  1. You do realize the top team(NDSU) in the Summit got ran out of the gum by the number 2 team in the Big Sky (UND). Every time you try to make your arguments you keep looking sillier.

and belmont and uab beat UNC. UNC also beat Michigan St and Louisville. TCU beat Tulsa twice. It's a few here that cant grasp the realm of college basketball

  2. I am going to go with Jay Bilas and J Williams since they know a little more about basketball than most, in their assessment of RPI and the work of the selection committee.....teams and conferences have learned how to game the system. They said the committee was lucky this year in that the teams that were in the tournament was pretty cut and dry but based on what they were hearing the seeds were going to be a little dubious(this was on Sunday morning when they were discussing this) and they were correct....with teams like Louisville and Michigan State having 4 seeds and having teams like NC State and Xavier technically seeded behind NDSU and Harvard certainly do not do anything for the credibility of the selection committee and their leaning on RPI instead of actually using the "eye test" and watching teams play. By the way Bilas is picking the Bison over OU.

As far as Summit vs. Big Sky, I think it is foolish to not think that NDSU, IPFW , and SDSU wouldn't all be competitive in the Big Sky conference and NDSU would have a shot at finishing in the top 2. That said any of these teams could have just as easily finished 8th as the depth of the league is far greater than the Summit. The top 9 Big Sky teams would all easily be top 5 Summit teams.

I think Weber deserved a better slot than they got. Their non conference losses were to tourney teams BYU and UCLA, a regular season conference champ who lost in their conference tourney in Utah Valley and to Colorado State and Utah State. I think they should have been ahead of Western Michigan, Milwaukee, NC Central, American, Wofford, and possibly Eastern Kentucky which would have pushed them to a 14. NDSU probably got a slightly beneficial slot at 12 as I would have had NC State and Xavier ahead of them in the band of 12 seeds and then Tulsa and Manhatten as well so they would have been the first 13 or last 12 so I don't think they are as over seeded as many UND fans want to believe.

the committee had xavier 46th nc state 47th ndsu 48th

  3. NDSU obviously could contend for the title in the Big Sky although I think their lack of depth would hurt them over the course of the season and try as you might you can't hold down the pace every night....at the same time they could just as easily finish 8th. They are certainly not head and shoulders above any of the top 10 in the Big Sky but I wouldn't say any of the 5th through 10th place teams are better than the Bison either.

As far as NCAA tourney and RPI and conference rankings and all that...while I certainly understand them trying to sort teams on a objective basis to the point where they just plug the numbers in and let the computers spit out the results....well these are only as good as the numbers and data that someone chooses to use. At some point I would like the committee to be a little subjective and actually use their eyes to watch some basketball.....I saw FGCU in person a couple times last year as well as seeing NDSU, SDSU, and UND and when SDSU has a higher seed in the NCAA tourney than FGCU it really brought it to light. Anyone with any feel for the game that had watched these teams could have told you FGCU was easily 12-15 points better than the Jacks and the same looks to be shaping up this year as I see Mercer is pegged as a 14 seed while they are projecting NDSU as a 12. How much run is a win over the 13th best team in the ACC worth?

theres no doubt FGCU was better than SDSU last season, but keep in mind they benefited from some pretty favorable matchups. GTown and SDSU werent world beaters and I thought FGCU matched up very well with them. Thats usually what it comes down to. You have a point about the seedings but theres a reason NDSU is being seeded around a 12/13 and Big Sky 16th. Notre Dame finished 13th in the ACC but remember their best player was lost for the season after that game so it is a little skewed. That same team also beat Duke, but it is what it is. Delaware, WMU, and Towson were also decent OOC wins for NDSU. What other team in the Big Sky had wins like that? The Summit is slightly above the Big Sky for good reason. Could it change next season? Of course. The two conferences are usually on par. Last couple of years has slightly favored the Summit. Between the two conferences there's no doubt NDSU is the best team and their overall record and body of work proves that. Sometimes you just have to give credit where credit is due.

  4. As far as the regular season, UND finished 2nd in a larger and better balanced conference. NDSU did win their conference. I would say those two situations sort of balance out. Now that NDSU is in the dance, UND needs to make the dance to hold service with NDSU. They played totally different schedules during the year. But as far as who is the better team, NDSU had a chance to prove that and they got hammered by UND when they played. That pretty much decided that unless they meet again in the tourney. Hopefully we will meet again.

By some of the logic here.... Belmont and UAB are better than North Carolina. Boston College is better than Syracuse

  5. Great win for the Bison, congrats to them! But we have a completely different situation. If you watched UND and SU play head to head, there was no question as to who the better team was, UND lead the entire game, and won by 20. However, Weber State has a great basketball team, and it's quite safe to say that they would be heavy favorites in the Summit League just like they are in the Big Sky. I would love to see UND make it to the tournament, and believe that they have a chance if they play their best basketball, but I also believe that the top end of the Big Sky is better than the top end of the Summit League so UND has a taller task than NDSU did. Just my opinion.

In November. Not now. Und has had a decent season and kudos to them for getting the 2 seed and they have a shot at winning the tournament, but NDSU is the better team. 2nd bolded part I also completely disagree with. Most experts would too

  6. Good to see the Bison wanted him too. I guess their posters can't bad mouth him to much since they were after him too. On second thought, they will probably bad mouth him anyway.

he looks like a solid get for you guys. wish ndsu would have got him as we need bigs next season

  7. Crockett and Bonnet are counted as starters because they played as much and probably are more talented than the starters. And Thorton at LB started about half of the season if you count the playoffs. Schatz? and Hardee also saw plenty of time on the D-line, but I am not counting them as starters. Champion and Colvin could have probably started on most FCS teams at corner this year, just not at NDSU.

thorton didn't start until we lost olson and he didn't even start in all of those as shepperd did too. its like counting ollman back as a starter when we lost heagle. non starters don't count

  8. I am like most other UND Sioux fans I don't care a lick about FU's team. I'm excited about the staff that Bubba is putting together and sending out on the road recruiting. There are plenty of kids who haven't made a decision yet for us to get. Playoffs are over time to shut down this thread - and it wouldn't hurt to shut down a couple of trolls at the same time. .

who were u expecting them to talk about in this thread? und?

  9. If by gutted you mean 7 starters back on both offense and defense then maybe. NDSU will be VERY good next year. Biggest question mark is defensive tackle, and they have 2 freshmen redshirting this year that had FBS offers (in one case from Pitt) that are big and strong and they are very high on. They will be in the playoffs and I would be surprised with anything less than a quarter final appearance.

    where you get your numbers?

    offense:

    Vraa

    Vaadeland

    Johnson

    Colville

    Haeg

    defense:

    Emmanuel

    Littlejohn

    Beck

    Heagle

    Dudzilk

    Smith

We do have some guys coming back as backups that had plenty of playing time. Not much difference between Crockett and Ojuri. Bonett should be fine at FB

  10. Absolutely. That's a tradition at UW. Usually to Nebraska. Why? They pay more. They have more tradition.

You see, that's the way it works in the real world. Nebraska>Wyoming>the University of Agriculture and Applied Science.

But, don't fool yourself. They'll run him out on a rail if he doesn't succeed. FCS sub division championships do not guarantee success at the FBS level.

Two words: Joe Glenn. Yeah, he had subdivision championships also. Now, he's back at the subdivision.

the cincy coach has higher pay than nebraska, florida and florida state. that doesnt make it a better job

  11. You won't really be able to judge NDSU and UND based off of record since they don't play the same schedule and play in a different conference. Head-to-Head is the only realistic way. The only somewhat argument you could have is that it was early in the season and the Bison are playing much better now while UND is just the opposite.

it is tough to gauge but the summit is higher in rpi than the big sky.of course that could change as the season progresses but if ndsu goes 14-2 and und goes 9-7 in conference (or however many games they play in the Big Sky), we can safely say ndsu is the better team. head to head isnt always a good comparison. what if ndsu sweeps sdsu? und beat ndsu but lost to sdsu. see where im going? unc has lost to belmont and uab. while beating michigan state, louisville and kentucky.

  12. 20-45 is the record of the 7 ND wins. Only Bryant and Delaware have winning records. Its not like ND is Duke or Kansas, a good win for NDSU but that's like pumping up the Kansas football team because of the conference they are in.

comparing notre dame bball and KU football is a terrible comparison

  13. Very good win for NDSU, not disagreeing on that at all, definitely a game they were the underdog in. But what makes it a "signature win"? I'm honestly curious on how that is defined. Notre Dame isn't even getting a single vote in either of the top 25 polls (Coach's or AP).

And the year Notre Dame was a 2 seed, they lost the first weekend, not a real proud moment for them.

i would say because of how good they usually are and it was a game we werent supposed to win. if we make the dance it will be a win the committee looks at and could be the difference between a 12/13 seed

  14. They have the occasional head-turning team (2011), but more often than not, they aren't anything special. FB comes first, second and third at Notre Dame, with everything else way behind. If you want to call it a signature win because of Notre Dame's nationally prominent brand, that's fine. But it's not nearly as impressive as beating Wisconsin or Marquette.

well duh. those were top 15 teams

  15. I agree with you on BG, but don't pump up beating Notre Dame in Men's BB as any kind of "signature" win for NDSU. Notre Dame sucks in Men's BB; I don't think they have ever done anything special in that sport. If they beat Notre Dame in Women's BB, that would be a big deal, as the Irish women's team is pretty good. And if they ever beat them in FB, well.......we would never hear the end of that.

Like others on here, I am now not as excited about the Men's BB team as I was. Looks like the same tired old broken record.

have to call you out here. of course its a signature win. theyre a perennial ncaa and top 25 team normally. they havent done anything special in the dance but they were a 2 seed a couple seasons ago. as far as this season making the dance for them remains to be seen but we'll see how they end up

  16. The Bison have you a bit snowed, They went from great teams in the early 80s in d2 to the present great FCS team with little to no success. UND during that period was winning and making the playoffs often in d2, they just did not win as many titles (just 1). UND's transition to FCS through the present is very similar to the Bison's, neither had much success and had poor records during that time. UND still has to prove it can get to a high level over the next few years, but there's no reason to think that can't happen.

you had two 10-1 seasons and 3 fbs wins?

  17. That's exactly the point:

The NCAA FCS Championship means nothing except to fans in places like Fargo, Waterloo, Brookings, Huntsville, Cheney, Grand Forks, Bozeman, Vermillion, Normal, Youngstown, etc.

The NCAA Hockey Championship means nothing except to fans in places like Boston, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Columbus, Ann Arbor, Grand Forks, Lansing, South Bend, University Park, Denver, West Point, Providence, etc.

So, the exposure and media coverage that UND would get from a NCAA FCS National Championship vs a NCAA Hockey National Championship is quite different. The hockey championships are why we've seen very large front page stories in the Boston Globe, New York Times, Minneapolis StarTrib, Denver Post, Columbus Dispatch, Chicago Tribune, Wall Street Journal, Wisconsin State Journal & Detroit Free Press about the University of North Dakota.

It will be great when UND wins a few FCS championships because then we'll get coverage in those smaller markets plus our continuing great coverage in the large markets. :)

    :silly:

fcs quarters through championship are on espn networks along with some regular season games on ESPNU. speaking of larger networks... college hockey frozen four and title are on espn 2/U
