the first half that they will do the opposite and have a bad second half. ;)

  4. Enjoy biddco!

Haven't seen UMD play what's the style and names of top end guys/top freshman ect..thanks!

Style of play is pretty usual for UMD, one or two NHL potential defensive players with smaller yet speedy guys on offense. Scoring is more balanced than teams of previous years. UMD's played the number schedule in the country and have won thanks to great leadership from second year captain, Adam Krause. As for top freshmen, Karson Kuhlman is a speedy forward who is fun to watch.  Coming into this year they needed some much better goaltending if they wanted to compete and boy have they gotten that. Kasimir Kaskisuo (Just call him Kas) has played extremely well.

Dominic Toninato is our best offensive player who leads the team in points and, in my opinion, is the best pro prospect on the team. It shall be a fun fun series!

I haven't been to Grand Forks for a UMD series since 2007 and saw MTU play UND in 2010.

  5. Half the conference is a pretty good batting average.  The B1G will get two at the most (probably just Minnesota).

That is a very good batting average. It's nice to see the NCHC's non-conference record is much better this year than last year. Really has quieted the critics. As for the BI6 conference, given their record so far I bet they'll have one or two teams in the tournament.

  6. With the NCHC results in non conference it is only a matter of time before all NCHC schools start moving up.  Where as last years the non conference killed us, this year the non conference will likely get 5 or 6 teams into the national tournament.

I'd be shocked to see that many. Four is probably what it will be.

  7. I agree with the picks so far and I'll add Wisconsin's home white. Just a classic. If it was unveiled today we'd call it boring and unimaginative.

I agree with your UMD jersey comments. Love that they added some maroon to the shoulders (really looks better), the striping is better and the UMD logo with the bridge is one of the best designs UMD has had. I love it. I bought that jersey basically for the shoulder patches.

  8. In all the projected polls, I'm surprised Duluth isn't getting more love.  Sure they had a rocky start, but sweeping SCSU and UMN on back to back weekends should put them close to Top 5 in my opinion.  BU, ND, Tech, MN, UMass Lowell, Duluth, Miami?

MafiaMan - I feel like for Jamie Russell's sake, we should note that in one of those last years, Tech was absolutely annihilated by injuries.  There's only so much any coach can do with that.  Obviously Russell's record as a whole is poor, but I felt pretty bad for him that year (I'm trying to remember the specific year, but can't).

meh. Polls don't matter. Just keep winning.

Russell had a TON of injuries. It was insane how many people were hurt. But he was unable to develop his players and the program and fans treaded into dangerous water. The atmosphere was so bad back a few years ago that my UMD friends who went to a game there, felt bad cheering. It was that dead. A change was needed because the players had quit on him.

  9. That was actually pretty subdued compared to the end of last nite's game at Mariucci!

I don't know it seemed pretty jacked up to me. Really fun game, rink was packed (btw it was a record crowd that surpassed the Saturday UND game from last season) and it was LOUD! I couldn't hear the band play when we scored. It was a huge sweep for this team. With our improved goaltending and depth this is going to be a fun season.

Can't wait until we visit UND in January. Will be my first UMD trip there in a long time. And it's shaping up to be a great series.

  10. I've often wanted to check this tournament out but have never had the chance to. This year's tournament consists of Michigan Tech/Michigan and Ferris State/Michigan State.

Has anyone on the board ever been to Joe Louis Arena and seen the GLI? Excluding conference tournaments (specifically, the WCHA Final Five), I think it's right up there with the Beanpot in terms of great college hockey events. Been a long time since UND was a participant, too. Would be nice to get on the invite list again.

I've been multiple times. I'm a college hockey junkie and I enjoy going every time but the event is not what it once was. I don't think people take it as seriously as they used too. They used to pack that place but now they get it half full. In terms of great college hockey events...it's behind the Beanpot but it's definitely second. JLA is a very basic rink and perhaps you'd want to attend just to say you went to a game there.

it's also fun anytime MSU and Michigan play, it's a big rivalry and it's fun to see it live with both bands there and all their fans.

Yes they will have nothing but Michigan teams for the foreseeable future.

If you're college hockey fan it's worth a trip. I can't wait until the new rink is built and I can see a game there.
