Those were fun times dagies.
Always enjoyed the trips to GF & other towns to watch the Sioux play.
Coldest I've ever been in my life was in GF in February until this year.
I even got to see one Natty & a post away from a second.
Those were rebuilding teams that were never predicted to win it all.
You never know when the right chemistry comes together to get it done.
Hak will get it done. I shake my head when I read some of these responses.
I'm fortunate that I am a Sioux fan & not the fan of the perennial loser that I almost was.
It is definitely much more fun watching a contender every year. Makes the winters much easier to deal with.
^This, you never know if it'll be your year. Which, despite some heartbreak recently, makes excited everytime the tournament comes around and we're in it.

I knew I was going to Tampa the moment those brackets came out, never a doubt. I had the same feeling in 2007 after Wheeler's goal, I knew UND would get us back in the regional.
Now back to the most ridiculous thread in history of message boards.
I know the exact feeling Mariucci! I was celebrating as hard as anyone when we had that amazing comeback in the Five. However, once those brackets came out I just knew MN would have it in for us & I hardly ever think this(I'm a biased Sioux fan, what do you expect). I was at the regional final at the X and was hardly even surprised when we lost, but the silver lining is that team really outperformed what most thought was possible.
Since then, I've learned that no matter how big the game seems unless you're ending the team's season, don't get ahead of yourself

I'm not in the "fire Hak" group, but none of what you write addresses everyone's issue with Hak's teams..... I'll get to work on ordering those participation banners.
You're just trying to start something with the annoyingly redundant "participation banners" crap, it's been played out.
What I believe 'SJHovey' is trying to get to is the 13 wins, not 13 one-and-done tournament appearances. Point being, every game in the tournament is the biggest game of the season up to that point. Hak has come away victorious in these scenarios 13 times, that's not just participating.

Miami has won 1 game in their last 6, and 2 in their last 12. Not quite "surging", though they are more dangerous than hosting Mich Tech or Anchorage.
Got Blake Coleman back though, and he notched 3 against us last time we saw him. You know what I meant, they're not the league doormat that we so often see. Unless they lay down against us like they did Saturday, but I don't see that happening twice.

Haha same thing happened to me too. I defintely paid a premium on that package....and right when we lost the market price of all tickets in the tourney tanked! I couldn't even get rid of my championship tix for $20/ea.
I guess it doesn't always work....however it never failed me at the final 5. I used to always wait until the Goofs lost (or wouldn't make it)....one year (UND vs DU) I picked up awesome tix for $10/ea.
My thinking is that it won't be too hard to find tickets, especially if UMD doesn't make it. SCSU doesn't travel that great. It will only be Sioux fans...easy (knock on wood).
Edit: However I live in the TC so it's a little different for me.
Yup, I live in the cities too and live & work downtown so I actually walked to the Target Center on a break and picked up ticket packages. Got the lowest I could find in the upper deck for $60 for the series and no fees included. I figured I wanted to check the sightlines out before committing to lower bowl for the extra $. Oh, and as much as I hate saying it, we aren't exactly a near guarantee to make this tourney like we did the Final Five. I'm actually pretty nervous about it with Miami and CC surging.
-
It is cheaper....I wait like 3 minutes before puck drop and always get good seats.
I tried that at the Frozen Four in Denver, and the scalpers wouldn't budge a dollar so I said forget it and went across the street to watch the game in a bar(Jackson's I think?).
I think the scalpers assumed that since I was a Sioux fan that I drove 1000 miles for the game. However, I was going to college in Colorado at the time, which is why $ weren't exactly growing on trees for hockey tickets.
In hindsight, it worked out for the best because the game was pretty much over after the 1st period. It was tough to watch but would've been much tougher had I gave in to the greedy scalpers. I knew people that had taken an overnight bus from ND, and I'm sure some of you did as well, to watch the game. I remember feeling really bad for those people.

Ok, I'll bite being my name was mentioned. First of all, Hak took over UND not Wisconsin. The program he took over had been winning National Championships at the rate of about 1 every 5 years for the last two coaches. We were the Boston College of that era. Where the cheese heads have Badger football and the Packers, UND Hockey is the only game in town on the national stage. I think we need to define what our expectations are (and I think they are different than the Badgers). I see a collective lowering of expectations here - being there is good enough, it's somehow harder, ect. My expectations for this program are some National Championships. I am not saying fire Hak, but I am saying that I am getting frustrated with our lack a championship. A better question might be what BC expects after York retires. Will they be happy with being close but no cigar? In my mind, the expectation that the Sioux Hockey team should win some championships is not unreasonable. Dredging up all of the other programs that haven't gotten it done lately (Red) does not make me happier with our lack of success.
Ok, you can argue that expectations have been lowered on siouxsports.com. I don't agree but here's a better question: Why does it matter if a small sample of Sioux fans on a message board's expectations have been lowered?
The real problem I would have is if Hakstol lowered his expectations and started acting like we had a good run and we were happy to get as far as we did. That has never been shown or alluded to by Hakstol or any player that has played under him. They're the guys that are sitting in the locker room at the end of the season and can't take their jerseys off while they break down in tears because they killed themselves for this program.
Who cares if you think 'our' expectations have been lowered? The program still expects to win it all.

I recall reading the University of Wisconsin thread maybe a year or two ago over on USCHO. Keep in mind that Wis has a national championship since we last won in 2000, and that Wis has 6 total, a pretty solid history of hockey compared with all others.
What was funny about that discussion, and how it's relevant to our current discussion, is that they took an almost completely opposite view to how some here (gfhockey, Irish, etc...) view the status of their own program.
In their view Eaves' teams have underachieved. Even though he has the one championship, the large majority of Wisconsin fans engaged in that discussion were extremely unhappy. Under Eaves there were no regular season championships. There were no (until last year) Broadmoor championships. Maybe made the tournament half the time. Some sub-500 seasons. The one championship wasn't enough. In fact, some specifically cited UND as a program where even though we hadn't won since 2000, we were competitive for the league titles each year, we were competitive at the Final 5, we were in the tournament with at least a puncher's chance to win the national championship. That was the kind of program they wanted.
I wonder what gfhockey, Irish and the others would say if we were sitting here, now almost 10 seasons into Hak's tenure, and there were no regular season championships, no Broadmoors, maybe a 50/50 chance of even getting into the national tournament, but there was that one, bright shining moment of a single national championship. My guess is they would be just like the Wisconsin fans, the "grass is always greener" approach.
Well said, we do always have a pretty decent shot and this year is shaping up to be no different.

Anybody have a bowl and a spoon or another word eating apparatus?
Haha
at least you called yourself out on it. But I can't say I saw that game coming for Luke on Friday night, fun to watch though!

Couldn't remember where we were staying... Had to look, Minneapolis Marriott City Center... Looks like there's a inside walk way to the Target Center.
There's an inside walkway aka skyway to damn near everywhere in Minneapolis. Keep in mind though, that they generally close around 8-10 PM depending on the part of the skyway you are going through.

Great weekend of Sioux hockey!! This was my first trip to Duluth, and I plan on making the trip again next year. Great turnout of Sioux fans at Amsoil Arena. Nothing but classy Bulldog fans by me. Only good things to say about them, as well as all the servers in the Duluth area as well. I'll be coming again next season for sure.
Agreed, Bulldog fans were super friendly to me all weekend which makes them really tough to hate.
It probably helped that we put a beatdown on their team. A 12 year old hockey player from Hermantown sitting in front of me said that Duluth is good unless they play North Dakota, then they suck
-
I'd prefer CC...we embarrassed Miami...I don't like seeing a team we humiliated
And Blake Coleman is back, he sort of took it to us in Oxford and looks to be back to full form scoring twice against SCSU on Friday night.

A trophy.
Clever, was referring more to how the NCHC is stacked with top to bottom with dangerous teams but yes I do believe they hand out a trophy as well.
-
Forget this home ice crap. 3 non-shootout wins and we clinch at least a share of the Penrose and the #1 seed.
And what do we win? A meeting with a dangerous Miami or Colorado College, what a treat
Not exactly Michigan Tech or Alaska Anchorage by any means, welcome to the NCHC

]Anyone driven between Minneapolis and Duluth? If so, is it driveable or what kind of speeds are cars moving at?
Bump
Hoping I can make the trip around 2 pm today

Sweep highly unlikely, split will be tough. Should be a great series. Duluth has outshot UND four games in a row, all at the Ralph. Some very good goaltending allowed UND to go 2-1-1 in those games; two went to overtime. Not counting an empty net goal, UMD outscored UND 15-13. Duluth has some really good forwards, many that return next year.
Keep in mind Duluth is 4-5-3 at home, not exactly killin it.

Kozek was a good player. His shot was harder than Frattins but it didn't go in as often. Also his role was a lot different because of the guys in front of him. And it's not like Kozek was a bean pole. There's a reason he was a second round pick. He was good.
I agree, good player for sure but Frattin was on another level. But I don't remember Kozek being near as dominant when it came to the physical aspect of the game. Kozek did have a laser wrister but couldn't score anywhere close to Frattin numbers.

That hit that Oshie had was one of the best live hockey hits I have seen live!! Absolutely destroyed that guy!!!
Agreed, I thought he was dead and I just witnessed the last moments of his life.
-
I have agreed with you a lot lately on here, but this one is wrong. UND has never played the lay down act to draw a penalty, never seen it.
Yup, someone cue up a video of a Sioux player writhing on the ground in pain and getting up for the ensuing 5 min pp. If there is, I'll immediately withdraw my post but I don't ever remember it.
-
He wasn't drafted high enough for that list. He ended up better than Kozek no question. Very similar players too.
Except that Frattin was bigger, stronger, had a better shot, and was the best player in the nation his senior year...yes, very similar

Yes I am very excited about this weekend. I think we have the potential to get a sweep if we play like we know how. Hopefully it will be a green out weekend, however a BIG storm coming. I live about an hour north of Duluth and the snow is already starting. They are staying snow totals between 7-15" by tomorrow night. Winds will begin to pick up tonight out of the NW 15-25mph with gusts as high as 35-40mph. This will cause for near white out conditions at times, and drifting snow. Sioux fans (and UMD) please travel safe! I have a feeling the crowd numbers may be down. Hopefully I am wrong. I would suggest leave early if you can. I went to came in UMD 2 months ago sat night. The place was barely 1/3 full, I even got a call trying to recruit me to coem to a 3 game package. I think their numbers have been way down this year. GO SIOUX! I will try and keep posted with snow conditions up north.
Thanks for the update! I am leaving Mpls around 2 so hope the weather holds out til we make it up and then it can snow/rain Sioux goals all weekend !

can we not have a thread turn into a fire hak or hak should be replaced thread because he hasn't won a natty. there are already several of those.
I second this

Heading to the game Friday night. Any idea where Sioux fans congregate before games?
I always go to Grandma's and I seem to remember a good amount there before the game 2 years ago.
Time to Fire Dave Hakstol....
