  1. The so-called "better team" was not even worthy of being selected to the playoff field. They went into their last regular season game needing a win and laid an egg, yet the committee still found a way to put them in. To their credit, they actually won a couple of games once they got in but the fact remains that based on their regular season performance they did not deserve a playoff berth. Another team that was more deserving got screwed over. I honestly don't remember now who they were, but that is beside the point. The Bison just aren't that good, and they haven't been since 1990. Obviously they aren't terrible, but to suggest that they're better than the team that went on to win the national championship is a reach.

i agree we did not look like a playoff team when we lost to missouri state. but our performance in the playoffs throws that out the window. the kansas win got us into the playoffs. ndsu deserved to get in. i will admit we got A LOT of help with teamslike richmond and a few others losing

  2. It is a little concerning that the Big Sky is currently ranked 6 slots below the Summit, even with Centenary. Once the lose Centenary the gap may widen.

big sky and summit in mens bball are normally on par with each other. most years i would put the big sky slightly ahead of the summit. summit is normally a few spots lower but oakland this season has raised their profile for this season. that being said i do think the summit is getting better and will get better

  3. Even though I freely admit that it makes no difference in the scheme of things, I look at it this way:

Houston Baptist has two rather good wins--Middle Tennessee St. (213) and Texas State (231).

Centenary has one win total, and it was against Western Illinois (337).

So even though I realize strength of schedule plays a big role in the computer rankings, and the Great West teams all have low strengths of schedule, it really seems that common sense suggests that Centenary has far more of a claim to the coveted "worst dI team in America" title than does Houston Baptist. ;)

middle tennessee and texas st arent good wins

  4. UND has a current RPI of 322 (out of 345 teams) and had a final RPI of 339 last year. Sac State is 1-8 (RPI 342), UND's other DI win was over E. Mich (0-8, RPI 340), while they may improve- It is safe to say that UND would be one of the worst teams in the league.

In 2009 Port St beat Mont St in front of 1500 fans in the Big Sky final when the host Weber lost in the semis. If the reg season champ does not make the final the conference tourney is a bust. If UND were to make the Conference tourney play in round as a 3-6 seed and win- how many fans would be able to make it to a conference tourney in Bozeman/Sacramento/Flagstaff/Ogden etc with only 3-5 days notice?

Hansel, please stop throwing around facts

    Huh?

Before NDSU & SDSU joined the Summit (Mid Con), I would be willing to go out on a limb and state that the Big Sky coverage in our area eclipsed the sum total of Gateway and MidCon coverage. When the Bison and Jackrabbits moved to D-I and began playing in the Summit and the MVFC, that all changed. Today, coverage of the Summit and Missouri Valley are relevant to and well covered in the Dakotas. But while NDSU and SDSU have been members of the Summit and MVFC, we are still exposed to the Big Sky in both national and regional sports coverage.

The Missouri Valley Conference is a strong basketball conference and I understand that the Bison are dreaming of one day being invited to the MVC, but the Bison are still playing in the Summit for the foreseeable future. On the other hand, historically the Big Sky is a strong mid major conference and has had a lot of coverage in North Dakota for many years. That is why NDSU and SDSU wanted to be invited to the Big Sky when they moved to D-I in 2004. They have made the most of their conference affiliations and probably elevated and stabilized their conferences by their presence, but admit it, the Big Sky was their first choice too.

As for strength of football conferences, you cannot claim the MVFC is stronger than the BSC. The BSC has had more FCS championship game appearances and FCS Championships than the MVFC in the last decade, two decades and three decades, pick your timeframe.

as of right now overall the MVFC is a stronger conference than the BSC. BSC has the best team (EWU) but top to bottom the MVFC is better.

  6. When UND played Northern Iowa in 2006 I didn't know any other team in the MVC (Gateway). They are well known in Fargo because of who NDSU plays ask Joe Blow in Maine who is well known BSC or the MVC....thats your answer. When you say BSC = Montana. MVC = UNI? SIU? or just Indiana State (Larry Bird).

joe blow from maine would most likely say the MVC because of basketball

  7. You guys gotta give your frosh time to develop and adjust to D1. I see a lot of potential in Huff, Webb, and Anderson. You will see a lot of ups and downs from them thorughout the season. That's how it was for Tveidt, Carlson, and Coleman in their first years. Now look at them. They will get better once they work on their weaknesses and put on some muscle in the offseason. Give them time. If you guys can add a quality big man or two and get a couple role players to surround your frosh, in a couple years you guys could be a formidable mid major. Once you get into the Big Sky Im sure you will see more quality recruits come into the program.

  8. I played a lot of basketball growing up and have watched intently for many years. Bottom line - I think I have a pretty good knowledge of the game. I am pleased that we are no longer running the Princeton offense and I'm glad that we are running more than the last couple of years. However, I am really curious if someone explain how UND's offense is supposed to work.

It appears that it starts about 30 feet from the basket. There are many soft screens at the perimeter with the defender easily able to get through the screen or the defenders can switch quite easily . The ballhandler utilizes the screen and gets a little closer to the basket but he is picked up immediately so he passes to someone who is back 28-30 feet from the basket. The ball movement isn't too bad but it doesn't seem be designed to attack the basket or even set up a good 3 point opportunity. What usually happens is one of the freshmen makes a solo move to the basket (I like their aggressiveness) or someone puts up a 25 footer when the clock is about to expire. Can someone explain to me how this offense is supposed to work?

This question isn't necessarily meant to be negative.

if you care to get an opinion from an outsider, i would say you guys run the most ineffective screens i have ever seen

  9. Are you saying you are equal to Wisconsin? Bison by 30 come on. UND has played much better teams than the Bison this year and kept it within double digits with the exception of a few minutes. Northern Iowa is a much better team than the Bison and the Sioux were down only 1 with 11 minutes to go and lost by 12 I believe. Dont underestimate our young team cause it will make you look foolish in the end. Hate to say Bison should win but I still believe the Sioux will stay close and could pull out the win.

No, hes not saying we're WIsconsin. NDSU very well could win by 30 but they wont. UND will slow it down and grind it out. NDSU should win by about 18-25 points. NDSU has a size advantage at every position and will give UND fits defensively. The Sioux will need to be shooting very well from the outside to even keep it close. Should be a great atmosphere with a sold out 10,000. Good luck. I am actually interested in watching your frosh as they seem to have some talent.

  10. NDSU is a year away from being a good team. Their guard play is not good. Next year with Lindberg coming in from Superior, WI and Hale. a transfer point guard from Minneapolis (Via Texas State), they will be much better even without Tveidt.

I say it won't be more than a ten point game.

the guard play is fine. just need to improve a little defensively on the perimeter

  11. I am looking forward to the bison game. This team has already played in front of much more hostile environments against better teams than what they will face in the dome, and I like the fact the game is in the dome and not the bsa. The vastness of the dome creates a more sterile environment than the bsa, and moving the bison into the dome takes them off their home court-far less comfortability knocking down shots in the dome than bsa. I'm not ready to pick an upset, but the bison loss to a very average green bay team shows me they are as prone to egg laying as anyone else. The Sioux need reminding that Woodside is gone.

very very good points. shooting a basketball in a dome is much different than shooting in a smaller venue. many ncaa teams will tell you this after playing in the ncaa tournament

  12. Does this make you delusional? Or just simple minded since there was 12k at the Fargodome tonight?

The attendance has got to be one of the greatest disappointments in NDSU football history.

i will eat my crow. ndsu did draw the most today on which is traditionally a bad day attendance wise for fcs playoffs. thanksgiving weekend hurts a lot

  13. Don't kid yourself the Bison wore down a team with 28 scholarships today and won in the fourth quarter. Montana State plays with the full 63 so they'll probably win by three plus scores. Today's outcomes just proved how !@#!$ the MVFC was this season. The three MVFC schools basically got set up with three byes and still only managed to advance only two schools. It will be nice watching MSU kick Bison ass next week.

ndsus defense will keep it close vs. montana state. it will be low scoring

  14. If I may, I'll try to get away from all of the NDSU v. RMU talk.............(for the record, I fully expect NDSU to throttle Bob Morris this weekend).

    Here's the FCS playoff bracket.

So, what are everybody's thoughts? We all used talk pretty diligently about the DII playoffs.................let's move on up!

I'm picking William & Mary and Eastern Washington to meet up in Frisco in January.

IMO the lower bracket is all about Delaware and William & Mary, there won't be a close game until the semis. W&M beat the Blue Hens by one at home earlier this season.

Seems like the upper bracket has more parody with Appalachian St, Stephen F. Austin, Eastern Washington, Montana St, and even Villanova. I think if EWU gets a second chance at Montana St., they'll come out on top. EWU has been playing much better football the 2nd half of the season than has MSU. App St. has to be the favorite, out of the upper bracket, the Big Sky fan in me has to root for EWU or MSU if they get there. Also, I'm not positve that App St. would match up well with Stephen F. Austin if they meet up.

As of now (the day before ;) ) I'm picking Eastern Washington to win it all, defeating William & Mary in the title game. I reserve my right to reconsider Saturday night.

william and mary is a solid pick. they have a great defense and nearly knocked off UNC a few weeks ago. i think they win it

  15. We'll agree to disagree...NDSU is in the playoffs mainly due to a game they shouldn't have won: The KU game. Your same record argument takes into accout that it was a given that NDSU would beat KU. It happened but wasn't a 7th win factored into the minds of Bohl and Taylor prior to the start of the season. You can point to the Griz scheduling a D2 game, which is what it is, but if the Griz beat a cupcake FCS team over a D2 team, like this year and still lose to MSU and NDSU still beats KU...the Griz are still out. Pretty obvious! Montana in the final poll was still ranked higher than NDSU so a non-conference win over a patsy FCS team instead of a D2 team doesn't get you past the fact they needed to beat MSU under any scheduling scenerio you want to propose...again pretty obvious. ;)

But we did beat Kansas. GET OVER IT

  16. The Griz beat MSU on the last game of the season and they are in and you are out...period. Scheduling arguments are hindsight for a season that is just over. Do you think the KU game was penciled in as a win before the year started? Not even 99% of Phil Hanson wannabe's from Bisonville would of predicted that. So the schedule is what it is this year for both schools. You won a game that 9 of out 10 times you lose and the Griz piss one down their legs vs. MSU. This year the Griz screwed themselves by not beating MSU in a game they should of probably won. This year NDSU gets a win vs. KU that very few thought would happen. NDSU's win vs. KU got them into the playoffs coupled with the fact that MSU beat the Griz. The two games I'm referencing are not independent in this whole playoff scenerio. Frankly, your scheduling argument doesn't hold water IMO.

neither does yours. none of that happened. i can also comeback and say "what if ndsu beat missouri state?" then it wouldnt have mattered if montana won. but wait, it doesnt matter anyways because THEY LOST
