  1. One thing that did get discussed this weekend was the play of Robbie Earl, specifically his lack of sportsmanship.  Apparently he is like this every weekend so why were hockey fans so surprised when he didn't get selected for the US Junior team.  Mind you he would a been a nice fit on the Russian team  :silly:

Speaking of sportsmanship, what's with MacMurchy skating around the ice while the Sioux players are being introduced? He did it both nights this weekend. Not showing any respect for his opponents if you ask me.

  2. Ok, now I'm confused.  I can't find the Gophers-Huskies series except on Fox College Sports Central (whatever that is).

Fox has 3 channels dedicated to college sports. I can get them on my digital cable package. It's pretty nice as they air some college hockey games from the CCHA, in addition to Gophers and Badgers games.

  3. Thanks for adding your comments, mikejm.  I am amazed by some people on the board who thought "Lose Zach, lose Bochenski, that's ok, good teams just re-load."  Sometimes, it's just not that easy.

All those people need to do is watch the replay of the AHL All-Star game to get a very clear reminder of how big of a loss it was losing those two. (Or check out the AHL stats.)

  4. I'm curious as to why we need to group up behind the net every time we take the puck into the zone on a power play.  I mean, is a simple pass from the goalie into open neutral ice a bad thing?  IMO, we're wasting lots of PP time this way.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I've been wondering the same exact thing this season. I bet on average we waste about a third of every power play setting up behind the net. Of course, this wouldn't be as much of an issue if we could just hold the zone better on the power play.

  5. Unrelated to hockey but a member of this site and a friend of mine for 35 years passed away early this morning following complications from his hip surgery.  Just thought I'd let you know that he loved hockey, he loved being an alum of the University of North Dakota, and loved talking with all you about hockey.  Again Larry Poolman, a.k.a Poncho died at 76 in his hospital bed in Ann Arbor around 3 a.m. That's all just thought this was the best spot to post it.

Thanks for the info Sal. If you could please post a link to the obituary, I'm sure everybody on this board would be very interested.

  6. Interesting note from that article regarding the bonus points:

    Bonus Time

We know there is a bonus component to the criteria, the NCAA's tweak to the system which rewards "good" nonconference wins.

Without official word on the size of the bonuses, we take these numbers: .003 for a good road win, .002 for a good neutral win and .001 for a good home win.

    Does anything change? Absolutely.

North Dakota moves all the way up to No. 9 from No. 14, all by its lonesome. That pushes UNH, UML, Cornell and Ohio State down one spot in the seedings.

  7. Hey last year at the Regionals at Colorado College they had NCAA 3rd place banners in the rafters. I thought that was strange.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Don't they hang banners in Mariucci for Final Five titles?

  8. What a strange ritual! A sign should be made.

I remember when Kollar always needed to be the last off the ice after warm ups and at the final five one year St. Cloud I think had a few players waiting him out just to throw him off his rhythm.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I remember the Kollar incident at the Final Five. I think it was the St. Cloud goalie that stood on the ice by the bench waiting for Kollar to leave first. Kollar waited him out for what seemed like about 5 minutes. The Huskie goalie eventually gave up and went to the locker room while the Sioux fans cheered.

  9. Personally, I'm not too worried about this team. We have played, by far, the toughest schedule of anybody in the nation so far, and we have still won more games than we have lost. Also, it's only November. Everybody knew (or should have known) that this team would need some time to gel this season. I'd rather float beneath the radar a bit for the first half of the season and gradually get better, as opposed to other seasons where we've been locked in at #1 or #2 in the nation for the first half, only to fade away when the playoffs approached.

As for tonight's game, this could have very easily been a victory. The power play in the first period had one scoring chance after another. Also, we did a good job of staying out of the penalty box. I thought that was encouraging.

I do have to wonder a bit about Jordan being the #1 guy right now. At this point, I would be in favor of throwing Phil in there a few games in a row and see how he does. Who knows, maybe he's the next Goehring. The season is young. Let's find out.

  10. I was flipping through AM stations yesterday (looking for the Twins game) when I came across a Winnipeg station that was interviewing Lee Goren.  He signed with the Moose and was excited about playing in his hometown.  He said he had been skating at the Ralph (he said in GF, I assume it was at the REA) with some former college teamates.

I may have to make a trip up North to see the Moose this year.  I believe they just built a new rink, Winnipeg is always a good time regardless.

Looks like we'll have some chances to see a few former Sioux players in Winnipeg. They play Binghampton (Bochenski) and Syracuse (Goehring and Panzer) at home this season. Too bad they don't play Albany.
